Underneath an azure sky. To fly, to soar, tempt death on the wing. Is something for which I strive. To make me feel, to make me know. That I were truly alive. 4 Contrary though, to what I wish, I will only fly in my dreams; But flight is a relative term. Interpretation is all that I need. 5 Mr. Gauriloff Receives '87 Yearbook Dedication S. V. Athletics have been a lifetime love for Mr. Q. The 1987 Spokesman is proud to announce its dedi- cation to 22 year veteran, Mr. David Gauriloff. Mr. Gau- riloff obtained his degree from Alliance College in 1950. He then became Assistant Principal of the Erie Day School from 1950-1963. In 1964 he began teach- ing for the Erie School District and has been doing so ever since. His specialties are Consumer and General Math, where Freshmen always feel welcome. Mr. Gauriloff is a friend to Strong Vincent in many ways. Besides teaching, David Gauriloff has coached football, baseball, and tennis. He is also the present Athletic Director. Mr. Gauriloff is an avid sports sup- porter, attending many athletic events. David Gauriloff has received plenty of support from his wife Martha and their three sons: David, Larry, and Ric. He enjoys fishing, traveling, and spending time with his grandchildren: Tim, Anna, Megan, and Buck. When Mr. Gauriloff retires, his plans include plenty of fishing and traveling excursions, including a trip to Alaska this summer. The Spokesman Staff feels they have not only chosen a dedicated teacher, but a tremendously talented and helpful individual as well. We wish David Gauriloff happiness and the best of luck in everything he does. Mr. Gauriloff shows his mastery at advanced mathe- matics. Mr. G. shows the hard work that comes with 25 years of dedication. 7 Mr. Larry Behan, You mean I won again?'' yThe 1986-87 Strong Vincent faculty has j once again played a major role in the ed- ucational development of our student body. The students here at S.V. should be very proud to have such an excellent | teaching staff. All of our school's faculty, from the flashy, practical jokester Mr. ' Case to the ever - intellectual Mrs. Mac- phearson, should be commended for | both their patience and excellent teach- ing qualities which are essential for a smooth running curriculum. This year's student body would like to thank our | school's entire teaching staff for all they have done throughout the year. Plotting Mr. John Behan, You mean I lost again? Mr. Cole is devoted to his students. 8 Our Course Mr. Case goes wild with Halloween spirit. Mrs. Benson is busy at her work. 9 Principal Fiorelli Mr. Fiorelli captivates his audience. The 1986 Spokesman is again proud to have the dedicated Mr. Raymond Fiorelli as our principal. Me is always striving to make Strong Vincent the best high school it can be. Many long hours of work has never de- terred him from doing his job. Though a graduate from Cathedral Prep, Mr. Fiorelli's heart and loyalty belong to Strong Vincent. Me admits, however, that a renewed pride at Vincent has made his job a little easier this past year. Students and faculty alike agree that they are fortunate to have a man like Raymond Fiorelli working for them. Mr. Fiorelli shows Franco Harris around S. V. Assistant In recent years, Joyce Savocchio has seen a change in our school's attitude. Strong Vin- cent student body has definitely showed a re- newed dedication to learning, leadership, and most of all to school pride. She comments: This school year is undoubtedly one of the finest in recent years.'' All of these important qualities mixed with our excellent faculty proves this to be true. Principals Vice Principal Qdaniec thinks that this year's stu- dent body is much more mature than those of re- cent years, and he is looking forward to having a bet- ter year. He stated, This year looks to be very suc- cessful because of the seriousness of our students, particularly the upperclassmen.'' Mr. Qdaniec also feels that there has been a spontaneous response to our school's activities as well as classwork, and the students seem to be adapting to their routines more quickly. Mr. Joseph Qdaniec has spent many years learning and developing his profession. Mr. Qdaniec first graduated from Gannon University with a B. A. in mathematics and from there went on to attend the University of Pittsburgh where he received a Mast- er's degree in Education in the secondary level. He also attended Edinboro and the State University of Hew York at Fredonia for Graduate work. All of these impressive credentials along with his friendly per- sonality are what make him such a professional. Miss Savocchio thinks Pete Sala is just, so cute. Although Miss Savocchio still misses teaching, she is very happy to be vice-principal of Strong Vincent. She enjoys herjob and likes the office atmosphere as well as helping students in many different ways. Miss Savocchio is a 1961 graduate of Strong Vincent. Her long line of credentials include a Bachelor's de- gree in History and Secondary Education from Mercy- hurst College, as well as a Master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh and a certificate in Secondary School Administration from Edinoboro University. 11 Mrs. Altadonna: LD; Eng; Reading: Soc. This year's custodial staff should be commended for the excellent work they did to keep our school clean. Each member of the staff has their own jobs, whether it is sweeping the hallways and cafeteria or just making general repairs on our school, they do it better than anyone. Thanks again to our custodial staff, we re proud of you all and hope that in the future you will continue to do a superb job in keeping our school clean. 16 Connie Damore, smile for the cam era. While some students consider business classes serious, others find them fun. What kind of joke are these boys cooking up? The 1986-87 school year was yet another banner year for activities here at Strong Vincent. The band, cheerleaders, and student body played a big part in the formation and all-around success of this year's activities. From pep rallies and assemblies to the games at the Hammermill Center, the students have shown their awesome exuberance and enthusiasm. Once again the year's biggest activity was the Homecoming game and dance. All of this year's students contributed to this event to make it the biggest and best Homecom- ing dance in the school's history. Congratulations to all of this year's student body for making this year a memorable one for school activities. 18 Flight The Great Vincent Poster Contest winner: Chris Krupinski. This is not the case here at Strong Vin- cent. The students take an active part in every facet of school life and that includes clubs. From the Student Council to the Ski Club, students enjoy a wide variety of scholastic and intramural activities. If there is any one thing that reflects the pride and spirit we have in our school, it is our clubs and organizations. Each year the Spokesman Staff is responsible for putting together a yearbook that is both enjoyable and full of great memories. Once again this year was no exception. The yearbook staff is made up of the advisor, Jessica Musana; editor, Ken Clausen; assistant editor, Charleen Aydt; copy editor, Mick Mong and various other students who work exceptionally well together. Each individual student specializes in a certain occu- pation; copy-writing, layouts, typing and artwork. Although each student is usually assigned to a certain job, everyone gets a chance to express their feelings and ideas by working on different assignments. This year's Spokesman Staff hopes that the 1986-87 yearbook will remind its students of the great times they shared; and that it will bring back many fond memories of yet another fine year at Strong Vincent. 94 Launches School Memories The Spokesman gives nick, Heidi, Pete, Charleen and Stacy something to smile about. The task of this representative is to take yearbook orders and to turn them in to Mr. Minzenberger. The yearbook representative is also in charge of taking orders for carnations during the annual sale held every Febru- ary. Finally we'd all like to thank this year's group of yearbook representatives for their participation in making the 1986-87 Spokesman a major success. Morning Yearbook Every year a few selected students, chosen by director Carl Minzenberger, take part in a class called Morning Yearbook. The three people involved in this special class are in charge of putting together yearbook orders and making the yearbook deliveries in May. The class orga- nized a very successful candy sale that helped to lower the cost of this year's SPOKESMAn. The 1986 Boy's Track and Field team per- formed very well considering the limited number of athletes. Still, they were unable to gain a victory despite hard effort. This year's Girl's Track Sf Field Team gave considerable effort, but ended the season without a victory. In order to compete on an equal level with other metro teams, more athletes are need- ed to participate. Headed by Jim Delsandro and assistant coaches, Phil Ander- son, Joe Kleiner, Pete Prokocki, and John Vogel, the team was well-drilled and always tried to the best of its ability. Leading the Girl's Track Team during the '86 season were Tre- lane Battles, Sandra Martin, Amy Brookhouser, Crystal Turner, and Kelly Amsden. Under Coach Ron Miebauer's belt are four metro championships, numerous city titles, and a team with a reputation that spreads across the state; other softball teams waiting to be included on the long, grueling pre-season schedule. Coach Miebauer sites positive attitudes, dedication, and daily, hard practices as means to his success. The lady colonels proved themselves on the field again last year and show promise for this year as well. With only two Seniors, MVP, Lisa Rocco and Most Dedicated, Lisa Montie as leaders, the girls displayed a 7-7 1986 record, successfully capturing the City Title. Miss Flanagan comments: The girls did a great job this year. They played very well together as a team and dedi- cated much of their time and energy to win their second straight city cup in many years. The team was led by Bonnie Walker, Therese Marmino, and Sue Kinear who managed to make the District 10 playoffs. The team's lone victory was a 2-0 shutout over a tough Mercyhurst Prep squad. Except for seniors Gary Zum and Pat Kiaddi, most of the team will be returning to play next year, Mr. Plinn coached most of the year with the exception of one game, in which Mr. Fiorelli took command. Because of the lack of players, the girls had to work extra hard. With the help of their coach, Mr. Jim Delsandro, the girls worked very hard and always gave their best throughout the season. They are, however, not the only students to do this. They are a small number of students who do their scholastic best. So, to these students and to all at Strong Vincent who worked diligently and received superior grades: CONGRATULATIONS!!! Melissa Mather, Bob Serafine To: The Graduating Class Of 1987 Fellow Seniors, Weil, this is it: The last year of High School — No more getting up for school; no more classes; no more closed'' lunches. Now we can look forward to college or full time jobs. These are the good points of graduating. Now, what about the bad points? Well, for starters, there's a good chance we won't see many of our classmates again. Old friendships will end, and new ones begin. Also no more football games, pep rallies, parties at the wall , stickin , school dances, or talent shows. Neither will there be special events such as the prom and that crazy presidential debate we had two years ago. Oh, sure, I know we can still go to the football games if we want to, but it won't be the same. The cops won't order us to sit down. I also know that we can still visit our alma mater anytime we want to and go to the parties anytime we want to and so forth; but, it won't be the same. Many people say that we better enjoy high school because these are the best years of our lives, and once they're gone we ll miss them. I believe this statement. 1 also believe that regardless of whatever happens, we ll still have our memories. And, after all, that's what this yearbook is all about: remembering. I hope you enjoy.
