Mr. Berman's Mathematics Department offered us more and better courses in Mathematics than any school in New York. There were sub- jects ranging from Elementary Algebra to Solid Geometry and including Calculus, Surveying and Junior Engineering. Honor classes were con- ducted in each subject to give advanced training to the talented pupils Ilffloflg US. Many of us have first learned the true beauty of our language after taking one of the English Departments courses. Mr. Katz, the department head, hopes to have every Stuyvesant graduate aware of what makes the language he so easily uses so important to writers and poets. Special classes in Creative Writing, Speaking, Drama and Journalism have supplemented the regular course. Our Social Studies Department, headed by Dr. Steinberg, has given us a fascinating series of courses in Civics, World and American History, and Economics. A broad understanding of the problems that confront us, was successfully taught us by its excellent teachers. The science departments have gone far beyond the regular Glrriculum in order to give us the most advanced training possible. Dr. Efron's well- equipped Physics Department gave us not only the elementary material but, in addition, such courses as Applied Physics, Experimental Physics and Electronics. Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis were the extra contributions of Mr. Bowden's Chemistry Department. Zoology and Biology Laboratory courses were given by Mr. Tolle's Biology Department, in addition to the regular biology course. It is for these reasons, including special science shops for individual projects, that Stuyvesant holds sudi a high position as a science high school. Many of us will find that the foreign languages which we have studied will be of great importance in later life. Lipeles, whom many of us will remember as G. O. Adviser until his appoint- ment as Dean of the Morning Session, has charge of the school until Mr. Schoenberg arrives and is responsible for the A.M. Assembly. Both as an administrator and as a teacher. the personality of Mr. Lipeles has added a spark of vitality to the faculty of our school. Mr, Harry Marks is the Dean of the Senior Class and is a gentleman all of us have had acquaintance with during our senior year at Stuyvesant. Mr. Marks advises us in matters pertaining to education, scholarships and college. We are also grateful to him for undertaking the arrangement of the scholarship lectures. Because of his untiring effort and his faith in Stuyvesant students, many Stuyvesant boys have won scholarships, the total amount of which is increasing each year. Dr. joseph T. Shipley also performs many services for us. He is Senior Class Advisor and the Faculty Advisor of the Arista, the Honor Society of Stuyvesant. The well-liked teacher, author, poet and critic also serves as Master of Ceremonies at the commencement exercises. Dr. Shipley is also advisor to the Indicator. Mrs. Krasnogor, who is in charge of Senior Records, carries carefully through the increasingly difficult task of filling out the transcripts for students' college applications. Mrs, Marran has helped many of us obtain after-school jobs in her capacity as Place- ment Counsellor. The men and women who comprise the administrative and clerical division of Stuyvesant are persons of great character, patience and perseverance. They hold their eminence not only for the successful completion of the tasks assigned to them but because they have shown themselves concerned with their work beyond the line of duty. They have indeed earned the gratitude of every student who has attended Stuyvesant. 13

Advanced courses in languages were offered to the more fortunate among us who wished to extend their knowledge .... The sudden death of Mr. La Guardia leaves the school, as well as the depart- ing Seniors, with a deep sense of loss. The Mechanical Drawing Department, headed by Mr. Panuska, which includes the Fine Art Department, is of great importance to the student body. On the more technical side we find Mechanical Drawing, Cartography, and Architectural Engineering, which are of invaluable aid to budding engineers and architects. Freehand Drawing and the Fine Arts Laboratory offer young Picassos a chance to express themselves. Athletic prowess is a well-known quality of Stuyvesant graduates and many a famous athlete owes his success to the encouragement and training offered him by the Health Education teachers under the leader- ship of Mr. Eberly. Every student, under their guidance, develops a good body, as well as a knowledge of First Aid and the principles of hygiene. One of our most enjoyable and slightly raucous departments fin a very melodic sensej is Mr. Stoffregen's Music Department. Our Orchestra, Band, Glee Club and the Semi-Annual Concerts are its main features, but for the layman there are courses in Harmony, Musical Appreciation and the History of Music. It is well agreed that everyone should have ability at handicraft of one sort or another. Mr. Jordans Department of Mechanical Arts strives to give us the fundamental manual and mechanical skills through such courses as Jewelry Shop, Plastics Shop, Wood Turning, and House- hold Mechanics. The school Library, under the friendly gudiance of Miss Engelhardt, has been a source of both pleasure and knowledge to us. Besides a large number of frction books there is a large selection of reference and non- fiction books to meet our demands for research material. Well, there, in capsule form, youive seen our school. You've seen our teachers. They've taught us well and toiled with us mightily. We thank them with all our hearts. Let's show them that their high hopes for us and their faith in us is not unfounded.
