615565 The mf st outstandlng prmclpal to my mmd was Mrs Jeb Stuart It was a common school Joke that she ran the school just as Jeb Stuart had run the army even 1ns1st1ng on umforms to counteract the growing love of dress To every m1s demeanor she used to say Young ladies It has never been our custom Feelmg that an extensxve correspondence was objectxonable particularly wlth the gentlemen she asked our parents for a 11st o We were allowed to wrlte only three letters a week and one was to m11y A11 our mall passed through Mrs Stuarts hands As a matter of ere not even allowed to see young gentlemen unless they had a letter and sometimes not even then f Mr Stuart rlrdn t approve the front door was always stolen a custom that has persxsted even s Some of our rules may one especlally Each young lady IS requxred to occup all our rules were taken as llghtly as that one was ur w sat on three legged stools For supper we ate or 1am or even rel sh as a speczal treat In order ln front of our mirrors h mstalled vamty worn thm by our con tmual prxmpmg Q 1 Wxth the turn Mlss Duval M1ssDuval s changed from the Vlrglnxa Our parents had been they had been sendmg thelr almost daxly marked day'J was confident Mlss Duval were artnstxcally decorated tnme that many new plnk sofa especxally through the years I am sure purposes' In 1910 Whittle Bulldmg Cmcluclmg and lrbraryj and Bishops Way were bu1lt The school s face was mdeed greatly changed MISS Duval s admxmstratxnn marked the transntxon from the old fashloned era to the modern We were all caught ln the crazy fads of the tlmes the pennants the chafing dlshes the mandcl n and guxtar duets the brcycle and the pompadour In the hectnc years of the Frrst World War Mlss Howard who had been a very popular teacher under Mlss Duval was our prxnclpal She was followed ln 1918 by Mrs Hrlls who :hd much to ralse the standards of the school Robertson House and Cochran House old houses adjacent to Stuart Hall were added to the school for use as dormltorles Mrs Hllls rn turn was followed by Mlss Carr under whose able guidance the chool rounded out 1ts first century In nmeteen forty three Mrs W1ll1am T Hodges came to us brlng ng w1th her new plans for Stuart Halls second hundred years L . . .
