Each member of our staff of instructors is a highly trained educator. Their excellent instruc- tion and understanding guidance have been instrumental in help- ing us to become educated as well as mature citizens. Wle owe a great deal to these men and women, who have prepared and implemented a fine, well rounded curriculum. The mathematics department, under the direction of Mr. Simon Berman twho is the co-author of a new and very excellent Algebra textl offers a great variety of mathematics courses, ranging from Elementary Algebra and Plane Geometry to Calculus and Pre- Engineering Math. These courses are further supplemented by Honor Classes in many subjects which make available for 'the gifted student, advanced training. With Mr. Edwin Katz as its chairman, the English department has taught us to appreciate the beauty of our language as well as its proper use and history. Courses in Public Speaking, Drama, Crea- tive and Scientific Writing, Radio Script Writing and College Preparation are also offered to honor students interested in 'those fields. The English department has also made its classrooms the medium of self'-expression for the student. The llistory Department has the difficult task of helping us to understand tht- significance of national and international events. both past and present. Excellent courses are offered in American and World History, Economics and Civics. Applications of modern day history and economics, as well as the regular syllabus are intensively studied. This vital department is under the leadership of Doctor Samuel Steinberg. Doctor Alexander Efron's Physics department has been responsi- ble for producing some of America's finest engineers and physi- cists. ln addition to the regular course, the department offers to the aspiring scientist, a group of advanced and laboratory courses as, Applied Physics, Applied Electricity, Radio and Electronic Experimnetation, and Applied Mechanics. It is easily seen that the Physics Department is an integral part of our school. The Chemistry department., ably led by Mr. Douglas Bowden, offers in addition to the general course of Elementary Chemistry, a laboratory class in Qualatative Analysis for students who desire advanced training. This course is recognized by many colleges as a year of elementary college chemistry. The Stuyvesant Biology Department has offered laboratory courses in Zoology and Biology technique. These are advanced courses which provide some background for Pre-Medical work. Of course there are two courses offered in General Biology. This

MOSES LIPELES HARRY MARKS and is the faculty advisor of the SHS, Announcerfi Although he is olticial disciplanarian, his relations with the student body are pleasant and of great benefit to those with whom he comes in contact. One of the most tedious jobs in school administration is the task of program- ing and assigning members of the faculty to their duties every term. This task is handled most capably by Mr. Jacob Wortnian, administrative assistant in charge of organization. The dean of the morning session is Mr. Moses R. Lipeles, whose administrative duties are similar to those of Mr. Hart. He is also well known for his work in the Chemistry and Physics departments, as well as at the posts of G.O. adviser and leader of the A.M. assemblies. Mr. Lipeles has also been respon- sible for maintaining cordial relationships between the faculty and the Parents Association. Mr. Harry Marks has, for many years, been an invaluable member of Stuy- vesant English dept. and administrative staff. As dean of the senior class, he has been instrumental in arranging our scholarship lectures and has given in- estimable help in advising seniors in matters pertaining to college admission. Another very active organ of this body is Doctor Joseph T. Shipley, the eminent drama critic. As senior class adviser and faculty leader of Arista, Stuyvesant's honor society, he has worked unceasingly to maintain the scholastic prowess of our school. As faculty adviser to the '6INDICAT0R his services have been indispensable, and with his excellent judgment and guidance we have endeav- ored to make this issue of the 64INDICATOR a worthy successor to those which have preceded it. We cannot close this record without mention of Mrs. Krasnogor, Mrs. Fink, Mrs. Elmes, Miss Feigenblatt, Mrs. Curtis, Miss Dickson, and the other mem- bers of the office and secretarial staffs. Their unfailing courtesy and willingness to help added much to our happiness at Stuyvesant. All of the aforementioned members of the administrative staff, with able assistance of the general faculty comprise the living, breathing body of intelli- gent, efficient and understanding men and women who with untiring devotion to their tasks have made S.H.S. our well-loved alma mater.

l W ' i l Da. EDWARD COYLE WALTER STOFFRECEN Languages Music department is under the direction of Mr. Robert Tolle who con- stantly revises the elective courses so that the latest developments of every Biological field may be studied. Each of the above departments has played a major part ill help- ing to establish Stuyvesant as one of New Yorkis finest science high schools. Our Language Department, headed by Doctor Edward Coyle, gives the student body a choice of several languages. Among these are German, Latin, and Italian besides French and Spanish. This department, with its fine teachers, offers to the student interested in attending college a fine background in the language of his choice. The Music Department, under the chairmanship of Mr. Walter Stoffregen helps to make the studentis stay at Stuyvesant enter- taining by offering elementary courses dealing with the rudiments of Music. These courses are rather interesting and help to provide the varied background needed by the cultured person. This de- partment also trains our fine orchestra, band, and glee club. The Semi-Annual Concerts of the Orchestra and Glee Club as well as the spirited tunes of the Band are enjoyed by all. The Mechanic Arts Department, of which Mr. Charles jordan is chairman, offers fine basic courses which are designed to help one select an avocation. To those students who intend to go into a vocational trade, electives such as Instrument Making give a fine preparation for their work in life. Mr. Frank Panuska's Mechanical Drawing Department provides excellent courses in such fields as drafting and architectural draw- ing. Stuyvesant High School has a fine reputation as a pre-en- gineering school and the Mechanical Drawing Department has helped to build it. Mr. Joseph Eberly and his excellent Health Education Depart- ment have provided the relaxation needed by all students. The members of the department help to keep us in top physical condi- tion as well as coaching the various teams that have won so many athletic honors for us. The school Library is used by all students. It contains many books which provide excellent supplementary material, which is so necessary in a two session school such as ours. Miss Hilda Engle- hardt and her staff make this work both pleasant and possible. We who have attended Stuyvesant have been well prepared for future life. Because of the work of our faculty, every student, whether he plans to attend college or not, will find that the ex- cellent preparatory work will be a great asset when he enters the world of responsibility.
