THE JEB 1970 Volume XXI Presented By The Jeb Staff Stuart High School Stuart, Virginia IN MEMOKY OF UAJ GEN J E B $TU ART GS A BORN NEAR STUART. PATRICK COUNTS ' VIRGINIA ON FEBRUARY 6,1833 MORTALLY HOUNDED IN BATTLE CF YEUfl TAVERN DIED MAV 12 1884 Stuart High School, the dear de¬ parted. For Stuart High is no more. This is its last year. No more will its hallowed halls echo the ring of bells, sound of voices and laughter, shuffling of feet as students change classes. Only silence. Stuart High has lived a long life. The time has come for a change. Seniors are honored as the last class to graduate from good old Stuart High and Ju¬ niors are honored as the first class to graduate from brand new Patrick County High School. But a new school can ' t and won ' t make us for¬ get the old. But, like our parents made Stuart High belong to them, we shall make the new school be¬ long to us. Soon it will have memories of its own. So, Farewell, SHS; and Hello PCHS. 4 5 6 8 9 11 12 13 14 15 Academics MR. ROBERT P. Social Studies 20 The School is a living challenge, a changing thing. Courses change — activities multiply — responsibilities grow. As the school adjusts to society ' s wishes, it improves methods of helping students. This is an on going process which involves the co-operation of every¬ one — school faculty, principal, vice principal, high school secretary, custodians, cafeteria workers, and the students who walk through the halls of Stuart High School for the last time this year. Out of it comes an understanding of family and friends — knowledge of how hard one must study — evidence of interest about a shrinking world — the desire to read a good book and to overcome the problems we face in the world today. These devoted teachers not only spend countless hours preparing their courses of instruction, but spend much time in advising and giving help to students in their extra-curricular activities. Their in¬ fluence is clearly evident in every facet of school life. On behalf of the last JEB, we would like to say thank you for everyone to the faculty of Stuart Elementary School for work and leadership that has made solid citizens out of many of their ex¬ pupils. This year ' s room mothers include Mrs. John D. Helms, Mrs. William H. Doss, Mrs. Thomas Alexander, Mrs. Curvie Smith, and Mrs. Raymond Curry. The mascots, also chosen by the Seniors, participate in Class Day and the other graduation activities. The Class of ' 70 mascots are Duane Edward Williams and Kimberly Dawn Wimbish. The teachers who sponsor the Seniors provide the impetus for the gradua¬ ting class. Mrs. William C. Staples, Mrs. Robert Martin, and Mrs. Wayne Flippin spent many hours making the preparations which were so necessary for graduation. 40 In Memoriam William Kenneth Martin June 4, 1952 September 14, 1969 To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under heaven. A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to reap; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace. I know that there is no good in them, but for a man to rejoice, and to do good in his life. I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him. Many decisions had to be made regarding type, form, and other basics of producing a yearbook, and trying to meet deadlines became a constant struggle. The sports section of the 1970 JEB was put together by Andy Anderson and Debbie Belton. Andy, a senior serving his first year on the staff, and Debbie, a junior second year staff member, endeavored to contribute their part to the annual. Steve Cooke kept the records of annual purchases as Sales Man¬ ager, and Edward Hopkins served as both Business Manager and Head Photographer. Serving as editor of the senior organizations, and features sections of the JEB was a time-consuming task for Billy Doss. Drawing up layouts and identifying pictures were only the beginning of the work to be done. SEATED: David Helms, Andy Anderson, Roger Beasley, Billy Doss, Edward Hopkins. Yearbook Staff Works Hard To Do Stuart Proud As Final Edition Is Published Though the 1970 JEB Staff was handicapped by a lack of experience, the dedication of the staff proved them equal to their task. An outsider could never imagine the time and effort that went into the prepa¬ ration of a yearbook that would Do Stuart Proud. The constant standards of excellence that the JEB has always upheld can stand as an example for the future classes of the consolidated high school to follow in preparing their publications. The final edition of the JEB was put together under the guidance of the yearbook advisors, Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Tatum. 61 FIRST ROW: Debra Tatum, Linda Ayers, Janet Hatcher, Dana Epps, Catherine Martin, Rebecca East.
