To be eUgible a student must have earned at least thirty-four points per semester for a scholarship ribbon with A ' s counting six points, B ' s counting four points, and C ' s count- ing two points. Students who earn a scholarship ribbon for six consecutive times are entitled to a big six pin. This is an outstanding achievement at Sturges. The Scholarship Club is sponsored by Mrs. Mildred Mayer. MNit ' Au n ior n tun ii ts The Junior Optimist Club, sponsored by Mr. Bernard Fas and our principal, Mr. Laurence Cook, has continued its fine work for the past three years. This club, which is exclusively for boys, helps and encourages them to work together. Its purpose is to develop optimistic beliefs, loyalty to parents and country, devotion to school work, and respect for others. tiiraei d lhie C-lub Sponsored by Miss Rebecca Moore, the Sturgcrs Bible Club meets every Wednesday in room 105 to read and try to understand the Bible better. New members learn the science of the game from Mr. Taylor and from experienced play- ers. A continuous tournament run throughout the year and standings are published in Sturges Star, our school paper. CLUB PROQRAM The club program at Sturges is designed to give the student an opportunity to pur- sue his special interests and try out things which are new to him. When a pupil is willing to spend his time in an after school adtivity he is showing his citizenship and school spirit as well as his interest in the club. Part of our school philosophy con- cerns the boys and girl? who do not have time in their busy schedules to take all the subjects they wish, but who may, through the club program, participate in any num- ber of extra-curricular experiences. oLibraru Worhers Assisting Mrs. Norma Parker, our librarian, are the library workers. Working at the desk, checking books in and out and assisting other stu- dents to find and replace books on the shelf are just a few of the many duties of the library workers. Keep- ing over 8,000 books in circulation is a job made much easier by the help of this diligent group of students. STAR AND PANTHER EDITORS PUBLICATIONS Room 20 is a beehive of activity every day as the pub- lications class puts together the Panther Annual and the student newspaper, the Sturges Star. To be eligible for this select- ed group, a student must have a good academic standing, a sense of responsibility, and be interested in writing. STAR STAFF X. J The girls ' chorus, directed by Mr. Scott, is one of the hardest working groups at Sturges this year. The Spring Festival and the Christmas program are two of the events jiarticipated in this year by this group. Their beautiful red robes added a particularly gay note to the Christmas program. l ocai 1 p . „. ij oifS {jti ' i ' CI lib , 1.. ' On Saturday, January 27, 1962, Sturges partici- pated in the annual City-Wide Speech Contest. Under an experimental program the criticism of judging was rated to a point where only a small percentage of students would receive a superior rating. Those who received superiors were Sandy Hughes, 7th grade humorous; Karen Robinson, 8th grade serious; Helene Tanner, 8th grade humorous; Lorinda Britton, 8th grade humorous; Lani Smiley, 9th grade serious; and Bob Barrows, 9th grade humorous. Mr. Wulfing and Mr. Neal, the coaches, have worked hard and long to produce the fine team pictured. Football teaches students team play, timing, fair play, sportsmanship and helps to build character by teaching the boys to live clean lives.
