H1L1tes of 49 Football Season At the beginning of the 1949 grid season Head Coach Howard Heldman found that he had a fine array of lettermen on hand when he began to groom the Wildcats for the 1949 Season They included Steve Balogh center Mike Basista defensue fullback Dick Creed, Boston Wilson Don Massaro ends john Marasoxich guard Ray Swansiger who was converted from tackle to fullback It was Swanslger who provided the punch to the Wildcats attack during the earlx part of the season As the team rounded into an efficient offensive machine speedx backs like Pat Naples Bill Hoffman Don Allshouse and Ray Schwab began to come into their own With this speedy array of backs bolstered by Symbolic at quarterback Heldman had a backfield second to none in the district They opened their season by handing Lowellville its initial setback of the 49 season 33 0 Then after slip 58 7 victory to avenge last year s lone defeat at the hands of the Indians After de feating Girard the Wildcats walked over Hubbard 63 7 and then met a spirited and rugged Woodrow Wilson eleven After a tough game Struthers pulled out on top Z4 12 Salem Snaps Streak An aggressive and alert Salem High Team although twice beaten was fired up for their tilt with the Wildcats When the smoke of the battle had cleared Salem had done the unbelievable by a Z1 13 count but not before the two teams had staged one of the finest high school games seen in the valley this year Salem alone has been able to maintain an edge on the Wildcats in the past three years having won two and tied one Then Ravenna A stubborn Ravenna team whose only loss this year has been to Salem knocked the Wildcats down another rung on the ladder by topping the Red and Black 7 6 in a thrilling ball game at Ravenna And Then Campbell After losing a heartbreaker to Ravenna the Wildcats bounced back and trounc ed a stubborn Niles combination 34 18 Then came the game of the year The day was November 11 The weather was good The game began and a game it was Struthe rs left the field a 7 0 favorite And at the end of the game the Wildcats came out on top 14 0 So close the gridiron careers of fifteen Seniors and closes the 49 football sea son at Struthers. Another football squad has passed through the doors of Struthers High for their last time leaving behind them a spirit well appreciated. 78 0 O , W I ping past Rayen 7-6 they hit their peak in the Girard game, scoring a lopsided
