Here's a few of them and the things they've done, Though most of them seem to be just having fun. Helen Bryant and Lucille Brands Are happily married, I hear. Fred Inman is Lucille's man While Don Davis is Helen's dear. Well, old Harry Truman is out of a job Since Henry Bennett's up there. That makes jane Hemme the nation's first lady, Oh, what a brilliant pair! Things ain't the way they used to be When Leland was lovin' Joan. Leland has married Lorita, you see, And Joan's without a man. jerry Bogard, the class's number one crooner Has now become a well-known swooner. Though he sends the girls, he disgusts the men, And so his career may soon come to an end. Janice, Peggy, and Mary Ann Have formed an Old Maid's Clan. Now they're 40, but they've still hopes Of finding them a man. Phyllis Jolliff had three more kids, That makes a total of nine. Golly, I hope that'll be all She has enough for a time. Long blond hair and eyes of blue She sure has the boys in a tumble. She's making a hit on Broadway too- That cute little Alberta Pummill. Joyce Conrad, with her winning way, Has really won something grand. Bobo's home, and home to stay A wedding is what they plan. James Roth, President of our Senior Class, And one that we all adore, Has captured the heart of a sweet little lass, By the name of Bonnie Moore. Nadine Stokes and Shirley Rhein Are taking dictation and doing it fine. They're working at that Well-known firm, The HALLER, MANATT, AND JACOBS CONCERN. Lonnie and Johnnie, those adorable boys, Have a flourishing business full of joys, They run a taxi, or so they've said, People ride the convertible-a dollar a head! Max Borchert still- has that same old line That he always uses every time, The other night I saw him out sparkin' With his newest girl friend, jerry Larkan. Money, money is in the hands of Hank, Since he's cashier of the city bank. We wonder why they trust him so, He'll probably take the dough and blow! Billy Cook, SHS's football star, In the coaching field has gone very far. With Owen assisting he's gained fame- Coaching the team of Notre Dame! Here is some news that is really alarmin' Two of our classmates have started farmin' And the happy couple pitching the hay, Are Betty june Rubach and Gordon Gray. The town of Stuttgart is kept in peace, By Harvey Hatfield, Chief of Police. And one of the police on the job daily Is a motorcycle cop named Bud Stahley. Some of the boys have really gone far, Harold Stinson owns a cigar stand and bar. Another success is our james Ball, Now the manager of Pastime Pool Hall. The high school office has a new worker It's Emma Erleman-and she's no shirker. Every day you can find her there, Trying to type--and pulling her hair. jimmy Clemons, from the Ricebird staff, Now edits the STUTTGART DAILY, While Frankie Oltman, a cute little chap Is a clown. for BARNUM AND BAILEY. In life, june Shirkey has gone very far, She even has learned to play the guitar. She strums all evenin', seeking the favor, Of Wayne Paul Wessels, next door neighbor Hazelle McCollum takes Mrs. Adair's place And Arthur Meins is her man. His tenor voice has deepened to bass, So he now directs Glee Club and Band. FRESHMEN Prefident ........... ,...... M ary Simpson Vive-Preyident .,... ...... With the 1949 football season closed we look back in Senior fond memory at the 14 games won, and not any lost or tied. The Ricebirds scored 447 points to their opponents 83, with a powerhouse that will long be remembered in the state as a great team. The team next year will have great possibilities but not much experience. But we know they will give their all for , Stuttgart High. This '49 squad will be remembered here forever. So we pay our final tribute to the Ricebirds and k their great coaches. O O T B A L L Coach Ned Moseley Coach W. E. Higginbotham The 1949 Stuttgart Ricebirds held the distinction of being the only undefeated, untied team in the state of Arkansas. The Maroon and White eleven won eleven regularly scheduled game and their playoff games to gain the state class AU championship. Five members of the team gained all district recognition, Billy New- ton, Ray Hefley, james Ball, jerry Bogard, and Billy McMillin. Four of these also were placed on the all state selections. Stuttgart 35 Beebe 6 The Ricebirds started their show of power in the initial game as they overwhelmed a tricky Badger eleven. This marked the first Stuttgart vic- tory over Beebe in their long rivalry. Stuttgart 26 Searcy 7 Searcy, who later went on to win the district 2 title, was the first victim for the Ricebirds at home. Stuttgart 21 Warren 0 ' Ray Hefley broke loose for three long spectacular runs to give the Birds an easy victory over the Lumberjacks from Warren. Stuttgart 34 Clarendon 6 The Lions were no match for the maroon and white clad boys as they prepared for their first district game with DeWitt. Stuttgart 13 DeWitt 0 A muddy gridiron and a bunch of determined Dragons gave the Ricebirds plenty of troubles when they took their first district game from their south Arkansas county rival. Stuttgart 13 Wynne 6 The second district victory for the future champions came at the ex- pense of the Yellowjackets probably the best team the Ricebirds met all year. Newton sparked the Birds over this previously unbeaten team. ames Roth Larry Owen George Stevens Letter 4 A Letter 4 Letter 4 Stuttgart 12 Conway 0 Stuttgart gave the entire state indications of things to come as they snapped the Conway string of six victories. The Wampus Cats had been tabbed the number one team up to this game and later went on to the semi-finals in the state playoff. Stuttgart 20 Helena 13 The Ricebirds dedicated Helena's new stadium by crushing the In- dians hopes of repeating their District 6 Championship. It was far from easy as the Central team gave Stuttgart as much as they could handle for three quarters. A good line stand and a 98 yard drive put the game in for Stuttgart in the final quarter. Stuttgart 25 Forrest City 14 The district championship game found an inspired Ricebird eleven piling up a 19 to O margin at the half and coasting to victory over the Mustangs. Stuttgart 33 Marianna 6 Hefley's first three passes to Cook for three early touchdowns, and the newly crowned district champs rolled in a snappy Porcupine eleven. Stuttgart 49 Monticello 0 Captain Newton returned the opening kickoff 85 yards and a touch- down and the powerful Ricebirds were well on their way in the first round state championship play off. The Ricebirds piled up a 27 to 0 lead in the first quarter and shut the door on the Monticello offense not allowing them a first down until late in the second quarter. The last half was mostly for the subs. Stuttgart 46 Piggott 6 A snappy Mohawk eleven was no match for a group of championship hungry Ricebirds. This was the only home appearance for the Stuttgart team in the play offs, and the power ladened Birds showed the homefolks some fine blocking and tackling. Stuttgart 73 DeQueen A fitting climax to the season of 14 wins was the crushing victory over DeQueen which gave the Stuttgart Ricebirds an undisputed right to the state championship crown. The maroon shirted team topped all of their other performances as they extended a dazzling offense marked by vision blocking and excellent running on the part of Hefley, Newton, Hiatt, Owens, and Stinson. y 1- Bee Inman Dee Inman Letter 4 Letter 4 Roland Endres George Stahley Letter 4 Letter 4 john Conrad Jo Rosencrantz Letter 3 Letter 2, 3 1 l 1 l -'S-ff s . , , ,WJ ' 1 Q .K-, Herbert Schroeder james Black Letter 3 Letter 3 45 K' 'iiir gal L, x 'ef ,Qs Y' 1 ne.
