T lS WITH a sense of deep apprecia- tion that I thank the Class of June, l952, for dedicating this lndicator to me. We are most fortunate in being citizens of a democracy so great and strong that in times such as these we seek to bring thc benefits of our way of life not only to our citizens, but to all those in the world who seek, as we do, justice and liberty. Our strength, based on the democratic virtues, is of such profound force and truth that it has rejuvenated those peoples who have been battered by totalitarianism and is once more bringing to the world a renaissance of the democratic spirit. We in Stuyvesant have lived through stirring times. We are the heirs of a great democratic tradition, a way of life. But we cannot be merely beneficiaries. Vile must be practitioners, inno- vators, and missionaries of this great tradition. Upon Stuyve- santians in particular falls the great civic duty of learning, knowing, and understanding this great heritage of ours. You are fortunately equipped, mentally and physically, to study and understand our way of life. You must not only be the inheritors of the democratic legacy, but having received this inheritance, you are morally obligated to assume the great burden of carrying on this way of life, enriching it and expanding its meaning and practices so that you may hand on to your successors the spirit of liberty, not as a spluttering faggot, but rather as a flaming torch. Sincerely, ajvla rofcl ZucLer:'na n

T0 THE GH IDUITE UF 1952 My congratulations to all graduates. You have completed a comprehensive secondary school course that is an excellent preparation for the next rung in your educational ladder. We consider this phase very important, and yet we feel that there was learning going on beyond the limits of subject matter. It was our earnest effort to develop concomitant abilities, attitudes, and interests while we were using particular subjects as a framework. I hope that you were not mere sponges, concerned with the absorption of facts, but learned to see elements of our heritage in true perspective, in terms of your surround- ings, in terms of your personal needs and interests. I hope that you have learned the joy of true mastery through diligent effort, the authority and purpose that completeness gives to any task. I hope you have begun to build a substantial philosophy of life based on belief in and understanding of yourself, with due respect for the plans and aspirations of others, for true individuality, so necessary in a democratic society, must hold dear the rights of all individuals. I hope that we have helped you to map a course of action for your future which has definiteness and purpose and direction, but it must not have the rigidity of an inflexible straight line nor a deep, unrelenting rut, that is not sensitive to changing conditions. I hope that when you pick up your cherished INDICATOR some years hence to get the thrill of reminiscing, you will find that even though some of the subjects you took with us are now shadowy in your memory, the substance of upright manhood had taken root at Stuyvesant. Sincerely yours, .grecl Schoengerg
