— warn STURGENSIAN Sturgis, Michigan 1965 Co-Editors _Nancy Kendall Cynthia Lawrence Adviser _Turley Tudor I Foreword The ideals of this year ' s graduating class can best be expressed by an excerpt from a speech to have been given by the late John F. Kennedy. ... This is a time for courage and a time of challenge. Neither conformity nor complacency will do. Neither the fanatics nor the fainthearted are needed ... Let us stand together with renewed confidence in our cause . . . The challenge is here and now. The world is in a continuous state of unrest. Our own country is fighting the forces of racial and religious prejudice. This generation, the product of our times, must face the challenge with courage and unity. We must use our education to discern falsity and deception. The guidance of the adult world of today must help us overcome the obstacles before us in our world of tomorrow. We must show a singleness of purpose in the struggle for peace and knowledge. 2 Time of Challenge . . . ror Administration and Faculty . 6 Seniors . 28 Underclassmen . 58 Sports . 86 Organizations and Activities . 106 Patrons . 146 3 To many of us, Mr. Raymond C. Smith is a disembodied, though familiar voice on the radio. He broadcasts the school program at noon and all Sturgis High School football and basketball games. In reality, Mr. Smith is much more than a radio commentator. He has taught in the Stur¬ gis school system for twenty-one years, he is a guidance counselor, and he is instrumental in the summer Day Camp program. Mr. Smith teaches American literature and English 9. A career of forty-six years as a teacher has made him an efficient and capable instructor and an understanding and sympathetic counselor. To you, Mr. Smith, in thankful recognition of your long years of devotion and service to youth, we the class of 1965 dedicate the 1965 Sturgensian. We Dedicate This Book To You . . . Mr. Raymond C. COMBS General Manager and Executive Vice- President of Harter Corporation 8 of Providing the Best in Education This group of dedicated men has been constantly devoted to the cause of better education in the Sturgis Public Schools. They have given of their time unselfish¬ ly to provide higher quality teachers, curriculum, and equip¬ ment for the benefit of every stu¬ dent from elementary school through graduation. Their effort for our schools s hould not pass unnoticed because they are not personally in evidence. Their in¬ fluence is everywhere. Our deep¬ est gratitude and respect reflect their continuing concern that each student receives the best educa¬ tion possible from the Sturgis school system. HAROLD YOUNG Superintendent of Sturgis Newport Busi ness Forms GEORGE ABEL Vice-President and Cashier at First National Bank OLIN LEPARD Doctor Each year students, faculty, parents and others look forward to the publication of the yearbook. Many become curious as to the format of THIS year ' s book and how it differs from preceding years. After the initial curiosity has been satisfied, a deeper interest develops as one browses through the yearbook, looking at the pictures and articles. Life perhaps could be compared to looking through the yearbook. There is curiosity about new things happening, but this is often a surface interest. For those who are to succeed, a more last¬ ing interest must be developed. As one develops meaningful interest, it becomes evident that chal- length are ever present. Challenges set goals and as these goals are accomplished new goals de¬ velop. The theme of this year ' s yearbook is Challenge. The Sturgensian Staff, the Faculty Advisor, and all other people responsible for the production of this fine yearbook have met their challenge by having the yearbook completed and published. Now it is up to each of us to meet our challenges as we travel the highway of life and as we refer back to this y ear ' s yearbook in years to come, reminiscing, we will be reminded that the 1964-65 yearbook staff challenged us to meet our personal goals. Congratulations to all on this fine yearbook. Sincerely yours, Warren J. Fudge T Superintendent and Principal Present 10 Messages to Student Body I am happy to have the opportunity to congratulate the Sturgensian Staff, the Faculty Advisor, and all the other people who have been responsible for the pro¬ duction of this very fine yearbook. The theme of this year ' s yearbook, Challenge, seems very appropriate and should definitely be thought provoking for all of us at this time. This yearbook depicts through words and pictures an accurate and interesting history of the many activ¬ ities of Sturgis Senior High School throughout the past year and portrays the personal characteristics, ambi¬ tions, and accomplishments of the individual members of the Senior Class. The value of this yearbook to its possessors will increase as the years go by, for it will serve as an enjoyable source of information during the many occasions for reminiscences which will present themselves in the future. We all know her as, Karen Kuhnhenn, our exchange student from Lubeck, a city in West Germany. Karen is an only child and lives with her mother and grandparents when she is at home. This year she made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Sigrist and their three children. Karen loves people and wanted to come to the United States to learn English more thorough¬ ly and see life from a different perspective. She finds the climate goes from one extreme to .another; and believes teenagers over here have more freedom, especially when it comes to school. She said school wasn ' t any easier, but that kids took it more in their stride. Karen has had a busy schedule. She has been active in G.A.A., Pep Club, Art Club, French Club (in which she was elected President) Debate and Forensics. Her courses included: American literature, U.S. history, government, French, and college English. The students at S.H.S. have enjoyed having Karen here with us this year. It has been a good year, Karen, and one which will be long remembered. Karen tells student body about Christmas in Germany at the Christmas Assembly. Karen ' s smile will long be remembered. Throughout the year, not much was expected from the boys that composed the ' 64-65 squad. Predictions placed the team in a scramble for the T-V basement. The result was altogether different. The composite picture shows a 10-9 win-loss column and a 7-5 T-V record which was good enough for third position behind Hillsdale and Albion. Spirit, hustle, and key strategy by Coach Dillon seemed to pave the way to Trojan success. In tournament play, Sturgis advanced to the finals of District No. 5 play. There, they were stung by the Hornets of Hillsdale in a heartbreaking one point decision. This was as good a showing as any of the Sturgis fives of the past few years have done. Co-captain, Jim Rommel, the team sparkplug, led the team in scoring, finished third in T-V scoring, and also rated high in assists. Stan Davis finished in the top five in league assists. Co-captain Jim Miller and senior, Bill Strodel helped to clean the backboards for the Trojans. Both registered high in the league department. Jim got a late start in the season due to injuries, but came on strong later to be of great value. Bill was also a good defensive man, which helped gain victories. The team led in Twin Valley defense, an overlooked aspect in basketball. The fifth senior, Lee Lahmeyer, had the difficult task of being fill-in man. He had to be ready to substitute for any player. Juniors Tom Wenzel and Mike Yoder saw considerable action this year, and will provide a good basis for next year ' s team. All the boys 92 did outstanding and commendable jobs. FRONT ROW: Coach Tufts, Brian Fiebelkorn, Dick Messner, Norm Horning, John Moss, DaveKane, Bob West. This year ' s Reserve team compiled an overall nine win and seven loss record. This does not indicate the whole story. The games that the team lost were close and contested right down to the final buzzer. Another handicap to the squad was the periodic loss of regulars to the varsity during the season. Coach Frank Tufts has done an excellent job of grooming the boys. Coach Dillon will have an outstanding field to select a sound varsity team. Next year will bring a fine club and record to Sturgis High. It ' s time out for an important conference. Get that ball! Little Men on Road to Varsity Don Gage and his freshman crew enjoyed a fine 13-4 record during the 64-65 campaign. Throughout the year the boys played good ball and showed marked improvement. This group coupled with the Reserve squad will give the coaches an abundance of choice material with which to work. The basketball future of Sturgis will be a bright one. i - v 1 i CA ] vHS o lift % 11 i 1 A|||H ■ J I . tVmMl j Jr I 1 feTgt i - i r y jr v BACK ROW: Coach Gage, Denny Blodgett, Mark Kennedy, Greg Grabe, Dick Benson, Dan Betke, Gus Carver, Larry Grimm, Morris Fennerman. Baseball Teams Slug Though the 1964 baseball team did not have a winning season, it did show flashes of potential. In¬ juries to pitchers Denny Gilbo and Tom Dillon cut team strength. Next year the team will have a good nu¬ cleus of returning lettermen—Jim Rommel, Lee Lahmeyer, Bob Per¬ sons, and Jim Coy who was voted the most improved player. The reserve team breaks even this year with a 7 and 7 record under the fine tute¬ lage of Coach Oom. The ex¬ perience should pay off for the varsity team next spring. Don ' t throw it to me! Thank you is not a sufficient word to express our appreciation to Mr. Tudor for all his help and guidance, and to Mr. Niles for his never-ending patience. Special recognition is also due to Elliot Wait and Bill Strodel, who, though not on our staff, contributed copy for our book. We also wish to thank you, the students, faculty, and administration for your cooperation. It was published bi-weekly and occupied a page in THE STURGIS JOURNAL. Articles included some¬ thing of interest for everyone: club news, school activities, sports, the Student Spotlight, articles on various members of our faculty, alumni news, the Top Ten Tunes, S.H.S. Calendar, surveys of opinions on many topics, and outstanding articles written by other high school students. Although it was rather difficult to meet those deadlines, everyone worked hard to publish a paper of which we can be proud. Wendell Moyer and Inez Sutton work together in leading and helping the club members. Denny Bothamley presides over a monthly meeting. The Science Club, which was reorganized last year, is under the direction of Mr. Moyer and Mrs. Sutton. The purpose of the club is to foster pupils ' interest in science and careers therein. Membership is open to anyone who is interested in science and who does a project or research paper dealing with some phase of a science. Many varied activities were enjoyed by members of the club, including lectures, demonstrations, movies, and a trip to the Science and Industry Museum. In addition, the Science Club members took on the responsibility of man¬ aging the Science Fair as they did the previous year. With the capable guidance of Mrs. Robert Boyle, advisor, and Mrs. Ike Notestine, club mother, the Future Homemakers of America was organized for 1964-65. The first formal meeting of the year started with installation of officers. As a community service, the club took rolls to all the nursing homes and cookies to the S pecial Education School and the Froh Home. The club attended a Fall Regional meeting in White Pigeon and planned a trip in the spring to the State meeting. Club Membership Increases Together with the officers, members plan monthly meetings and arrange for guest speakers. The members work for points doing special activities. During National Education Week they ush¬ ered at open house, gave apples to the teachers, and designed dis¬ plays throughout the school. At Christmas, this group sent gifts for the children at the Training Center and donated to them $150.00 which was earned at their annual Thanksgiving Dance. Members also had the opportun¬ ity to attend the F.T.A. Workshop at Western Michigan University on November 21, and a sorority meeting in Vicksburg. The future teachers worked together to gather gifts for chil¬ dren at the Training Center. S.H.S. Forum Debates “Ban the Bomb” Rarely does a week go by without seeing the Debate Club holding a 7th hour practice session. It has become part of the weekly routine here at S.H.S. to see them all assemble to add those im¬ portant finishing touches. Of course this isn ' t the only time we see them hard at work. They are continually searching for information in libraries, a facility they have learned to use with the utmost skill. In addition, debaters learn to take notes quickly, to speak effectively, and to use the criticism of many people, such as teachers and professors. The purpose of debate as an academic organization is not to entertain but to develop these things and an understanding of current events. Instead of a team, a 16 member Debate Club called the Forum was organized this year. A consti¬ tution was written and officers were elected. Through the well trained advice and the valuable guidance of Mr. Roger Zuercher, this club has had a successful season of 13 wins and only 7 losses. Forensics Encourages Students in Expressive Reading The word ' forensic ' refers to public discussion and comes from the Latin word forum (looks like the Debate Club stole a Forensics ' word!) However, the extent of forensics includes many areas. The traditionally loved class clowns usually find their way into Humorous reading with everything from Pigmalion to Winnie the Pooh. Interpretive reading gives our own Charlton Hestons a chance to develop their dramatic abilities in a highly expressive oratory. The class historian may dig into the past, tunnel through a famous speech or two, and climb back to the surface somewhere in the area of Declamation, exhilarated by the exercise. Speaking of exercise, imagination and creative ability are put to the test in Original Oratory, where students must write their own material. As the saying goes last but not least is Extemporaneous Speaking in which the student must be able to organize his thoughts quickly and express them clearly on a given subject. Coached by Roger Zuercher and Kenneth Paulin, this year ' s participants in these areas have done a fine job. They took part in the annual forensics contest held in March, the winners of which go on to the District Contest.- l Sturgis High School Bands FIRST ROW: Jane Hoyt, Marsha Knox, Bette Stewart, Betsy Stage, Carol Wittenberg. The marching ' band had a one hour concert at the Michigan State Fair in Detroit. The band participated in a ' pop ' concert featuring Monk Watson, and collected a first division—the twenty-fourth in a row—in the marching festival. Hightlight of the football half time shows was a tribute to John Kennedy in which the band first utilized their colored cap lights. The symphony band collected firsts in the state contest and the playing festivals. It had Christmas and spring concerts and was featured in many parades in the area. The band was recorded on WVOM, the University of Michigan radio station, appeared on WSBT-TV, and cli¬ maxed the year with the annual Band Bust. The Concert Band, which was often combined with the Symphony band, gathered a first division at the district festival, performed a spring concert, and participated in the Band Bust. With these formal divisions in the band, the Pep Band must be mentioned. They provided lively entertainment before and during half time at the Trojan basketball games. New Songs Introduced by If you ever walk into the 5th or 6th hour study halls and see toes tapping and heads bobbing in a regular beat, don ' t be surprised—just listen and you will soon hear the distant strains of musical voices. Where is it coming from? Why, the chorus room of course! Come often enough and you may learn a few songs yourself! These songs are of a wide variety, from semi-popular pieces to famous classics and Negro spirituals. All are done well under our new director, Mrs. Elaine Chesnut, who puts forth an extra effort to make chorus interesting and important to her young vocalists. Not. only does she develop music in song, but also in theory, revealing many of the mechanics of this international language. They also work on sight reading, a dexterity few of us can enjoy. The versatility of the two groups, (9th and 10th grades as one and 11th and 12th grades as the other) has been displayed in several of the school assemblies, one of which was a delightful pantomine of a Deaf Old Woman. They also perform in their annual Christmas Festival and a Spring Concert in May. This year the Chorus had the opportunity of attending an area Choral Clinic at Albion College and a Choral Festival at Portage. They also sent a representative to the Solo and Ensemble Contest in Coldwater. 124 MRS. The members have had a variety of interesting speakers. A field trip was planned for the spring. Club Intensifies Literary Interest The Library Club, under the guidance of Mrs. Polleys, is a well known organ¬ ization at S.H.S. Early in the year officers were elected who include Carolyn Per¬ kins—president, Sue Kirkham—secretary, Pam Wilkins—treasurer, and Sharon Over¬ holt—social director. The duties of the members include checking out books, keeping the file cards up to date, taking care of magazines, and aiding students in finding reference material. Each mem¬ ber receives scholastic credit for his work. They also are rewarded by the social activities in which they participate. This year they enjoyed a Christmas party and a trip to Berrien Springs Bookbindery. Co-op — Academics Plus Practical Application During the past fourteen years, Mr. Paul Casault, co-op supervisor, has given the senior students an opportunity to further their knowledge of workmanship, by obtaining jobs for them suited to their skills and interests. There are three fields that the co-op students may enter—trade and in¬ dustry, retail selling, and office work. There are forty-three students who have taken advantage of the program this year. Each student must attend at least three hours of classes a day. Co-op is a full credit course and is available to the senior as long as his scholastic record is maintained. YCC Will Sponsor Annual New Year’s Eve Dance The Youth Center Council with Mr. Paul Casault as faculty advisor has been busy this year at S.H.S. The list of activities starts with a council sponsored dance at which $150.00 was made and donated to the United Fund. These students also sponsored the New Year ' s Eve Record Hop, co¬ sponsored the Homecoming Dance, and several others. Besides planning these special activities, the council is busy handling the Youth Center it¬ self, which provides recreation such as ping-pong, pool, and refreshments. They also arranged for the appearance of several bands, which provided live music for dancing. The officers this year are Nancy LeRouque—president, Tom Vernon—vice- president, Janet Royer—secretary, and Bill Pierson —treasurer. Council members and guest speakers await opening of Christmas assembly. Counci President, Jerry Sloan, opens the program. Student Council Representatives Work Hard in Contributing to School Activities The Student Council of Sturgis High School is composed of two repre¬ sentatives from each class. Their activities include planning and conducting the Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter Assemblies which mark the begin¬ ning of each long awaited vacation. This year the council arranged for a new activity in the form of Senior Clash Day, when all seniors wore their loudest and most blinding outfits. They also handled the annual Dress-up Day for Seniors and co-sponsored the Homecoming Dance. The members are President—Jerry Sloan, vice-president—Judy Rice, secretary-treasurer— Susan Stark, Darlene Gose, Dave Studeman, Jim Holtz, Virginia Olds, and Kathy Fritz. Miss Whitelock advises the council. -A Varsity Athletes Prominent in Senior members: Jim Miller, Bill Strodel, Denny BotHamley, Jim Coy, Ron Smoker, Dale Troyer, Jim Rommel, Bob Persons, Phil Dyball, Bob Horton, Tom Vernon, Gary Rifenburg, Roger Kuhl, Don Falkenstein, Al Blood, Dan Griffith, Darryle Kelley, Jerry Sloan, Mike Gerren, Carl Quirin, Lee Lahmeyer, George Washburn, Gary Hart, Dave Noble, Dan Lori, Phil Hull. Each progressive year shows an increase in membership and strength in the Varsity Club. This year, there were sixty boys who had earned their varsity awards in athletics. Changes in the Constitution were made, and a variety of projects and activities were completed. Selling football programs at a real bargain, pillow and fertilizer bartering, hockey games, basketball games and indoor track meets were on the agenda. In the spring, all of the Seniors made their annual trip to Chicago. The Varsity Club provides many serv¬ ices for the school and is a much-noticed part of the system. MR. These dances include the initiation record hop, sock hop, and the Sweetheart Swing. In addition to this, the girls hold a pot-luck supper at the end of the year to present awards and elect officers. Members can be recognized by their traditional G.A.A. sweatshirts.
