r l1 '1 Struthers Quznts Slow After the 1948 49 basketball season Struthers entered the Northeast ern Ohio Sectional Tournament with a ve rx poor record Losing the flrst eight games of the regular season and endmg the season wnth sxx wms and twelve losses Struthers opened the tournament wlth a bye Thev then beat Fitch and Wllson m successlon Then came the blg game wlth Canton South Canton was plcked as the number one seeded team mn the tourney Struthers came out on top with a resounding 40 32 victory Garfield Helghts Cleveland s undefeated qulntet came next Cleveland Cvarfmeld had won ZZ games wtthout a loss Wxth seconds of the game left Struthers found them selves ahead and after the fmal seconds had tlcked awax Struthers had won another Struthers had broken a strmg of ZZ games of vlctory The Wmldcats then met Nlles who had also swept thelr way to the top The cats just didn t seem to have the punch ln th1s game and met defeat Repeat Performance That was last season Thls season may be the same or It mav be dlf ferent The boys haven t been too successful thls season but what remains IS uncertaln They lost the first game to Llsbon and then beat 'Sebrmg and Loulsvllle Then they lost tough ones to Ursullne and Lowellvxlle but beat Chaney ln a slow Z9 Z8 vlctory Bad luck took over and Struthe rs lost seven 1n a row They then beat East Palestlne and handed Hubbard nts flftx first defeat m a row Tourney Left to Battle At mld year graduatlon the Cats lost such waluable men as Bob Raxbuck Bxl1Symbol1c and Uxck Creed But wmth ball handlers luke Bob Dmckun the Wxldcat s scrappy l1ttle captaxn Bob Loncar jlm Umbel Sam Slskowlc Bxll Murphy and Patsy Agresta there should be no doubt ln our minds about the remainder of the season As Coach Heldman saxs An unsuccessful season brmgs a prosperous tournament 83 1 .iid I CN qu . . , 'Al ,475 W V' .-? -.. , 4' c : .- .
