The pre-holiday games didn't add too much encouragement to this. But the team progressed, and by the end of the season the Scoopers had won twelve games and lost eight for a percentage of six hundred compared with a four-hundred rating last year, To top this, the squad had the best conference record in years, for in conference games we won six compared with two last year, Sturgis was also classified in the upper bracket with Rapid City, Belle Fourche, and Lead, all A schools Finishing behind Sturgis were Hat Springs, Deadwood, and'Custer. l-ligh points of the season were winning from Lead for second consecutive year, and winning two games from Spearfish, upsetting Spearfish in tournaments, for the first time in years. With only four return- ing lettermen and a large group of new boys, it did look gloomy, but at the end of the last game the Scoopers had completed the most successful season in the history of SHS. The new boys developed fast with the assistance of the older players and Coach Buell Woodle. When the scores had been tallied, the Scoopers had tour wins and one loss, six touchdowns to the opponents two. The Scoopers won the Football Championship Trophy for the first time in thehistory of the Black Hills Conference. ' Football Schedule and Scores They Custer ..... There were but two returning regulars to be found-Plunkett and Tarrant. Though there were many other prospects, they lacked weight and experience. To prove this, the team consisted almost entirely ot sophomores and other under-classmen. But due to the foresight of Coach B. W. Woodle in playing these boys, in the com- ing '44 season, the Scoopers will have a mighty formidable team, and will be a decided threat to the Black Hills Conference. - The Scoopers ended a victory-less season, but returning next year will be eight regulars and many new prospects to bolster the hopes of a successful season. Honorary co-captains elected for this year were Judd Tarrant and Bill Plunkett. Football Schedule and Scores We They Custer .... . . O 6 Spearfish .... . . In the field of music, variety was obtained by the addition of a mixed chorus, which the school had not been able to boast for some years. Also lending distinction was the different type of music used by the Glee Club. Such popular classics as Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, Summertime, from Porgy and Bess, Down South, and Shortnin' Bread, formed the repertoire of the group, which performed at several assembly programs and for the Rotary Club. The group was led by Miss Stoltz, who came to Sturgis this year from New Underwood, where she was director of the music department. 46 DECLAMATO RY Back Row: Miss Hershey, Clara Middlebrook, Velma Morrill, Howard Phillips, Gwen Davenport, Earlene Morrill, Betty Pedersen.
