Mr. Costello lends an ear to a concerned parent. Mr. Costello is caught sneaking through the halls. During Mr. Costello’s time at Strong Vincent (1966-1984), he was in- volved in coaching the football team along with his social studies teach- ings. Since 1986 his guidance and counseling has helped seniors and underclass students on their quest to the real world. Because of his love for history, he belongs to the National Council for Social Studies. Along with his membership to that organi- zation, he participates in Education- al Associations. Mr. Costello’s pastime is taken up by his dogs and his love for the outdoors including fishing and hunting. Our dedication recipient got his start at Cathedral Preparatory School. Mr. Costello then moved up to Gannon University to receive his Bache- lor’s in 1952. Then on he went to further his studies at Allegheny College, receiving his Master’s. Immediately after he began teaching at Jefferson Elementary. Mr. Costello transferred to Wilson Junior High School to teach his favorite subject, history. Mr. Costello made it to Strong Vincent High School in 1966, continuing to teach social studies. But Mr. Costello left us to go to Gridley Junior High School for two years before coming back to us in 1986. 7 Mr. DeMichael pretending to work. Mrs. Sebald reviews the parts of speech with 10th graders. Mr. Cole, “What do you want with me?” Mr. Gauriloff explains to his class the law of gravity. Our faculty appears to be one big happy family. ■ — ■ Faculty- Mrs. McPherson seems hap- py teaching her English class. . - - of Intelligence — Mrs. Mastrian and Miss Williams: Faithful chemistry teachers. Mr. Minzenberger and ... Joe Paterno? Mr. Behan is caught in the act. The 1987-88 Strong Vincent faculty is cer- tainly made up of a rainbow of characters. There’s the never smiling Mr. Vickey to the forever smiling Mr. Case. No matter if they- ’re stern or a jokester, they care about what they’re doing. That’s one thing we never think about, that these teachers don’t teach us because they have to, they want to. They care whether or not we learn and go on to make something of ourselves, that’s why they push us just a little harder. One particular teacher that gave that extra little push to make the students care was Mr. Minzenber- ger. We wish him luck in his new job and we will all miss him alot. We thank the faculty for the superb job that they’ve done this year and we thank you for caring enough to teach us. Give yourself a pat on the back for putting up with us! ■ I ■ I ■ I ■ ■ ■ I ■ ■ I ■ I Mr. Cole is thumbs up about his students. Principal Fiorelli Mr. Fiorelli takes a moment from his busy schedule to talk to yearbook staff members. Once again we look forward to a successful year under the leader- ship of Mr. Raymond Fiorelli. Since he came here Mr. Fiorelli has worked to improve the quality of the education we receive here at Strong Vincent. Through his efforts we have seen a renew- ed pride within our school and a greater respect from people in the community. A principal is expected to give a great deal of time to his school. Mr. Fiorelli has surpassed this expectation and has devoted most of his time in dedicated service to the students and teachers of this school. Thank you Mr. Fiorelli for your firm com- mitment and belief in Strong Vincent. Behind every great principal is a great sec- retary. 10 Assistant Principals Assistant Principal Joyce Savocchio is an individual ded- icated to community service. She served as a school teacher here before becoming assistant principal, and she also is a city-councilwoman for Erie. A true Colonel, Miss Savocchio graduated in 1961 from Strong Vincent. Her Bachelor’s degree was obtained from Mercyhurst Col- lege, and her Master’s Degree was earned at the Univer- sity of Pittsburgh. Miss Savocchio, despite Jier hectic schedule, still remains accessible to students. Assistant Principal Joseph Gdaniec sets a fine example for students with his impressive aca- demic credentials. Mr. Gdaniec will not crack a smile for our photographer. He graduated from Gannon University with a B.A. in mathematics. And, then continued his education at the University of Pittsburgh where he received a Masters Degree in Secondary Education. For graduate work he attended the State University of New York at Fredonia and Edinboro. Students and Faculty agree that he is a fine, helpful individual. 11 m Mrs. Altadonna: Eng.; Reading; Soc. Mr. Grotkowski says, “Come chill in the freezer with me and The Ice Cubes.” The 1987-88 school year was definitely active at Strong Vin- cent. The wide range of activities went from the first place High-Q team, to the Colonel’s football team. Many activities met with great success, such as the always popular Homecom- ing dance, which was once again the most exciting event. Con- gratulations are in order to all students and faculty members who helped make it an exciting year! 18 in Action I 19 Dancin’ to the Cara Reisenweber and Dawn Smith wonder what hap- Wendy Lobaugh says, “Hey, what are you laughing at?” pened to their computers. Dave and Ina enjoy a romantic evening. In honor of the Colonel’s football victory over Sharpsville, the 1987 Homecoming Dance was an overwhelming success. Homecoming took place on October 9, from 7:30 to midnight, but the party spir- it lingered on into the night at private parties around the city. This year’s Homecoming committee decided to rent the grand floor of the Warner Theater — not only for its elegant, Victorian charm, but also to keep ticket costs down. Funds from last year’s Student Council trea- sury were used for the multicolored de- corations, and to bring in d.j. Mike Reno to liven things up. Dress ranged any- where from semi-formal to prom-formal, but everyone seemed eager to “kick off the high-heels” and have a good time. 27 A view of romance. This year, under the leadership of advisor Mr. Mullen and president Jen Kraut, the council sponsored successful Homecoming and Christmas dances at the atmo- spheric Warner Theatre. The council also ran the half-time ceremonies at the Homecoming game, and, with the help of the Business Club, bought the tree and decorations that brightened the front hall before Christmas. Student Council is also impor- tant as a communication link be- tween students and administra- tors. 93 Amy Brookhauser, Michele Skarupski, Cathy Villela. Jennifer Kraut. A fund raiser was held in which Mr. Rutkowski, the team coach, sold “Mighty Fine” doughnuts to hungry students. The money raised was used to purchase team bowling shirts, each personal- ized, but unfortunately unliked by the team members. An end-of-the-year banquet was in the process of being planned. It included several pizzas and Pepsi contributed by Mr. Rutkowski. He hopes to have better turn-outs for try outs, and a better attitude towards the team uniforms. Darrin’s death shocked and saddened all who knew him. When someone so young and full of life dies suddenly, it’s difficult for family and friends to accept. The process takes a long time, but confusing feel- ings of anger and sorrow eventually lead to fond memories of the life he touched us with. Darrin enjoyed the things most young American men do — cars, sports, music ... But Darrin was also an ambitious planner, always working diligently to follow through with any project he undertook. Probably Darrin’s most dominant characteristic was his sense of humor. He had the ability to see the funny side of any bad situation. He enjoyed making people smile and often did the craziest things for a laugh. We like to believe that a better life begins elsewhere when someone passes on. We can rest assured that wherever Darrin may be now, he’s making others as happy as he made us here on earth. (Kristen Hersperger-Knost, a close friend) a word of explanation ... You may be wondering why the Spokesman staff chose “Operation S. V.” as the ’88 yearbook theme. Well, actually, we thought it was kind of funny — ours is probably the only yearbook in the world that even vaguely resembles a file in an undercover dossier. Seriously, though, “Operation S.V.” does mean something. Although high school sometimes seems pointless, there is a definite plan set in motion when we first walk S.V.’s halls as freshmen, we’re calling this an “operation.” The basic objective is to graduate. But graduating from high school means we’ve accomplished a lot more than just getting a diploma. It means we have: achieved in athletics, been on time every morning, explored and established a personal identity, remembered lunch money, got along with teachers, successfully flirted with prospective girl- friends boyfriends, thought about what to do with the rest of our lives, put down other classes in pep rallies, found good friends, hoped the basketball team would beat Prep, and kept our lockers reasonably clean. This is what “Operation S.V.” means. 157 Patron List Ace Auctioneers; Mark Tanenbaum, Auctioneer Alliance Home of Erie (P.N.A.) Club Drs.
