Football has always been a major sport in S. H. S. Her teams have been twice western State champions and have successfully com- peted with some of the best teams of the State. The 1924 season was officialy opened by defeating the fast Bosse Bulldogs of Evansville, by a decisive score. The .game was hard- fought throughout, brilliant open field running by Shipley and Captain Simpson, and pass snaggin-g by Whitsell, being features of the ga-me. 1 Profitmg by experience, the Sturgis Eleven displayed an entirely new brand of attack the next Saturday against Princeton, by displaying a strong running and bucking game. The game was one-sided through- -out, Sturgis gaining at will. Wynns and Watters starred for Sturgis. The fastest game of the Season was played the following Saturday with Henderson. Sturgis outplayed, and out-fought the powerful Hen- derson eleven but were unable to break up passes at critical times and lost the game. The defensive and offensive work of the line featured the game. Kavanaugh and Culley played brilliant ball. The first track meet in the football season was the game with Providence. The whole team starred in the one-sided contest, the back-field seeming able to gain at will. Sturgis humbled the proud Marion team Oct-ober 30 in a listless contest by a score of 13 to 0. Sturgis met Clay the following Friday on McCauley field. The Sturgis squad was doped to winby a large score but due to listless play- ing defeated Clay bya small margin. . Sturgis defeated the powerful Owensboro1 Red Devils in a hard- fought contest November 14. The game was played on a muddy field which prevented either.tea1m from making consistent gains. Simpson made the only score when he received a fumble and raced forty yards for a touchdown. 1 The long heralded Turkey Day game with Morganfield was played with all the traditional spirit and ended in a tie, neither team being able to score. Shipley was the outstanding star for Sturgis, -making one gain of forty-two yards and several fifteen yard gains. 1Culley, star end, and Kelley right guard, were out of the line-up with mumps. This is the second time Sturgis has won the championship as she tied with Paducah for thehonors last year. The team has bright hopes for a vcry successful 1925 season as nine letter men will rep-ort for fall training. She has, by far, the hardest schedule in Western Kentucky as games have been scheduled with Marion, Owensboro, Bosse, Mayfield, Clay? 1-Tienderson, Princeton, Georgetown College Freshmen and Mor- gan 16 . sess Crue siufqeon ms 1 'X i 'A 1 1: .1 1 X -111. 11 11,1 11 1111 11 111 1Z1 ,111 1 11 1'11 11 I :I 111-1 11.1 1 11 11.31- 51.4.-Q11 '1111 1. 111 111 1 111 1' ' 1111 1111 1.11 11 11 1111' 11111 1 11 11 11' 1'11 1111 1111 Q1 W' 11 11 11 11. 1111 11.2.11 1 1 111 111' 1 1 1, 1 11 1'11 11111 1 1, age 1 1 QP 11,1 1 '1 11'1 1111 1111 1 .115 0,1 5 ji? 1 . ff if W f 11Ef' P it 12 'i:1' ..-i:..:Lg 1 1 '
