The combina- tion of her knowledge and sense of humor has made her classes not only educational but more interesting and enioyable. Her patience, understanding, integrity, and memorable friendship will be a great aid as we wander up the path of life toward maturity and success. Her twinkling eyes, pixie smile, and extended helping hand will always be included in our happy memories of our tour years in high school. With sincere respect and unexpressible appreciation, we say, Thank you, Miss Elizabeth Whitelock. 3 Q Allen Crossman Sports Edu tor Joyce Swalley Art Edu Ol' Marilyn Fiegel, Editor. mf M Su- Dave Thomasma Asslsfant Mass Whltelock Advisor rf fi Phyllus Bugelow Luterary Edrtor Carolyn Wlsler Asslstanf Llterary Editor Carolyn Lean Typing Edlfor Sally Taylor Assxsfant Typung Edwtor Kathleen Goethals Ton: Rudley Loretta George Ann Elliott Pncfure Ednors 4 Carol Alderman Loretta George Asslsfants Mary Brunson Makeup Ednor Donna Schultz, Advertising Manager. Judy Kruger, Business Manager. Sandy Burke, Sales Manager. Karen King, Lewis Garrison, Ann Elliott, Bill Willer, Carolyn Lean, Senior Editors. Carol Wheeler, Judy Richards, Lorna Horrom, Steve Boyle, Jeannine Mann, Karen King, Janell Clark, Copy Writers. Soon after the 1957 STURGENSIAN staff had been selected last September by our capable advisor, Miss Whitelock, they be- gan discussing possible themes, color scheme, and dedication. Finally the theme f was narrowed down to one, and our Edi- tor and Assistant Editor began setting up the dummy and working with the Art Editor on the idea of the theme and how to work it out to good advantage throughout the entire book. The Picture Editor and her staff worked with Mr. Roy Niles as he took class and activity pictures. As these were developed the Make-up Editor and her staff began their endless task of pasting. The dedication was voted on at our first class meeting, with the final decision being unanimous as to who this, our yearbook, was to honor. lt was then time for the Literary Editor and Assistant to begin distrib- uting assignments to the copywriters. As the completed work was handed in, their iob was to proof-read and occasionally re-write all copy, while the Typing Editor saw that it was typed correctly in the proper form before each deadline. Our Advertising Managers spent much time during the first semester pounding on the doors of various business concerns in Sturgis obtaining ads. As the second semester rolled around, some of our work had begun to take shape, and advertising posters began appearing throughout the halls of S. H. S. Just looking at the final outcome of our 1957 STURGENSIAN was very rewarding, and on Class Day when we unveiled it to meet with your approval, we forgot at once the work put into it. As we in future years look back through the following pages, we are sure they will bring back many happy experiences of our four memorable years at Sturgis High School. 5 Otto Goethals J Earl Mallet Richard Freeman Harry Willer Ernest Schaeffer Olin Lepard Harold Young Hresidett Harry Willer Secretary Richard Freeman Treasurer Ernest 'Schaeffer To the Senior Class of l957: As President of the Board of Education you know me well, I am a man of fevv words, but I hope my actions, friendship, sincerity, and good intentions prove I am a friend, with the interest and welfare of present and future Seniors at heart. All members of the Board hope you have learned to ac- cept your due responsibilities in life as you approach maturity. God Bless each and every one of you. We all wish you the best of luck in your chosen careers. Harry Willer 6 I C fffwvff O O 0 Of course, we all know that our school cannot be run efficiently without the administrative department which is made up of our superinten- dent's staff and the principal's staff. Superintendent Bodley, along with his staff of Mrs. Shuman, receptionist, Mrs. Quirin, book- keeper, and Miss Bensing, secretary, handles the business transactions for Sturgis High School and the bookkeeping for the Board of Education. They order and receive supplies, distribute the mail and payroll, handle extra-curricular activi- ties, class accounts, and administer the policies proposed by the Board and provide them with a report on the results. ln the upstairs office you will always find either Mr. Miller or his secretary, Mrs. Freeland, work- ing to help one of us in our extra-curricular activities, making out a tardy or absent slip, or helping us to find some lost article. 5 i i l i Mr. Bodley, SUPERINTENDENT These are the people we have to thank for our placements into the classes we desire to attend. Coach Dillon This year the reserve basketball team, under the direction of Coach Maher, had a fairly successful sea- son, although they were composed mainly of inexperienced boys. The first half of the season they won half their games, winning four and losing four. They beat Albion, Lake- view, Coldwater, and Marshall and were downed by Adrian, Three Rivers, Bronson, and East Lansing. The last half of the season they did- n't do so well though, as they lost six and won only two. Their two victories were over Bronson and Three Rivers, two teams which had defeated them earlier. Jerry Todd started at one guard throughout the entire season. The other guard position was shared be- tween Dave Dobberteen, Jerry Dar- by, and Denny Wenzel. At the for- ward spots were Max Sayles, who was second in the conference in scoring, and Ron Magnus. However, due to an iniury to Magnus, Ed Purdy and Mike Eckert saw quite a bit of duty at his forward. Pat Port- er and Wayne Kimble alternated at center. Our conference victories w,ere over Albion, Coldwater, Three Rivers, Lakeview, and East Lansing. The two Trojan defeats came at the hands of Marshall and Adrian. The Trojans also took two nonfconference wins from Vicksburg and Howe, but were defeated by Coldwater, Bronson, and Lakeview. The biggest share of the pitching duties rested on the shoulders of Jim Hanko, with a 2-4 record, and Bob Rohrer, with a 3-2 showing. Another pitcher, Bill Willer, finished with a 2-O mark. It was presented in the Sturges-Young Auditorium and was the first time .hat a Junior Play had been presented two nights consecutively before an audience. Jenny Kissed Me is the humorous story of Father Moynihan and his efforts to make Jenny, a teenager, hep . Mrs. Deazy, is Father Moynihan's housekeeper and Jenny's aunt. She brings Jenny into the Father's home much against his will. Michael Sanders lived with the Father, noticed Jenny's good features, and liked her better without the hep changes. He fell in love with her but Father Moynihan disapproved and tried to get her to go out with other boys. Jenny dated others but didn't really enioy herself because she loved Michael. After doing away with her improvements, she and Michael fell in love, obtained Father Moynihan's approval, and decided to get married. Mr. Tyler directed this successful and amusing play aided by the student directors. Don't squizzle your lips together. Are you really leaving? I f As a climax of five weeks of hectic rehearsals, the Senior Class put on a very successful comedy by Moss Hart and George Kaufman. The title of the play was You Cari't Take lt With You. The scene of the conflict between the outsiders and the family , was Grandfather's house. Here is where the ice man, Mr. DePinna came to stay, where Penelope and Paul Sycamore raised Essie and Alice. Here is where Ed, Essie's husband, played his xylophone, here is where Donald and Rheba poked iibes at each other, where Kolen- khov taught ballet, where Henderson got con- fused over the family's antics, where the F.B.l. cracked down on the circular-printing. Here is the place Tony fell in love with Alice, where his parents got headaches but were finally won over, where Olga helped cook dinner, and finally, where Grandpa reigned supreme. The cast had to work hard to make Mr. Tyler's, the Student Directors' and the various commit- tees' efforts worthwhile. The play proved to be very successful. This was made possible with co-operation from the bancl under the capable direction of Mr. Robert Welty. Together with the Troian staff they man- aged to get the papers out on time plus an extra six page mimeo for Christmas. The class, under the direction of Miss Whitelock, sent the school paper to the alumni, exchange schools, and businessmen. The student body, whose whereabouts and com- ments make up the paper, had few complaints. The chief purpose of our staff was to have some- thing new and different in each paper. A clinic was attended by the editors in the fall where new material was found, which proved to be very useful. ln this class is taught the basic art of news writ- ing, skills, and techniques.
