Presented By The Jeb Staff Stuart High School Stuart, Virginia THE 1966 JEB Bill Alexander, Editor Patricia Belton, Business Manager Dedication Searching--for humility. Seeking—charac¬ ter. We found a teacher who possesses a pleas¬ ing combination of all the fine qualities that make a person outstanding. Her personal integrity and broad vision have been a source of guidance and inspiration. She has had faith in us when we had no faith in ourselves. She has encouraged us when we have become lax in spirit. Her wonder¬ ful knack of working well with young people will serve as a goal for us to seek to accomplish in future years. Her influence has been ever-pres¬ ent in both the academic and extra-curricular parts of our high school life. With these things in mind, we dedicate THE 1966 JEB to MRS. FOSTER STAPLES. Foreword Our days at Stuart School are numbered— both for those who sought and found and for those whose quest is yet unsatisfied. Cherished thoughts are many as we recall our enthusiasm for extracurricular activities, our rewards for work well done, and our goal of graduation. Each day brings another challenge, another trial, another attainment. Each year brings momentous changes in our lifes: our teachers, our school, our interests, our activities, our attitudes--all have changed. These memories and these changes are told in the words and seen in the pictures of this book. This year is certainly no exception. Students in both the elementary and second¬ ary grades receive instruction and guidance from men and women who have dedicated their lives to the education of tomorrows leaders. These de¬ voted teachers not only spend countless hours preparing their courses of instruction, but spend much time advising and giving help to students in their extra-curricular activities. Their influ¬ ence is clearly evident in every facet of school life. On behalf of the students of Stuart School, the Jeb Staff would like to thank the faculty and administrators for all that has been accomplished during this year. 14 Administration ■ ' ■- ' H-.i W£Z w V jk 55 } : 15 Mr. James Joyce, Jr. Principal High Point B.S. Careening down the halls at a breakneck pace the sub-freshmen had the school in hand in less than a week. The freshmen establish themselves as indis¬ pensable to the network at Stuart High, learn to ac¬ cept responsibilities and channel their interest after one year of high school. Since the sophomore is now a true member of high school, he enthusiastically participates in clubs and sports, and accepts many responsibilities now given him. Eagerly accepting their responsibilities, ju¬ niors contribute readily to any and all school ac¬ tivities. As the senior begins his last year he realizes that what has been most important to him is not how many hours have been spent, or how long he has worked, but what he has accomplished. . .44 I 22 High School 23 RONNIE STEPHEN ADAMS 4-H Club 5; FFA 1; Monogram Club 5; J.V. Through participation in these, a student gains social awareness, a sense of responsibility, knowledge and skill in possible vocational fields, lead¬ ership ability, and a sense of sportsmanship. The Beta Club stresses scholarship, leadership, achievement and service. The purpose of the Student Council is to govern the student body democratically, giving each student a chance to take an equal part in our government. The 4-H, FFA, and FHA bring rec¬ ognition to the school by participation in local, state, and national contests, and members of these gain practical knowledge which will be useful to them in their careers. The Monogram Club awards letters and stars to outstanding and deserving athletes. The Hi-Y endeavors to extend Christian character through¬ out the home, school, and community. The Library Club provides aid in the library, mending books, ar¬ ranging them on shelves, while they gain knowledge of library methods. The Latin Club increases under¬ standing and enjoyment of the Latin language and Ro¬ man culture. The Annual Staff works diligently all year to edit a yearbook of high quality. In the following pages, we will examine each of these organizations more closely. 46 Organizations 47 FIRST ROW: Mary Alice Byers, Rebecca East, Judy Clement, Donna Church, Brenda Belton, William Dickerson. Producing THE J EB absorbs many after-school hours, as well as study hall time, for each of the students on the staff if deadlines are to be met. Staff members have to meet qualifications which involve creative ability, cooperative personalities, and good grades, but of more importance, a genuine interest in the yearbook and of most im¬ portance, the desire and willingness to work. Membership on the staff is made up of stu¬ dents who have expressed a desire to work and have promised to give the necessary time to fulfill the responsibility of their assignment. 60 Students are happy and feel honored to play a part in summarizing through pic¬ tures and copy their year of life at Stuart High. Through attending the North Carolina Press Institute, at the University of North Carolina, reading periodicals, and attending staff conferences while assembling the year¬ book a student gains valuable training in areas of journalism such as photography, layout, design, writing, editing, topography, art, and advertising. As the years pass, a yearbook becomes more valuable and enjoyable when one looks back to see and read of the joys and mem¬ ories from his high school days. The encouragement to excel which is of¬ fered in the sports program often times is more inviting to the student than in other areas of school life. During the past two years, this program has been expanded to the extent that more students than ever before have an opportunity to participate in athletics here at S.H.S. Much of the credit for this expansion must go to Mr. Walker who is respon¬ sible for the track and golf teams of which we can now be so proud. The student body can be proud of the excellent coaching and winning teams found in the athletic department. And they can also be justly proud of the fine sportsmanship which has always been re¬ garded as important at Stuart High School. Clubs Provide Entertainment At Christmas Social The Christmas social was held at night this year in the school cafeteria. It was spon¬ sored by the S.C.A., and was planned well, with the able assistance of Mrs. Dickerson, S.C.A. advisor. The program consisted of a Christmas play, with all clubs taking part. The setting for the play was T.A. Weary ' s Novelty Shop window on Christmas Eve. After Mr. Weary had closed his shop for the night, the different toys in the window came to life, each adding their part to the play. The Lit¬ erary Development class put on a skit, Saint George and the Dragon. Two girl trios sang, and the French and Latin classes sang French and Latin Christmas carols. Bill Alexander contributed a humorous skit, The Tele¬ phone . Aftez’wards, the F.H.A. served re¬ freshments and a band composed of several students played for dancing. A beautiful Christmas tree was furnished and decorated by the F.F.A. The fifth annual Homecoming was held on Saturday, February the fifth. The night was begun by the homecoming game, with the Stuart Wildcats pitted against the Woolwine Warriors. The girls ' game came first, and although the Wildcats fought well, the attack of the Warriors was too much. The final score of the girls ' game was Woolwine 40, Stuart 27. The next tip-off found the Wool¬ wine boys engaged in a fierce struggle with the Wildcats. From the opening jump, it was the Wildcats all the way. Stuart played ex¬ cellent defense, and had a fine shooting night. With this combination, continuing through the game, supported by a strong bench, the Wild¬ cats got on top to stay, and at the horn the scoreboard showed the hot Wildcats 84, the Woolwine Warriors 37. The elementary grades, therefore, play a major part in a person ' s later life. Here in the first seven grades at Stuart School, children learn not only The three R ' s, but gain important practical knowledge needed for future years. From the first day the first grader enters Stuart School, he begins and continues to build toward that important goal-graduation. Dur¬ ing this time he develops, under the patient and able leadership of the elementary teachers, lasting friendships with fellow students, fine character traits, and learns to reason, to make decisions, and to set his own goals.
