K? Mrs. Margaret Smith, who leaves the Stroud Union High English department after many years of service, shares with Mr. Curtis the honor of being one of two instructors on the present high school staff who taught in the old build- ing on the hill before it burned in 1927, both having begun their work in our schools in 1925 .' Leaving Stroudsburg in 1927, she taught for a period of time in the Roxborough High School in Philadelphia before returning to Stroudsburg and the Stroud Union High School staff in 1949. As Mrs. Smith leaves, she can look with pride over the years. Few indeed are they who have so rare a talent to bring our English literature and language alive. Many indeed are the students whose lives will be richer because under her direction they have learned to weigh and judge and hence to know what is good in the written word Godspeed to you, Mrs. Smith. We are thankful for having had the opportunity to study under you. 132 Cap Curtis retires this year. Those presently in school could not have the pleasure of knowing him when he was one of the outstanding coaches in the Lehigh Valley League -- feared for his uncanny insight that ferreted out op- ponents' weaknesses, respected for the high plane on which he carried ath- letics and athletes. Those presently in school could not know the Cap Curtis of the days of the 'thirties, depression days, when hunger and want haunted more homes than we cared to admit. No one knows how many students Cap assisted in those days .No one will ever know. Such things don't become public knowledge. But those who were helped will not forget . . . As Cap looks back over his years in this school he has memories, many memories, vibrant with the excitement of competition, rich in the currency of kindness -- memories that bring back visions and echoes of gyms packed to the walls with frenzied, shouting fansg memories that revive voices and faces of grateful young people. Good luck to you, Cap! May the years ahead be many, and may they be full to overflowing with health and the pleasures in life you so much deserve. 133 To the Class of '66, Alfred W. Munson was THE PRINCIPAL, the ranking oc- cupant of THE OFFICE, a figure of authority in ASSEMBLY, an absorbed reader in THE LIBRARY. But to the individual student he was a friendly man who gave sympathetic advice, impartial judgment, and stimulation to high endeavor. They did not know him as a classroom teacher, but when he played that role, he was a lively part of student activities. The senior plays he directed were a delight. Details of scenery, costume, make-up were as important as the effective delivery of lines. There was a time when Class Night was an in- dispensable part of graduation week. This night found him deep in plans with the seniors, writing skits, rehearsing, producing, even on occasion playing the clown himself. At the same time his classroom teaching was of a quality to make students and their parents regret his elevation to the position of principal. It was in response to popular plea, as well as in gratification of his own inclination, that he continued to teach one English class a year, even after he assumed the administration of the high school. Only the explosion of the school population eventually forced his abandonment of this activity. Now his association with students became less frequent, but teachers were aware of his continued involvement with student interests. He wished to hold each to his highest capability, to make the utmost allowance for unimpressive results of honest effort, to provide a chance to excel for those whose ability lay in non- academic pursuits. He kept the school aware of its debt to tradition, yet alert to the dangers of slavish devotion to the status quo. Teachers knew, too, his self-deprecation -- his assumption, for instance, that the occasional snarls in the schedule on opening day were his unique contribution, while with a quiet expression of appreciation he credited others with the frequent smoothness of those first days in September. It is no wonder that as Alfred W. Munson once more steps to the front of his classroom, now at college level, he takes with him the affectionate regard of the many high school students and teachers whose lives he has enriched. 134 Alfred W.
