As seventh graders, we changed from class to class and got to attend the Youth Center. Upon entering eighth grade, we prosecuted criminals in Mr. Finlay's history class and visited many interesting places on our eighth grade trip to Chicago. As freshmen, we were at last admitted to senior high activities and clubs. A place on a reserve team became a reality and not just a dream. As we entered tenth grade, homework be- came more important and many of us were seen wandering through the halls, quoting Friends, Romans, Countrymen, . . for Mrs. Bitner's English class. Our iunior class play, I Remember Mama, was a new experience for many of us. We worked hard peddling schedule pencils and selling hot dogs at the concession stand, but all the effort proved its worth when we held the Junior Prom in honor of the Seniors. Oh, yes, we will never forget Mr. Galberach's U. S. his- tory class and his dog, Rudolph. Now, our senior year is finished. We present- ed the senior play and looked forward with mixed emotions to Mr. Peck's surprise tests. We held many parties and struggled through piles of homework. But we finally made it. We are now ready to take that decisive step out into the world and see what the future holds for us, the Class of 1961. This year because of the size of tl Grade, four sections attended Foi School and representatives were elected to a Council instead of class officers. One represen- tative was chosen from each of the seven sections. Council members were: Lewis Ash, Larry Bayer, Mary Kane, Joe McMillan, Sue Reed, Connie Sadewasser, and Diana Werk- haven. There were two hundred and four students in .ig gd the seventh grade and they were guided by these sponsors: Miss Floiad Collins, chairman, Mr. Lou Lori, Mr. Schuyler Pletcher, Mrs. Mil- dred Huff, Mrs. Lenore Moss, Miss Mary A21- derson, and Mrs. Gladys Girton. Another new feature was that the seventh and eighth graders attended assemblies held in the gymnasium. We hope these students enioyed their first year at S.H.S. and wish them the best of luck in their future years at Sturgis High. Kirzches 60-Khampionshzp This year, thanks to coaches Harley Pierce and Harold McElhaney, the Varsity football team tied for the Twin Valley Championship. This is Sturgis' first championship since 1939! Excellent team spirit was shown throughout the season. The players never gave up although the oclds were often against them. Rallies were prevalent in the final minutes of several games. The most exciting game was at Albion when Mike Ash went over for the final point in the last few seconds of the game, making the final score 20-19. 60-Kapfuius ufylfl Jfvuars T.V. Giuches 60- The 1960-61 Sturgis Varsity squad tied with East Lansing for the Twin-Valley Championship. The squad opened its season with an impres- sive win over Bronson but fell to its only de- feat in the next game with the powerhouse, EastLansing. In the return engagement with E.L., spirit was at its highest peak and we trounced them 69 to 59. ln our first encounter with the other Twin-Valley teams, victories were decisively in our favor but on the second attack, we slipped through by the skin of our teeth. At Adrian we slid by with a 46 to 44 edge and Lakeview was almost as close with a 59 to 56 victory for us. Coldwater nearly up- set our victorious Trojans in an overtime but we fought back like true champions with Denny McCarthy sinking the winning bucket in the last second, giving us a 73 to 71 victory. Next on the agenda was a fired-up Three Rivers squad. We won this hair-raiser 72 to 71. ln our final game the Trojans handled the ball excep- tionally well and clinched the T-V Champion- ship with a 66 to 59 victory. Undefeated for two years, they sport a fine record of 29 straight victories. In the Twin Valley meet at Michigan State University, we finished second to East Lansing with l3V2 points, as compared to East Lansing's 153A points. We came out on top at the Re- gional meet and were presented the T960 Re- gional Championship trophy. The state meet was a repeat of our Twin Valley performance, as we finished second. BOB FORREST State Class B runner up The T961 Sturgis Netters are looking for- ward to a continuation of this fine record. Two of last year's reserves, Tom Gerow and Jamie Kerchner, along with freshman, Bob Spaniola, Ron Kerchner, and Jack Goethals, are expected to strengthen the squad. The annual Spring Concert was presented the first of May. To complete their activities, they sang for the Thanksgiving and Easter assemlolies. The annual excursion to the spring festival held at Kalamazoo was en- ioyed by everyone. GIRLS' CHOIR The Girls' Choir, composed of twenty-seven freshmen and sophomores, met twice a week. At this time they practiced the songs which they presented at the Christmas Concert, Spring Concert, and various assemblies. Each girl studies in preparation for the Senior Choir. They co-sponsored the Homecoming dance along with the Senior class and the cheerleaders. Prior to the game they sold raffle tickets on the Homecoming football and the drawing was held at the dance. A committee was organized to provide a project for each month. Some completed and tentative projects were: they presented a game between the Harlem Satellites, a travel- ling basketball team, and the S.H.S. All Stars, they sold ads for basketball programs, a penny sale, a car wash, a donkey basketball team, a penny carnival, and they planned a trip to Chicago if enough money was raised. The members sold booster badges and sponsored a record hop to earn money. With their earnings, they purchased a transistor megaphone for the school's use. Each member, developing his own theories from ex- tensive research, concentrated upon effective presentation by use of persuasion. Since there are two views to the question, the negative and the affirmative, it provided each member the chance of a varsity debate. Howe and Kala- mazoo practices, clinics, and various inter-squad debates provided good experience and prepara- tion for all members.. Our standing for the season was 4-4. At Marshall the negative won and the affirma- tive lost, at Albion we lost both, at Coldwater the negative won and the affirmative lost, and at Battle Creek Lakeview we won both. ln the tournaments at Battle Creek we beat Portage but lost to Marshall which gave us a 1-1 stand- ing.
