Deep Craven Cn Each Heart ' For many years past. we teachers have found it pleasant and fitting to speed departing students with utterances about the bright and immediate opportu- nities that await them in the world outside our doors. Probably over this space of time, there is a phrase or at least a word to match every receding foothall. It was easy to tallx when skies were bright and un- troubled and the vastness of space separated one people's troubles from another's. But another year has rolled around and yet an- other age. And here you stand on the threshold of your school and here am I. keenly aware that no reference to the classics. no neatly turned phrase-W -nothing from the past is worth repeating. Rather cling tenaciously to the conviction that in the near future all those things you so rightly desire will he at hand and life will resume its ev- en course. But grim as your purpose now, graven in each of your hearts must remain the ful- some picture of the peace-loving America in which Stuyvesant has prepared you to live with security and dignity. Do what you must do now and get it done quickly. Remember your well-loved land endures unchanged, and no matter what intervenes, there is never too little time left to dig your fingers into her rich soil and find there what you are destined to find. what can I tell you now? Wllat can I say when the rumble of gulls encompasses the earth and echoes and re-echoes in every heart? Where are the words to explain the sorrow already etched in so many faces? I wish so devoutly that I might speak of fun and frolic and good jobs and fine homes f-material things which are your heritage, your birthright. l wish l might spa-zilt too. of the many and wondrous things that make America the finest place on earth. Instead my task must be grimly realistic. l must admonish you first of all to he strong of heart and mind. Many of you will he called upon to take up the sword in defense of an ideal which this nation and her allies has determined is the only fair and proper basis for the establishment of postwar life. Un your shoulders rests the burden. In your minds dwells the unswerving determination and in your strength lies the guaranty of victory. , It is not simple to put aside eten for a little, the dreams of youth establishment in your chosen pro- fession or pursuit of higher learning. But all this and more may become necessary and l therefore t must urge you as your friend to steel yourself against impatience. Sincerely, ' JOHN fl. Nl'iVNlAliKlCfi
