I was met at the door by my roommate, Shirley Faye Stone, who was all excited. Look, she said, an invitation to the Inaugural Ball. You can imagine how surprised and happy we were that Bruce Moorefield, the elected President of 1964, had not forgotten his old class of ' 54. As we entered the Ball Room that night, just whom do you think were the first persons we saw? Kenneth Goard and Bobby Hall, whom President Moore¬ field had appointed Attorney General and Secretary of State, so he could tell them what to do for a change. As I turned around, I was whirled onto the dance floor by William Thomp¬ son whom I had not seen since my High School days. I was surprised to learn that he was now the Editor of the New York Times. As we were dancing we bumped into Betty Willard and Sidney Spahr. Sidney had just won the Grand Champion National Dairy Show. Betty who liked geometry so well in high school is now a geometry teacher. Just then a loud voice boomed out over the loud speaker, whom we rec¬ ognized as John Clark (Secretary of Agriculture) who was acting as Master of Cermonies. He announced that a special dance would be given by Betty Foley, who had just finished a musical comedy, TOO OLD TO KISS, with Donald O ' Conner. Following the dance a beautiful piano solo was given by Harold Hopkins, the famous concert pianist. Pushing my way toward the refreshment table I bumped into Fern Soyars. I learned from her that she had acquired the all time record in typing—300 words a minute. She told me that Marie was now the manager of the Elastic Plant, at Stuart, and was unable to attend because of her work. By this time it was getting late, so I began to look for Shirley Faye. I found her in the midst of a large group. They were praising her on her painting of the Stuart High School, which had been placed in the modern art section of the National Art Gallery. Dragging her away from her admirers, I got her started home. I told her about all the classmates that I had seen and then she began to tell me about one she had seen. Edna Williams has run Martha Carson out of business and has her own T. V. shows. Erlene Turner has overcome her shyness and is now quite a glamour girl. Darlyne Light, who is now Mrs. Dud Clark, is living a quiet life at Stuart, Virginia. PROPHECY (continued) Mrs. James Collins, the former Ruth Shockley, owns a tobacco farm near Stuart, and has become quite rich from her invention of the cigarette for the people that don ' t smoke. Elva and Thelma Gray are now star guards on the famous basketball team, The Girl Trotters. Rebecca Tatum has attained her highest goal--private secretary to the President. Dorothy Martin ' s latest book, How to Hold Two Men, has won her fame. The former Margaret Puckett is celebrating her 10th wedding anniversary and now has ten ears of Corns. Mary Margaret Spence has finished Berea College and is working as a secretary. Margaret Hopkins is now head nurse at Stuart Hospital. Shirley Willard is an airplane stewardess on the new super jet and makes a daily flight from New York to Paris. Betty Jean Williams and Mary Ruth Smith own the famous Glamour Shoppe in Hollywood. Betty Jean designs clothes for the movie stars and Mary is the leading hairdresser. Vera Williams is still single because she has so many boy friends, she can ' t decide which one to marry. Carolyn Ray is now head of the Red Cross Division in Winston Salem, N.C. Allie Mae Rogers and Nancy Gunter are now co-owners of the Stork Club in New York. Annie Ruth Creasey is their bookkeeper. After Shirley Faye and I had gotten home that night, we thought over all that had happened to our classmates and we realized that we had graduated from a very famous class. BETTY WILLARD and WILLIAM THOMPSON Snapshots CLASS HISTORY As we, the seniors of ' 54, Get ready to leave Stuart High We wish to leave our history Of the twelve years that have rolled by. As we began our first year of learning With Misses Kitty Taylor and Roberson as our guides. We learned our ABC ' s, numbers, And many things with pride. The Second grade we entered with great joy, Still small girls and boys we were. Very polite students we became, For we learned to say yes-mam and yes-sir. We entered the Third grade with some difficulty, Right hard we all thought it was, But to get by we were right lucky, Because the teachers liked us so much. The Fourth grade we all liked well. Because there was no one that failed, Although examinations were right hard, We made our step forward. The Fifth grade seemed a little different Because we found some new friends left for us there. We all certainly did appreciate them. And our interests with them we did share. A little difficult were the Sixth and Seventh, But we all seemed to succeed, We went to the Eighth Seeming to be pleased. In the Eighth the changing of classes gave us some trouble, And in the Ninth the troubles begin to double. Spite was always thrown at us, Because all the teachers did was fuss. The Tenth gave us a new teacher. Miss Mitchell, And new pupils, Shirley Faye and Carolyn, Much knowledge we gained in biology that year, And two boys left us to go to Critz and Blue Ridge. In the Eleventh Sidney joined us. This year we enjoyed much, A wonderful teacher and the banquet we all did prepare. For the seniors and faculty to share. Many new adventures we have had in the Twelfth, We hope a good name we have left. Mrs. Hazelwood has been so nice to us, And Mr. Wfitkins has been a great help. So we leave our best wishes for all who remain. And hope we all can meet again. For all these years have been so great, Its more than we can appreciate.
