The usual crowd of about forty fellows turned out for practice. At the end of the week twenty-two fellows still remained. These twenty-two fellows went through three weeks of hard drilling. The first game found five of the regulars ineligible-this left seventeen fellows to carry on the football schedule. But these fellows came up to the mark. The school standards were upheld and we won seven out of ten games. The team's fighting ability was known to all Michigan and Indiana. VVe won more than our average of games and finished the season with much credit to our Coach and School. Coach Carrigan made the most out of the green timber at his disposal and hammered out a winning team. After a few weeks of grilling practice the squad was ready for the Garrett game. Both teams showed good coaching and acted like mid-season mcn. The game ended with a 6-6 tie. Albion was the next team to be encoun- tered. Although the heavy Albion team out-weighed the home team they were unable to pierce our defense. Sturgis had one chance to win this game but Roger Grove was downed after a 48 yard run in the final period, and the game ended 0-0. Vicksburg furnished a good practice game for the team, the final score being 26-0. Sturgis was allowed to score early in the game. The Vicksburg squad found Sturgis too fast and jumpy. The Alumni gave us a thrill when they showed up for their annual practice game, bcause they had several of the school's old men with them. In the opening of the game they made the customary number of breaks but finally settled down to some steady playing. The school steppd up, however, and claimed the game by showing better football and hard practice. The game went to the H. S. 13-0. Marshall has something to be proud of inasmuch as they were the first team to defeat Sturgis this season. Sturgis shoved the ball close to Marshalls goal during the 3rd quarter but were prevented from scor- ing by an intercepted pass. This game went to Marshall 6-0. Sturgis' ancient rival, Howe Cadets, invaded Sturgis determined to win at any cost. The Hoosier team had plenty of confidence, and showed plenty of pluck, but Sturgis did some hard fighting and the game was ours from the start. The fast Sturgis backs led the team to a 13-7 victory. Adrian was the second team to defeat us this season. Poorly timed passes lost Sturgis this game. This tussle was any man 's game until the final whistle blew. This proved to be more of a debate than a foot- ball game, due to the argumentative disposition of the Adrian players. Sturgis lost 14-9. The team had an easv time of it from the first and should have kept Vieksburg from seoring. Sturgis, 25, Albion, 11. The home team proved too fast for the Albion squad. Sturgis began to look forward to another Champion- ship. Sturgis, 41 3 Coldwater, 14. Borgert and the Grove brothers showed the Saur Kraut team what the State champions were made of. Alva Wliitemaii, chair- man of the orchestra committee, secured a very peppy orchestra. And it was a success, surely, because the Alumni asked them to come back and play for the Alumni Banquet. Ellis Levy was chairman of the decoration committee. At the entrance we were greeted by an arch decorated in the .Inn- ior colors-Purple and Gold. Back of this was the delicious punch, to quench your thirst and refresh yourself for the next dance. On going up stairs we entered the auditorium through an arch decorated with the Senior colors-Blue and Maize. .Inst beyond this was a very pretty fountain ornamented with white peonies. Streamers of the two classes' colors hung from the center of the ceiling to the side walls. In due time these had streamers formed by the serpentine which was thrown up into them. The stage was decorated with all four colors and beautiful white peonies. There was a large 1926 below the foot lights and above a tent made of the Junior colors. The orchestra seated themselves in the tent on the stage and preceded to play the grand march. The Presi- dents of both classes led the march. ' After the Grand March, came the dancing. Then the hour of twelve came-all too soon. GIRL RIGSIGRVIC PARTIES On October 22nd, the Girl Reserves held a Hallowe'en party in the auditorium. About 120 were present, all masked. Prizes were given to the cleverest costmnes. Refreshments of cider, cookies and apples were served. The girls had a true llallowe'en program prepared which was enjoyed. The rest of the evening, was devoted to dancing. On December 17, the Girl Reserves gave a Christmas party to all little children in the city. Sturgis, 37g Paw Paw, 16. ln spite of the fact that St11rgis had reg- istered a Victory over Paw Paw earlier i11 tl1e season, a hard hattle was looked for i11 tl1e return game. This proved rather disappointing as Sturgis had every thing her ow11 way. This fi11isl1ed the g'3lI16S 11p to the touriiaments. DISTRICT TOURNAMENT Sturgis defeated Three Rivers 30 to 13 in tl1e Optllllllg' game of the District to11r11ey at Paw Paw. This let Sturgis i11to tl1e semi-finals. Sturgis took a11otl1er hig step towards tl1e State Championship when she crushed So11tl1 llaven 39 to 12 and wo11 tl1e District Cham- pionship. This added another cup to our collection. ltr- STURGENSIAN YEAR .m REGIONAL TOURNAMENT South llaven, the first opponent Sturgis was to encounter in the Regional title meet at Kazoo, forfeited the gam.e to Sturgis. Marshall scared the Sturgis five by its hard drive in the semi-finals. Sturgis took this tilt 23 to 18. This left St. Joseph the last team to be encoun- tered. Sturgis won the Regional Class B tourney at Kazoo in its final game With St. Joe. This was one of the best and hardest games fought this year and ended with a score of 18 to 25. This makes the second time in history that Sturgis has taken the Regional tournamnt. This left Sturgis and St. Joseph to go to the All State Class B meet at lflast Lansing. Sturgis entered the State tour- nament with three of her stars under the doctoris care. Rorgert, Star Sturgis forward, was unable to play in this tournament at all. Sturgis won the first game of the State Championship against Petoskey 31 to 23, Levy, Howard and DeBolt substituting in the gap left by Borgert's sickness. Sturgis' next game was with Mt. Pleasant. This was the hardest fought game of the tournament and a crippled Sturgis squad took the game 30 to 220. This left Sturgis with one more game to win the State title. Here her old enemy the Phantom St. Joe team showed up as our opponent in the final game for State Championship. The Fighting Five after a hard and game fight lost tl1e State Championship title to St. Joseph. FOOTBALL C Continued from Page 365 The annual Armistice Day game between Coldwater and Sturgis was attended by the largest crowd in history. Sturgis fans rose up and supported their boys against the Sauer Krauters. Sturgis defeated Coldwater 13-0 the first time in 3 years. The last 2 years the teams have been held to tie scores. The 28-0 victory over llillsdale was another feather in the cap of the Crickets. This was one of the easiest games of the season. Don Grove and Whiteman showed Hillsdale some of the speed our backs pos- sessed and made long gains around the ends. The Thanksgiving day appetizer proved to be a fizzle as far as Sturgis was concerned. The Paw Paw squad backed Sturgis down the field for a 16-0 victory. T75-W STURGENSIAN '-1-1737 DEBATING tContinued from Page 545 We have a number of practice debates too. Do you? This year we had five. The first practice debate was with our affirmative team meeting the Kalamazoo Central lligh School. We didn't have a deci- sion for this debate but we were mighty proud of the showing our team made. Then our negative team met Bronson in a practice debate but we lost to them although both teams were rather evenly matched. Of course, everybody says it is just as beneficial to the speaker if you lose, but we care most about winning--naturally-and so were quite elated to win a unanimous decision from South Bend. Our last practice debates were with Constantine. We had a double header-one in Constantine, one in Sturgis the same night. Sturgis and Constantine Faculty acted as judges. The Sturgis affirmative won 6-1. The Constantine affirmative won 4-3. Now to tell you about the regular debates, first the negative went over to Hillsdale. It was the same day we had beaten them in football and so we were glad when we added another victory tunanimous too.l Bronson came over' here for the next regular debate and we had our revenge for the practice debate, winning 12-1. In January the affirmative team went to Kalamazoo to debate with the Normal High School. Although we lost the decision we were glad to have met them, for they surely know how to treat you. The last of the preliminary debates was with Edwardsburg, and our affirmative won an easy victory there. This made us eligible for the elimination debates, the first of which was held at lludson. To our great sorrow we lost. Seems as if I heard the team was royally entertained by some Hudson sheiks to a steak dinner-which doesn't sound so depressing. Another thing we did this year that I bet your school didn't do was to have a student chairmen at these debates. Kensal Wise, Lewis Chapman and Ellis Levy have taken turns being chairmen in a way that would have done credit to Mr. Ferner himself. Well, have ten minutes left to get my Civics.
