Passing from class to class may have been something new to them at first, but soon they were scurrying about the halls as if they had been there for several years. The class sponsors this year were Miss Floiad Collins, Mr. David Dillon, Mr. Schuyler Pletcher, Mrs. Mildred Huff, Miss Mary Anderson, and Mrs. Gladys Girton. Miss Collins acted as chairman. Because of a change in the schedule of class elections, there were no officers for the 7th grade. They will be elected in the spring for the following year, along with all underclassmen. vi H 'gf 'iv' fdq 1- ' OR' au 64 ' sf - - 1 -..- - 'x , Nxsiff' -. . 'ri' K Hgh: ' 'Y - 1 ' , . We had our class party in the old Youth Center, geography in Room 222, and our fun everywhere. In those days, the seventh grade was much smaller than it is now. As eighth-graders, we felt superior to our under- classmen, the seventh-graders, and held mock trials in Mr. Finlay's history class. We didn't get caught running through the halls as often as the year before. With the title of Freshmen, we entered high school and enjoyed the privilege of actually choosing all our subjects - well, almost all. Everyone took First Aid and practiced putting bandages on one another. Ball games and dances became more important to us. We had charge of the coat room at the ball games in our Sophomore year, and spent some of our profits on our very own dance. We were seen 48 Larry Kraft, Student Council. wandering through the halls quoting, Friends, Romans, Countrymen, for Mrs. Bitner's English class. The J-Hop and the Junior Play were the main features of our Junior activities, along with Mr. Galberach's U. S. History class, and our candy stands at the ball games. We looked up to the big Seniors and dreamed of the day when we would be grad- uatihg, too. And now, here we are, all of a sudden. We have been together as a class for six years - many of us for twelve - and now we're getting ready to go our separate ways. We've had our last high school election, our last high school dance, our last high school class. We've enjoyed all the pep meetings, parties, plays, assemblies, ball games, and even Mr. Peck's inevitable government tests. These have been our stepping-stones, and June third is our jumping-off point to a full future. forma 65 K VN Que' 'Ya' ANDREWS NANCY KAY Jr Play Crew JHop Committee Achnevement 34 Govt Day BOTHAMLEY JUDITH ILENE T 'T ? 7 Class Oflncer I3 GAA I2 34 Stur gensnan Stott J Play Cast Jr Play Crew Sr Play Cast JHop Commuttee Govt Day Band I2 3 Jr Honor Roll Homecomung Commuttee Gnrls State Qulll and Scroll ARKLIE TERRY LYNN Varsuty Club 4 Sturgenslan Staff Jr Play Cast Jr Play Crew Sr Play Cast JHop Commuttee Jr Achnevement 3 Govt Day Jr Honor Roll Homecom mg Committee Football 'I2 Baseball l 234 Wrestlung I2 Intramurals I 2 Jr Rotar an Boys State UI and Scroll f 0 6 1,-, BOWDISH BARBARA ANN G A A I 2 Government Day Cafeterla 3 4 Co op 4 'X ASH BETTY JEAN GAA 3 Jr Play Crew 3 JHop Com mlttee Govt Day Coop 4 Centre vnlle Hugh School I2 BOWDISH JERRY LEE Government Day Football 1 BARNELL CHARLES LEE Class Oftncer 2 34 Varsny Club 34 rp, Offacer 4 Jr Play Cast Sr Play Cast Govt Day Youth Center 3 4 Forensucs Football 'I 3 4 Baseball I Wrestlnng I 3 4 Intramurals I 2 3 4 Jr Rotarnan Rotary Youth Conference BOWMAN KAREN SUE GAA I 234 Jr Play Crew Sr ay Crew J Hop Commnttee Jr Achleve -v ment 23 Govt Day Coop 4 A BOAZ THOMAS LEE Jr Play Crew Sr Play Crew Govt D Band 1234 Intramurals I2 Golf 34 Jr Rotarlan BRAHAM MICHAEL HODGES T-1 Varsnty Club 4 Sturgensnan Staff Jr a Cast J Flay Crew Sr a Crew, JHop Commnttee, Jr Achleve ment 3, Gov't Day, Band l,2, Foot ball l,2,3,4, Track 2, Intramurals l,2, 3, Golf 3,4, Boys' State, Jr Rotarnan BREBNER JUDITH ANN Class Officer 1 GAA 1234 Stur genslan Staff Jr Play Cast Jr Play Crew Sr Play Crew JHop Commlttee J Hop Court Chorus 4 A Cappella Choir 4 Govt Day Forenslcs 2 Homecommg Committee FTA 3 French Club 34 Offucer 4 Quill and Scroll BRIGGS BARBARA ANN Class Officer 3 GAA 1234 Stur gensuan Staff Jr Play Cast Jr Play Crew Sr Play Crew JHop Commrttee JHop Court Homecommg Commnttee Homecommg Court Jr Achuevement 2 3 Band 123 Govt Day Qulll and Scroll BRILEY WAYNE R Jr Play Crew 3 Sr Play Crew JHop Commlttee Govt Day Homecommg Committee C op 4 Football I I tramurals 3 CHAPMAN VIVALEENE JO Kailua Hugh School 123 GAA 4 Sturgenslan Staff Sr Play Cast Govt Day Homecommg Commlttee Qunll and Scroll CHARRON SUE ANN CLOUSE JUDITH ANN Government Day Band1 GAA 1 CRABILL ELLEN JO Class OHICBI' A Play Crew Sr Play Crew J Hop Cam mnttee JHop Court Jr Achlevement 2 Govt Day Homecommg Commlttee CRAWFORD KATHRYN JANE GAA 123 4 Sr Play Crew Jr Play Crew Govt Day Band 1 2 3 4 Home comlng Commuttee CROSS BONNIE JEAN GAA 1234 Trolan Tnmes Staff Sturgenslan Staff Jr Play Cast Jr Crew Play Cast JHop Commnttee Achnevement 4 Offacer 4 Chorus 1 Govt Day Forensrcs 34 Jr Honor FTA 3 French Club 3 1 Sturgenslan Staff 4 Jr Play Cast Sr Play Cast J Hop Commnttee Govt Band 1 2 3 4 Jr Honor ol Homecommg Commrttee Quill and Scroll 'Q' CROSSMAN GREG J Class Offncer 24 Sturgensnan Staff Jr Play Crew Sr Ploy Cast JHop Govt Day Homecommg ootball 1 Track 1 2 Intramurals 1 23 4 Golf 234 Jr Achnevement 2 Jr Rotanan no 3 CUMMINS ROBERT E Ltbrary Club 234 Sturgensuan Staff Jr Acheuvement 23 Chorus 234 A Cappella Chonr 2 3 4 Govt Day Band CURRIER JIM F Government Day Football 2 Ti 'Cf' DeHAVEN DAVID Varslty Club 4 Jr Play Crew Sr Play Crew JHop Commlttee Govt Day Football I 3 4 Baseball I 23 4 B s ketball 23 Jr Rotarlan Boys State 'ff-3' DARBY JERRY LEE 'N' DOWTY NANCY ANN G A A I 2 3 4 Art Club I Sturgensnan Staff Jr Play Crew Sr Play Cast J Hop Commnttee Govt Day Homecom mg Court Homecommg Commnttee Drama Club I 'NJ' Class Oftlcer I Varsnty Club 234 Art Club I 2 Govt Day Football 23 ! 4 Baseball I Basketball I2 n a EVERT RICHARD RODNEY ml C? murals 234 Track 3 DARBY WILLIAM DAVID Govt Day Co op 3 Football I23 Baseball I3 Basketball I234 DAVIS GWEN G A A I 2 3 4 Ofttcer 4 Sr Play Crew Chorus 3 4 A Cappella Chonr 3 4 Govt Day Intramurals 2 3 4 1?--v 'Cv 4140, KP C J Hop Commnttee Govt Day Band I 2 3 4 OFl:cer 4 Intramurals I Rotarlan FAGER LOUISE GAA I Sr Play Crew Government Day FAIR DOROTHY GAIL A I234 Art Club 2 Tro 'fumes Staff Sturgensnan Stat? This year's Troian gridders racked up an ex- ceptionally fine record against some very stiff competition! The 1945 Sturgis eleven concluded the season with a 5 win, 1 lost record, and the 1949 club sported the identical record of this year's team, ending with 6 wins and 2 losses. There have been other good ballclubs representing Sturgis, but none have had to face as tough opponents as the 58 squad met. We finished second in the conference with a fine conference record of 5 wins and 2 losses. We first tasted defeat at the hands of an inspired Marshall eleven fbefore their home- coming crowdj by a score of 7 to 13 in a very hard fought game! We also lost the sixth game of the campaign at East Lansing's homecoming celebration by a score of 7 to 21. East Lansing was named the state's No. I Class B team at the season's conclusion. Lakeview 3 4 Coldwater 2 5 Three Rivers 1 5 Albion 0 7 Sturgis opened the season by crushing Bronson 33-6 and followed this victory with an explosive second half offense to down Battle Creek Lake- view 21-O. CWe scored all of our points in the last half.J We then traveled to Adrian and de- feated this tough Class A school 21-12. After the loss at Marshall, we returned home to blast our chief rival, Three Rivers, by a score of 47-0. Many school and conference records were re- established in this display of power. Sturgis then lost to East Lansing but rebounded by thumping Albion 35-6. The team concluded this fine season with our homecoming game against Coldwater whom we whipped 6-O in a very well played ballgame. At the season end, halfback Karl Toth fwho missed the conference scoring record by only two pointsj and guard Dick Grabe were selected on many All-State squads. Karl and Dick made the All-Conference Offensive Team, while they, plus Ron Magnus fhalfbacki, were chosen on the All-Conference Defensive Team. After a mediocre start, the team was rolling in high gear at the finish. ln conference play the Varsity concluded with 8 wins and 6 losses, but they added 2 wins over Bronson for an overall record of 10 wins - 6 losses. The squad opened the campaign with an im- pressive victory over high-rated Bronson feasily the best club in the Little C J, but followed with a pitiful ex- hibition of ball handling against East Lansing's defending state champs. This in and out brand of ball continued throughout the first half of the season, however, as the season progressed, Coach Dillon's club showed out- standing improvement. We lost two games apiece to East Lansing and Adrian but after losing the first at Battle Creek Lakeview, 62 to 74, we routed the Spartans 70-37 in the return engagement. Following this power display we iourneyed to Coldwater and proceeded to rewrite the conference scoring record in a 91 to 66 trounce of the Cards. Then came the big one! Three Rivers pulled into town with an exceptional ball club, a fine record, and one victory over Sturgis already Cthey had ripped us earlier 77-5619. Approximately 312 hours later, T.R. Iimped home with a 57 to 52 defeat hanging over their heads. In the regular season finale at Marshall we won a hair-raiser 76 to 74. E llen Smith 'k 'k 'A' 'A' Student Director: Roger Marks Stage Manager: Franklin Harter Business Manager: Mary Johnsonbaugh Stage Dear After six weeks of learning lines, forgetting them, finding costumes and props, and worrying over sick actresses as well as other sundry difficulties, the Senior Class of 1959 finally worked out a production under the guidance of Mr. Hugh Tylor and his student director. On opening night, November 21, the play presented sparkling wit, pointed punch lines, and excellent character portrayals. The Ferber-Kaufman concoction entitled Stage Door opened on a living scene in The Footlights Club, a home for girls on the stage. The play is about a young actress, Terry Randall. A truly fine actress, nevertheless, Terry finds herself unable to find a part. Several forces, such as a successful Hollywood star, and a young Hollywood producer she thought she loved, tried to deter her. True to her ideals, she decided to keep to her dream, and in the end wins not only a fabulous part in a new play but the love of a Hollywood film executive whose desire is to be a director on the stage. Ably supported by a cast of thirty, the play included such characters as a Big Mary, who was little, a Little Mary, who was big, a temperamental Russian pianist named Olga, a delight- ful old lady who could never forget the theater, and many other young men and women whose common desire was to act on the stage. The actors, plus a good crew, an excellent set, and fine management helped make this senior play an evening of first- rate entertainment. 96 Future Homemakers of Amenca Left to Rught Carol Conrad Vuce President louise Smlth Presldent The Future Homemakers of America under the capable leadershup of Mrs Aluce Scheetz advusor and Mrs Robert Burton club mother began thus years actuvutues with a formal umtuatuon held un the gym The gurls mothers were mvnted to attend In the fall the club attended the regnonal FHA meetlng which was held In Portage The Future Homemakers sponsored a dance The Snowman Bounce In December that was open to everyone In the hugh school At Chrnstmas tume they went carollng at Sturgls Memorual Hospital and several of the nursmg homes nn the cnty The club members made cooknes to send to a nursmg home un Centreville after Christmas OTTICGFS for the 1958 1959 year are Louuse Smnth Presndent Carol Conrad Vnce Presndent Andrea Van Zlle Secretary Judy Abbs Treasurer Carolyn Teat ers Reporter and Hustornan Phyllus Sadewasser Par lnamentarran Mary Boocher Song Leader Bonnie Swlhart Pianist and Joyce Burton Recreation Leader Jud: Abbs Treasurer Back Row Bom-ngSwnhart Pnamst Joyce Burton Recreatlon Leader Mary Boocher Music Leader Carolyn Teeters Reporter Hnstonan Phyllis Sadewasser Parlnamentanan 4334 KJ Front Row L to R Joyce Burton Bonme Swuhart Carol Conrad Loulse Smlth Jud: Abbs Phyllis Sadewasser Carolyn Teeters Back Row Lmda Hetzler Jean Keagle Cormne Jeftery Mary Ann Boochery Mrs Aluce Scheetz Mary Lou Nelson Marlorle Oxender Janet Washburn Sue Smith 98 S I , I , I I - I I I ' ' I 1 Q .. . , . . mtl , I ' 11 1 f ,, . . 1 5 ' f 1 o . . , ' 'suv T . . . - 3 I I f ' I ' r I 1 F ' 1 I I ' I 1 7 I F I ' I 1 ' I 1 I I 7 : ' , 7 f F I F ' ' I 1 . 4 A ' 1 ' , 3 Ei 'V K ' , W . 3 Q , 5' H ' ' 6 ATM' ' 3 0 .1 A F' , . 1 v f .
