HAROLD BOOHER Behind every efficient, smooth working organization there has to he a directing power. Struthers High is no exception. ln order for your school to function properly 1t, too. needs a guiding hand. an organization to keep its vital affairs in good order. This important need is met hy the Struthers Board of Education. It may not seem immediately apparent to you, the student. just how important the school hoard is. However, without it school as you know it would not he possihle. When needs hcyond the power of your administration or faculty arise they hecome the responsihility of the hoard. It then decides on a course of action and takes the neces- sary steps to accomplish it. This group. composed of civic minded Struthers citizens elected hy the voters. is truly responsihle for the well heing of your school. 'lihey are the steady guiding hand which leads you on the path to a hetter education. School life is like a ladder which every student must clirnh. Each class is a rung on this ladder. Wlieri, as eighth graders, you started here at Struth- ers, you found yourselves at the lrase of this ladder pre- paring to make that long clinih. But each step had to he taken carefully and with perseverance. Each step hrought you nearer the top, hut the higher you went the harder you had to work. Along the way you learned much. ln addition, each succeeding class lelt you some experience or knowledge it had gained. During your climlm you, too7 have gained a great deal which will he your ladder to a lretter life when you are graduated. The education you receive here is the support upon which your whole later life rests. You will always rememlmer that climlr as the lmesl years of your life. ca, I4 W0 251 f 1 sq' WCQQW 5 Lv VM I .lohn McComish, presidentg Randy Defendiefer, vice presirlentg Donna Rearick, treasurer: Kathy Semonza, secretary. Seated: Mr. George Kerleck, sponsor. You, the members of the sophomore class. early this year discovered a secret of vast im- portance. All this year you carefully guarded this valuable secret. However, somehow it leaked out and now everyone knows the secret for suc- cess. What is the sec1'et?Shard workg that is the formula for success. You sophomores certainly made use of this formula for winning friends, fame, and fortune. Working very hard on every job before you. Soon, even to your own amazement, you saw how easy it is to accomplish your objectives when you work with a willingness to co-operate and to get the job done. So. at the end of this year. you sophomores can look back and say with pride, one more job well done by the class of 1960? 20 After one year of background. you the fresh- man class faced your first year of high school. Realizing that there was much to be gained dura ing your four years here at Struthers you set your goals high. Following the examples of per- severance and hard work set by previous classes, you strived to reach these goals. Under the leadership of the new class officers and spon- sor you got off to a good start working very hard to make your activities for this year a success. The desire to do a good job which you have shown this year will be a great blessing to in the future. Not least among these was the need of funds to help you in your sponsorship of the annual Junior-Senior Prom, the highlight of your year. Starting off early last summer, you worked with a will and put out the biggest and best football program ever at Struthers. Then you worked with the determination necessary for success selling them at the game. The end result is one of which to be proud. Also, you led the school, in a Hpride in Our School Campaign which included daily devotions. Your list of achievements will serve as a precedent for many years to come. True, you were not all able to par- ticipate in the game, but you were able to partivipate in the cheering. pep assemblies, and after-the-game dances. Struthers is proud of you, the athletic squads, and doubly proud of you, its fans. You admirably sup- ported the squads, football, basketball, baseball, and track, as well as the many individual sports. Your en- couragement has helped Struthers to become a Mschool of championsf, A championship team is not always de- termined in the win eolumnsgit must be champions in defeat as Well as in victory, and must keep a fighting spirit even when things look dark. A great asset to you was our winning football team. After the Rayen game. rememlier how you sponsored the first reeord hop of the year? The Kickoff tl1at's what you called it. And A'Tlie Kickoff it was. The record hop was so successful that it has set a preeedent for all other classes to follow. Then. you had a series of ear washes throughout the year. You may have come home a little wet, but you made quite a profit on them. You sold screwdrivers during the Christmas holidays. As seniors you did so many other things. The Ice Follies trip to Cleveland, the Senior Banquet in May. You the senior class have worked together well. You have had many varied and successful projects. The willingness to work and the cooperation that you the Class of 1958 have shown will always be an example for all classes to follow. THEODORE A. METZLER This year the top spot in class ranking goes to Theodore Metzler. Ted, having taken the college entrance course, led the senior class of 1958 with a 3.91 average to take the Valedictorian position. Behind him he leaves a long list of achievements worthy of four years of high school well spent. His scholastic attainments include three times representing Struthers in the Mount Union Tests and receiving the Bausch S Lomb Science Award. He also has been four times winner of the American Legion Essay Con- test. His crowning achievements in scholarship are ranking in the upper five per cent of the state in the Ohio State Scholar- ship Test for Seniors and also becoming one of the few Struthers students to receive relognition on the National Merit Scholarship Test. In addition Ted is active in speech. Besides being president of the National Forensic League, in which he holds the degrees of Distinction. he has made a fine record in speech competition. Active in both debate and individual speaking events, he won the state championship in extemporaneous speaking last year. In the Prince of Peace Contest he has also been a district winner twice. Aside from these many activities, Ted is a hard-working member of many school clubs. He is vice president of the Ductorian HisY and a member of the Engineers' Club. Ted plans to attend Denison University where he will major in history and philosophy. I I I The position of Salutatorian for the senior class of 1958 goes to David Williartis. Dave, also a college entrance student, took the second ranking position with a 3.31 average. Dave, too, is very active and like Ted ranks high in scholastic attainment. Among his scholastic achievements are receiving thc Bausch Sz Lomb Science Award and representing Struthers in the Mount Union Scholarship Tests. In ninth grade. he took General Scienceg tenth, Latin Ilg and in eleventh, Chemistry. Placing in the upper five per cent of the state in the Ohio General Scholar- ship Test for Seniors ranks highest of his achievements. Besides his scholastic activities, Dave enjoys membership in many school organizations. Foremost of these is the National Honor Society in which he is vice president. He is also secretary- treasurer of the Ductorians Hi-Y and a member of the stage crew and Engineers' Club. Dave plans to attend M.I.T. where he will study to become a nuclear physicist. DAVID A. You were a part of the crowd that was standing outside Struthers High School. Finally, the doors opened and you were swept into the activity of the freshman year. Your class officers for that year were Benny Bruno, presidentg Nick Gentile, vice presidentg Eleanore Liptak, secretary: and Janet Heckert, treasurer. Mr. Robert Hauge was a very cooperative sponsor. Re- member that first skating party at Kelly's in Columbiana, Ohio. Next came a class dance and then a school dance called the Hobo Hop. The hop was held at Sexton Street gym and Billy Farrell, a top recording star. made a special guest appearance. Who will forget escaping from study hall to wash walls as a part of the Clt-an+Up campaign? The month was again Septemberg but the year. 1955. This year you were better acquainted with the other members of your class and with S.H.S. The new class officers were Dave 'Wil1iams, presidentg Tom Eckman, vice president: Tom Mclntire, secretary: and Don Sicafuse, treasurerg with Mr. Gene Janecko as sponsor. Everyone had a fun-filled time at the Halloween party. which featured such funny and clever costumes, including that of a mummy. Another skating party and a post-basketball game dance rounded out the memorable activities of your sophomore year. September, 1956, marked the beginning of your all important junior year. When class president Carol Keiffer moved to another school, Angela Augustine was elected to the office. Benny Bruno was vice presidentg Rachel Heldman. secretary: and Pat Evans, treasurer. Hrs. Perhaps you were one wash, or covered with itchy angel-hair while decorating for The month was September and the year was 1957. At last. the final and most important year began. Angela Augustine, again elected president, was assisted by Bill Higgins, vice presidentg Pat Maloney, secretary: and Pat Evans, treasurer. The sponsors were Mrs. Mary DeGenova and Mr. Arleigh Westerbeck. Always to be remembered highlights were the New Yearis party at the Old Barn. the trip to the Ice Follies, the Junior-Senior Prom. Remember the senior picnic, senior banquet. and Baccalaureate? What were your thoughts as you cheered at the last pep assembly? As you looked up at the student body at the Senior Assembly, did it bring back some of these wonderful memories you had as an underclassman? The day was June 2 and the year 1958. You marched slowly and nostalgically from the commencement service along with dear and long-to-be-remembered friends., and that September morning in 1954 suddenly seemed like yesterday. 11 K 's 'W .9 JOE AGRESTA-NORMA EICHSTADT KEN HORVAT-JO ANN DONATELLI HAROLD DURKIN f , , 71604: Fopalaa BARB UMBEL-BEN BRUNO 2641 Uuued PAT EVANS-FRANK BARONE PAUL COBEL-JO POMA , ,iz ,gg .
