A person in individual events is entirely on his ownf, The individual speaker may enter one of several categories: oratorieal. dramatic. or humorous decla- niation: original oratory, or extemporaneous speak- ing. ln all these events. Struthers was well-represented. Most novice speakers entered oratorical declamation to gain more speaking experience: however. the older speakers joined the other. more difficult cate- gories. :X series of practice tournaments was held during the early months of the year.
