In the course of this month, two important events took place which would, over the course of the years, affect the lives of many people, each one in its own way. The satellite “Sputnik” was launched previewing a technological age and Elizabeth MacKrell was assigned to Strong Vincent in the field of Biology. While the orbiting satellite was the forerunner of others that would affect millions of lives, Mrs. MacKrell, in her untiring efforts, would affect the lives of thousands of students who she came in contact with over the years. When not busily engaged in biological lectures and labs, she found time to chair variety shows, transport athletes, and anything else that was asked of her. After receiving further degrees, Mrs. MacKrell was assigned to the Federal Counseling Program, and left S.V. for 1 semester to implement the program at the Gridley Junior High School. She returned to Strong Vincent in the spring of 1967, and has been associated with the guidance program since that time. Along the way she became girls athletic director and again did an admirable job in establishing this program. As the era of the “Sputnik” ended, so does this era we have all been so fortunate to have experienced. In June of this year, Mrs. MacKrell will be leaving Strong Vincent for the world of retirement and relaxation. So, as she sits and “watches the birds” and “listens to the grass grow”, we must all reflect on the impact and influence she has made on the lives of each student she counseled, taught, and cared for. With deep gratitude, the 1985-86 Spokesman staff dedicates our yearbook to Elizabeth MacKrell. ’86 Yearbook Dedication Mrs. MacKrell guides her students to the right decisions. Guiding Our Steps What happened to Mrs. Mu- Mrs. Davis does her impression sarra’s neck? of Madonna. The 1985-86 Strong Vincent faculty has once again proven to play an important role in the education of our student body. Due to our faculty’s high teaching standards and extreme patience, they have helped us all to meet our individual educational goals. This year’s entire student body wishes to thank the faculty for all they have done and hopes that, in the future, they will continue their excellence in teaching. “Trust me.” Mr. Case shows his excitement at a pep rally. Principal Fiorelli The students of Strong Vincent are proud to have Mr. Raymond Fiorelli as their hardworking and loyal principal. It is fortunate for this school to have a principal who supports the activities of the students and staff wholeheartedly. Mr. Fiorelli feels his staff is the finest in the school district and that the students are all unique, creative, and full of potential. Although his job can be very demanding, he claims that the pressures he faces are worth it and he wouldn’t trade his work for anything. In spite of graduating from Cathedral Prep, Mr. Fiorelli’s loyalty to Strong Vincent is unshakable. Our students are indeed priveleged to have such a man as the base and stronghold of such a fine school as Strong Vincent. Mr. Fiorelli accepts a gift from the Japanese delegation. Our principal smiles at the yearbook staff’s efforts. Assistant Principals Mr. Gdaniec makes sure the school Mr. Gdaniec is ready and runs smoothly. willing. Mr. Joseph Gdaniec spent many years learning his profession. He first graduated from Gannon University with a B.A. in mathematics and went on to attend the University of Pittsburgh where he received a Masters in Education in the secondary level. He also attended Edinboro and the State University of New York at Fredonia for Graduate work. These impressive credentials are what make him such a professional in his field. Mr. Gdaniec entered his chosen field as a math teacher and dedicated the last twenty years of his life trying to improve the school system. Eight of those twenty years he has spent as Assistant Principal here at Vincent. His reasons for staying here are simple; he thinks this school is excellent, despite the declining enrollment, and he enjoys the students. He has a high opinion of the student body, defining them as “pleasant” and “mature at making decisions.” Overall he feels that “Strong Vincent has a fine reputation and has maintained excellent standards” and as a result he is “proud of its graduates in a tradition that has lasted through generations.” The 1985-86 school year marks the first full year with our new assistant principal, Miss Joyce Savocchio. Appropriately, Miss Savocchio is a 1961 graduate of Strong Vincent. Her credentials include a Bachelor’s degree in History and secondary education from Mercyhurst, as well as a Master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh and a certificate in Secondary School Administration from Edinboro University. Although she misses teaching tenth grade History, Miss Savocchio says that being an assistant principal is a very “challenging” and “creative experience” for her as she has the opportunity to see the best in our student body. Sometimes the job of assistant principal can be very demanding, but Miss Savocchio claims she enjoys working with people, and with our fantastic students here at Strong Vincent. She feels our school is operating very well this year as kids are making an effort to gain an education. Despite the many things to be done and the variety of problems she sees, Miss Joyce Savocchio has become a great asset to our school administration. Mr. Bambauer- Girl’s Counselor. Homecoming candidate, Valerie Lewis and her escort, Brian Wil- liamson. The 1985-86 school year was a spectacular year for activities at SV. All the students played an important role in the many activities that highlighted this school year. From the pep rallies and assemblies to the games at the stadium, the student body have shown their interest and enthusiasm. One of the dominant activities was this year’s Homecoming game and dance. Many students contributed to the success of the dance, as well as other activities. 18 and About Kelly and Andy are ready for a night out. The sextet. After being struck with a pie, Paula resembles a gremlin. Frank tries to reason with Chris. The astounding spirit of Strong Vincent can be seen in their many enthusiastic rallies and assemblies. During the football and basketball seasons, the auditorium is packed with stu- dents cheering on their teams. The cheerleaders participate actively by leading the students in chants. The band demon- strates its talent with upbeat songs which add to the excite- ment. During the course of the year our students have many entertaining assemblies. We hope that the upcoming years prove to be just as fun and high- spirited. Strong Vincent is a fine school and the pride shown at our rallies proves it. Valerie, Bryan, Lisa, and Tim are presented to the student Tim and Tony: double image, body as members of the Homecoming Court. Good Times At Karlyn and Shelly: Definite scientist material. Rob, Bob, Tom, and Brian are planning to build an annex to Strong Vincent. If Only For Tom Bello: Party Animal. Jessica Smith has her eye on someone. Karlyn Schultz and Mike Firch really do make the “Perfect Couple”. Bina Shah and Sherry Troutman take a minute to relax. Dave Hart says, “Who says freshman can’t dance.” If you missed the 1985-86 Homecoming Dance, you missed a very enjoyable evening. The event gives our students the chance to dress fancy and show off their spectacular dance steps. This year’s dance was held at the Masonic Temple where refreshments and music were the order of the day. 26 Kris Schultz and Frank Penpek want to be alone. A wonderful time was had by all and we suggest that if you didn’t go this year, make it a point to attend next year. You won’t be disappointed. Participation, hard work, and dedication are the most important standards of any successful club or organization. Here at Vincent, our clubs and organizations are a big part of our school life. Each club member works hard and to the best of his or her ability to make his or her own organization the best that it could possibly be. Strong Vincent takes great pride in its clubs and organizations and the yearbook staff commends the student body for its spirited and active involve- ment. 92 Something’s Afoot! Under the direction of Mr. Hathaway, the National Honor Society has become a respected part of society. The members are eager to get involved and often sacrifice some of their time for the needy in our area. Some of their projects include collecting for the March of Dimes and selling daffodils to benefit the Cancer Society. Most of all, the National Honor Society is responsible for showing the Erie community that Strong Vincent cares. 94 Student Council The 1985-86 Student Council has once again benefited the entire student body. The council sponsored and organized the Homecoming Ceremony and dance. The dance was held at the Masonic Temple and the theme was “If Only For One Night.” The Student Council also sponsored after school mixers and holiday activities, such as the “Door Decorating Contest” at Christmas time and a Valentine’s Day dance held at the Erie Maennerchor Club. The student council, in collaboration with the National Honor Society, also decorated the front halls at Christmas and collected food for the needy. This year’s Student Council also played the important role of representing the student body and improving communications between them and the entire schooling administration. Members of Student Council were (B to T and L to R): Tina Sansom, Kelly Payne, Gaurang Shah, William Teribery, Connie Walker, Dana Massing, Denise Conners, Colleen Brady, Kathy Lukowich, Jenny Johns, Bina Shah, Dawn Huegel, Amy Brookhauser, Jane McFadden, Lisa Kovacs, Ann Fatter, Mel Massey, Bonnie Roscinski, Jeff Barr, Rob Brower, Pete Hathaway, Bonnie Walker, Keith McDermott, Yuri Graves, Doug Gaeckle, Tom Bello, Jeff Dunbar, Lee Kauffman, Ken Walker, Angelo Montante. This year was no exception. The staff is made up of the advisor, Jessica Musarra; editor, Kelly Green; co- editor, Sherry Troutman, copy editor, Kristen Hersperger, and a variety of students who work well together. Each student specializes in a certain yearbook occupation; layouts, copy-writing, artwork and typing; but, everyone gets a chance to express their ideas and experience different assignments. The members of the Spokesman Staff hope that this yearbook brings back fond memories of yet another fine year at Strong Vincent. 96 Mary and Kris: Yearbook time is serious time! These people also take orders for the Valentine’s Day Carnation Sale. We’d like to commend this year’s group of Spokesman salespeople for their support and cooperative help in both yearbook collections and sales. Morning Yearbook Every year a few selected students, under the direction of Mr. Minzenber- ger, take part in a class called Morning Yearbook. The people involved in this class help to put together orders for the yearbook and make yearbook deliver- ies. This year’s class organized a candy sale to help lower the cost of this year’s Spokesman. Morning Yearbook also sponsored and organized the annual Carnation Sale held during the Valen- tine’s Day holiday. We should once again like to extend thanks to the Morning Yearbook staff for their dedi- cation and help in making the ’85-86 Mike Copper, Brian Lipiec, Mr. Minzenberger. New computer printing and inexperi- enced staff members are the reasons newspaper sites for their delays. Now that everyone has had a chance to learn the “business” of running a newspaper, the staff feels that they will make progress in the second half of the year. They plan many issues such as the Valentines special; The Spectrum, which is a special sports issue, and the year end literary magazine. “I feel that the staff will progress quite well and I hope that we manage to pick up some Gannon journalistic awards again this year, especially the Communi- ty Service Award which we’ve won the past few years,” Editor Jeff Barr stated. At the 1985 Gannon Tri-County Journal- ism Contest, the newspaper staff took a 1st place award in community service. Pete Sala also earned a third place for his sports features. Despite the problems faced by the newspaper, the new format and style promises to be a big improvement and everyone anxiously awaits the first edi- tion. 113 French Club Top Row: L. McCoy, C. Paula Vitale is this year’s President and has been an active member in the organization. The other four officers include Vice-President - Melissa Mathers, Treasurer - Onkham Rattanaphasouk, and Secretary - Jenny Johns. These four officers work hard to plan events that are useful and fun. They are commended for their hard work and we hope this tradition will continue for many years. Peer Jury The Peer Jury consists of students from around the county who meet in the Court House twice a month. They hear cases of juveniles who have pleaded guilty to their crimes, but have opted to go in front of the Peer Jury instead of going on regular probation. The jurors then draw up a contract which the offender must sign and obey. The contract may demand anything from writing a paper or taking a tour of the county jail or detention center, to community service work. This system has been very effec- tive so far and is the first of its kind in this state. Peer Jury Members are Mike Rupp, and Bina Shah. Spanish Club Top Row: J. Rivera, B. Johnson, D. Garity, D. The students not only learn the different parts of cameras, but they also develop their own photos. They actively partici- pate in photography contests and increase their skills through competi- tion. This year the club photographed, designed, and printed a 1986 Senior Calender that is sure to be cherished by the graduating class. The photography club has been most successful. Although they have not had a chance to debate this year, the team is hopeful and continues to work on their speeches. The topic of debate for this year is the water problem in our country. Our debate students are working hard to prove their points and, with luck, they will have a chance to show what they’ve learned. Hewitt, Brian Johnson, Fred Watts, John Trohoske, Chris Ulrich, Brian Dobmeier, John Ferrarro, James Keyes, Joe Dash. Middle Row: Tony Weary, John Popavic, Scott Johnson, Sean Carlson, Kevin Sharr, Jeff Gibbens. Roosevelt Carson, Darryl Crosby. Bottom Row: Anthony Smith, Tim Smith, Armand Rocco, Tony Quinn, Chris Kaeberlein, Kevin Rowland, Tim Bodamer. The 1985-86 Junior Varsity Foot- ball Team ended its season with an impressive 4-1 record. This year’s team worked very well together, and with the excellent coaching of both John Cocchione and John Vogel, they managed to tie for the Metro League Title with both Tech and Prep. Some of the team’s victories were scored over a tough Tech team, 8-6, and a ravishing over East High, 18-0. The team was strong on both the offensive and defensive sides of the playing field. The squad had a strong backfield led by sophomore Armand Rocco and a solid group of linebackers led by sophomore Chris Kaeberlein. Some of the promising players who will be returning to play for next year’s Varsity team sophomores Tim Smith and Armand Rocco. Pin After Pin, State potential, Gary Zurn, displays his medal and progression chart from Section Wrestling. Frank Rocco gives the “thumbs-up” signal after a 25 second pin. Jim Parker releases his head gear after a grueling match. Gary Zurn prepares to finish off another opponent. Coaches Ponsford and Brabender concentrate on the match at hand. Although the Metro title was out of reach for the 1985-86 wrestling team, they did earn the “City Champs” title with a 4-2 record. The grapplers also scored many other impressive victories and ended their season with a 9- 6 record overall. Top wrestlers this year were senior, Frank Rocco 23-2; junior, Gary Zurn 23-0; and freshman, Mark Weindorf 17-4. Even heavyweight, Jim Parker, greatly improved his record to 12-11 for this season. During the course of the season, Vincent showed other teams that we are not easily beaten. Ashtabula was put to shame as Vincent showed them the lights and defeated them 50-12. At Sections, 8 Vincent wrestler qualified for the District-10 meet. Competing for districts will be Gary Zurn, Frank Rocco, Tim Feldmann, Rich Runstedler, Tony Quinn, Armand Rocco, and Jim Parker. Out of these 8 qualifiers, Vincent will most likely send one or more to States. Other members of the team include John Corbin, Dave Cunningham, and Sean Carlson. This year’s team was again coached by Mark Brabennder, Buck Buchannon and John Ponsford. Win After Win. Before his match, Frank Rocco makes Jim Parker shows us how he disposes of his opponents, sure his equipment is in check. Tony Quinn rides out his opponent. Armand Rocco is about to show his victim the lights. 127 After all matches are completed, the wrestlers take a few moments to congratulate each other. Varsity Girls Give It Kelly Amsden: putting one past the opposition. Row 1: Kelly Amsden, Tammy McKelvy. Row 2: Barb Hime, Peggy Maughn, Brenda Lassman. Row 3: Yvette Lee, Paulette McLeod. Row 4: Deanna Zazado, Dawn King. Top: Coach Niebauer. 128 “Where’d the ball go?” Brenda Lassman looks for an opportunity to aid the team. Their Best Shot Tammy McKelvy prepares to receive a pass. Dawn King attempts to get a pass to a teammate. The Girl’s Varsity Basketball team ended this year’s season with a record of 2-12. Though this record is somewhat disappointing, our girls are not discouraged. This is a rebuilding year for the team, with most of its members being underclassmen. Kelly Amsden was the only Senior member and her participation will be missed next year. Each girl is extremely skilled in the game and by next year’s season it is certain that each team member will give it her all and these girls will become like one unit, defeating the competition and improving their record. Good Luck girls, you have our support! Run, Kelly, Run! 129 Varsity Shoots Tim Smith looks confused. Pat Parra shoots for two. Matt Harris dribbles his best. The players listen carefully to Mr. Flinn’s plan. Chris Ulrich, Pat Parra, and Joe Vieirra wait for their turn. For Tony Harper is looking forward to the game. Dean Oatis concentrates on get- ting the point. High “Hoops” Matt Harris is on the run. Chris Ulrich, guarding his own. The 1985-86 Strong Vincent Boys’ Varsity Basketball Team had a productive season consisting of 13 wins and 11 losses. Under the excellent coaching of Pete Flinn and Jim Delsandro, the team managed to utilize its outstanding defense and super quick speed to overcome their opponents. Led by senior guard Matt Harris and junior point guard Dean Oatis, the team put together several thrilling victories, including back-to-back 61-60 defeats over Tech and Prep. With the exception of senior Marr Harris, all the players will be returning to play for next year’s team. The team managed to make the District-10 AAA basketball playoffs and in the first round knocked off Harborcreek 80-48. Finally, we’d all like to wish our Varsity team luck in their future contests of the District-10 playoffs. Tony Harper looks for an open person. Pat Parra feels like he’s walking on air. 131 J.V.ers take Steps 1st: John Santone, Bob Hime, Ed Adams, Brian Hoydiac. 2nd: Brian Bello, Bob Harris, Jon Minor, Mike Blanks, Ricky Joyce. 3rd: Kevin Rollenger, Jerome Williams, Chris Kaberlein, James Keyes, Mark Leone, Pete Nyarri, Coach Jim Dellsandro. Chris Kaberlein goes on the defense. Ed Adams: running the offense. J.V. players warm up for the big game against McDowell. James Keyes looks for assis- tance. The 1985-86 Junior Varsity Basketball Team had a very disappointing season, finishing it with a final record of 4 wins and 19 losses. The team’s major weaknesses were its lack of heighth and experience; however, team discipline and an excellent man-to-man defense were some of the high points of this year’s squad. Despite losing the majority of their games, the team did manage to put together some impressive victories. This year’s JV squad defeated East High 48-42 and scored a come-from-behind victory over Warren 54-52. Next year’s team looks to be much better and returning key sophomores who will be playing on next year’s Varsity team include, Ed Belluomini, Chris Kaeberlein, and Ed Adams. 132 to Dunk Competition Barb Hime concentrates on the game. The team watches from the sideline. The 1985-86 Girl’s J.V. Basketball team has showed sportsmanship qualities that are certain to aid the varsity team in the upcoming seasons. The team’s season ended with a record of 3-11. Though this record is not so impressive, it doesn’t include the effort of these fiesty underclassmen. In contests against East and St. Ben’s the girls were defeated only by one basket. The fact that it is difficult to build up a consistently good J.V. team often goes unnoticed. Only by the end of the season do the new members feel comfortable with their place on the team. This J.V. team shows promise and the sophomores that are moving up will no doubt be a credit to our varsity team as well. 133 Diamond Girls Steal 2nd Lisa Montie concentrates to make the play. Top Row: Coach Neibauer, Denise Driscoll, Brenda Lassman, Patty Gray, Vicky Stewart, Dawn King, Julie Roberts, Bonnie Walker, Nancy Pettit, Mona Stewart, Andy Konzel. “Endeavoring to be number 1!” was how Brenda Lassman described the ’85 softball team; their endeavors took them to the playoffs and tied them with Villa and McDowell for the Metro Championship. Although the team gave it their all, defeating McDowell 9-8 in Playoffs, they took second in Metro due to a loss to Villa, 7-5. Taking second in Metro did not stop this team. They participated in District 10 playoffs but were knocked out of the race for states by losing to Mead ville 2-1. 134 Take your best shot! Dawn King shows great form under the hot sun. But Fail to Score. Bottom Row: Jill Lakari, Doresa Woodward, Lisa Rocco, Lisa Montie, Margaret Maughn, Holly Sidman. All in all, this team showed great effort and ability and ended their season with a 13 and 4 record. There were also personal bests achieved this year. Strong Vincent had 2 players named to the first team: Nancy Pettit, a senior outfielder, and Mona Stewart, a junior outfielder. Vincent also had a solid second team with players Lisa Rocco, junior catcher; Vickey Stewart, senior first baseman; Lisa Montie, junior second baseman; Denise Driscoll, senior third baseman; Dawn King, freshman shortstop; and Jill Lakari, senior pitcher. If Coach Neibauer keeps showing this talent, states may be on the horizon. Mona Stewart- shown in action. Move back out field: Rease’s out for a home- run! Lisa Rocco prepares for a grand slam. A Denise Driscoll awaits the ball. Row 1: Chris Biebel, Frank Rocco, Dave Rice, Lenny Malinowski, Scott Baird, Joe Graziano, Robert Teribery, John Ritz. Best Pitch Taking a break, Matt Carlson, Ed Bellomini, and Dave Rice smile for the camera. Baseball hits a high point. Coach Grandinetti and Rich Sack rush to help John Ritz Number 19, Joe Vierra, shows his back side, from the clutches of Assistant Coach Gauriloff. The S.V. Baseball Team finished their season in fourth place, stealing home, in Metro League Play. Overall, the team had a disappointing 4 and 10 record, but shows great promise for the future. Head Coach Grandinetti feels, “that with returning, talented underclassmen like Joe Vierra, Frank Rocco, Len Malinowski, and Pete Dunford next year’s team looks to be much better.” Despite the Colonels disappointing season, the team did enjoy an impressive victory over a tough and experienced McDowell ballclub, beating the Trojans 8-6. Other impressive triumphs over Mercyhurst 8-7 and Tech 5-2 proved that the Colonel squad has some great talent and looks to have an exciting future. Runners Have The 1985-86 Girl’s Cross Country team showed much potential and pride despite their record of 1-5. Although they had only one win against Academy, they tirelessly defended Strong Vincent against tough competition. The team also enjoyed a trip to Cleveland for the “Bonnie Bell” classic race. There the girls ran against other schools and received make-up kits for their participation. After the race, the team relaxed and spent an afternoon enjoying the sights of Cleveland. The more outstanding runners this year were returning senior, Kelly Amsden; junior, Chris Spizarny; and sophomore, Amy Brookhouser. Coach Allan Thayer expects greater things for next year because the team will be more experienced. Good luck girls - we’re all behind you! Back row, L to R: Debbie Southworth, Barb Hoover, Chris Spizarny, Coach Thayer, Kelly Amsden. Row 2: Julie Roberts, Crystal Lepak, Amy Brookhouser, Jennifer Reeder, Cari Altmann. Front: Shannon Schwenk. Kelly and Mona show us how to stretch. Chris Spizarny demonstrates determination at its best. And they’re off! Mona Stewart strives for the finish line. 138 Uphill Season Row 1: Steve Campbell, Chris Milano, Jim Lassman, Mark Durnin, Manny Hamme. Standing: John Hoover, John Pelkow- ski, Robert Bemis, Christopher Krupinski, Pete Hathaway, Brian Komar and Coach: Phil Anderson. “The S.V. Cross Country team shows its version of stretching in unity.” “Steve Campbell sprints to the finish line. This year. Coach Phil Anderson led the harrier squad to a 4-2 record in Metro. The team ran up a rewarding list of credentials: They took second place in the prestigious McQuaid Invitational. Here, first place, Pete Hathaway; sixth place, Brian Komar; and seventeenth place. Bob Bemis all brought home medals. There were also many strong performances in regular season meets as well as Districts, Sections, and the McDowell Invitational which is a tri-meet with Northwestern and Linesville. Four promising freshmen joined the squad this year; unfortunately, we will lose five seniors. Good luck to these outgoing seniors and to those underclassmen who remain to continue the winning tradition. “In the lead it’s John Pelkowski ...” “ . . . followed closely “ . . . running third is by Brian Komar ...” Pete Hathaway ...” “ . . . and bringing up the rear is Robert Bemis.” 139 Field Events Stop Row 1: Valerie Lewis, Charleen Aydt, Sue Dever, Nancy Lofton, Lynn Dillon, Shannon Schwenk, Ericka Stewart, Yolanda Bowers, Amy Brookhouser. Row 2: Mr. Williams, Lynn Tolbert, Jeannine Lawton, Cari Altman, Trelane Battles, Tanya Carothers, Donna Ransil, Kristal Lepac, Kelly Kearney, Kris Hamme, Amy Renner, Mr. Prokocki, Mr. Thayer. A team that stretches together, stays together. Amy Brookhouser checks to make sure none of her opponents are gaining on her. This year’s girls’ Track Team showed an extreme sense of spirit and plenty of liveliness. Mr. Thayer, Mr. Prokocki, and Terry Williams coached the girls through four losses and one tie against East High. The team consisted mainly of freshmen; although, there were ten sophomores, one junior, and senior, Tanya Carothers. Carolyn Jones, a sophomore, was metro champ in the Javelin Throw and set a new school record of 11T6 in that event. Carolyn, along with Tanya Carothers and Ericka Stewart, qualified for and ran in the District 10 meet in Fairview; all did well. Because the team is so young, we are looking forward to their return in coming years and expect them to develop into a challenging team. Carolyn Jordan shows off her first gold medal. Cari Altman brings in the lead. Runners in Their Tracks First row: Mike Pope, Manny Hamme, Bruce Zeigler, Mike Nolan, Yod Bowers, Ken Clausen, Second row: Charleen Aydt (manager), John Hoover, Matt Nies, Steve Campbell, Chris Krupinski, Aaron Seib, James Parker, Steve Lakari, John Pelkowski. Third row: Brian Komar, Peter Hathaway, Bob Bemis, Bill Lupichuk, Tom Bello, Vic Petrusso. Steve Lakari prepares to set a new record. Field eventers warm up for victory. The 1985 track season was very successful for the distance team but less so for the sprinters and field eventers. The 3200 Relay was outstanding with the team of Brian Komar, Bill Lupichuk, Bob Bemis, and Peter Hathaway. The 3200 Relay Team made it all the way to sections and District 10. The team also scored 3rd in the Metro Meet. Bill Lupichuk scored a new school 2 mile record with the time of 10:01. Pete Hathaway agonizes over the thought of his competitor gaining on him. 141 Lady Spikers Pictured left to right bottom: Bonnie Roscinski, Tracy Corbin, Mona Stewart, Kelly Amsden. The 1985 girl’s Volleyball Team had a successful season, finishing with a final record of 9 wins and 5 losses. Under the influential coaching of Mrs. Davis, the girl’s squad made Districts but failed to reach the Finals. This year’s team was led by senior captains Dyndi Bryson, who was the team’s strongest spiker and blocker, and Mona Stewart, who was the team’s best defensive player. Rapidly Improve Row 1: Julie Gigilo, Tammy Troutman, Lori Iarussi, Patricia Gray, Loretta Dickens, Tracey Grafius, Sally Harris, Brenda Gray; Row 2: Brenda Lassman, Dawn King. Loretta Dickens shows Sally Harris practices her game saving us her excitement return, over volleyball. Senior Bonnie Roscinski also played an important role by scoring the most points for this year’s team. Although next year will be a rebuilding year, the girl’s Volleyball Team is hopeful of having another winning season. Brenda Lassman shows extreme concen- tration. 143 Golfer’s Tee Off L-R: Alethea Schroeck, Jennifer Feathers, Kelly Green, Karen Minado, Colleen Brady, Kim Leburg, Jenny Kraut, Cyndi Bryson, Felicia Schroeck, Amy Ries, Sue Kinnear, Bonnie Walker, Mona Stewart, Coach Flanagan. Sue, Cyndi, and Amy take time out of the game to smile for our camera. Kelly Green shows great concen- tration. Kim Leburg: ready to sink the ball in the hole. The 1985 Girls’ Golf Team was a very impressive squad. Under the influential coaching of Miss Flanagan, the girls won the city championship. Pacing the team were Amy Ries, Mona Stewart, Bonnie Walker, Sue Kinnear, and returning senior, District 10 semi-finalist, Cyndi Bryson. The lady Colonels put together an outstanding season with an 8-0 record in the city and 8-2 overall in metro. Some of their impres- sive victories were scored over Tech 18V4-5V6 and Academy 21-3. Miss Flanagan says enthu- siastically, “the girls worked very well together as a team and are hoping to have another victorious season next year as well.” Bonnie Walker knew she’d get her ball out of the sand trap. Jenny Feathers and Felicia Schroeck just can’t seem to find anything in that bag. Competition Row 1: Joe Graml, David Antolik. Row 2: John Alberico, Rob Penpek, Mr. Mullen. Joe Graml says, “Of course John Albs and Rob Pens pose for GQ- I want my picture taken, Golfer’s Quarterly. Golfing is my life.” Mr. Mullen .. . what an advisor! David Antolik was born with a smile. This year’s golf season was not as successful as was predicted. They completed the season with a record of 2 wins-10 losses. The golfing team consisted of seven players including John Alberico, David Antolik, Robert Penpek, Scott Grucza, and three new- comers: Joe Graml, Ricky Wellington and Brian Downey. Although this year’s team did not do well, next year’s should do much better. The Colonel linksters will have everyone returning for the following season and each is an experi- enced golfer. Swimmers Finish Below Sea Level Goody touches her toes. The Girls’ Swim Team consisted of (Top to Bottom): Jennifer Zebroski, Kim Leburg, Julie Giglio, Stephanie Irwin, Cara Reisenwebber, Stacie Rung, Goody Haugsdahl, Amy Ries, and Michelle DiMarco. Stacie is ready to take the plunge, as Michelle and Goody look on. Cara practices the crawl. The 1985-86 Strong Vincent Girls’ Swim Team led by sophomore captain Goody Haugsdahl, finished their season at the 500 mark with 3 wins and 3 losses. This year’s team scored wins over East, Tech, and Academy. Coached by Mr. Vickey, the team worked very well together and won the city championship. The squad had two outstanding record breakers when Goody Haugsdahl broke school records in both the 60 and 500 meter freestyle, while Jennifer Zebroski broke school records in the 160 and 200 meter Individual Medleys and the 100 meter backstroke. Because most of this year’s team will be returning, next year’s swimmers look to be a very strong team. The Spokesman Staff would like to dedicate this page to all of our student athletes. We are very aware of the number of hours and amount of energy they have contributed to Strong Vincent sports. We would like to call special attention to the Boys’ Swim Team: Captain- Ron Legler, Russell Stachewicz, Phil MacKenzie, Rich Eisert, Dan Smith, Jeff Collwell, Rob Sargent, Charles Cuneo, and Coach - Mr. Vickey. Thank you for all your hard work and participation. 147 Marine Team Goalie, Ralph Ifft, defends his goal against the Trojans. The 1984-85 Waterpolo season was disap- pointing in spite of the talent displayed. Many of the players were new to the team; Ron Legler and senior Mike Hardner were the only two exceptions. In midseason Ron Legler was injured and unable to participate. The overall record at the season was 1-9. In the 1985-86 season, the skills of the returning players were sharpened. Their record of 7-3, second place in Metro, and first place in the City Series proves it. The team consisted of eight seniors and four underclass- men. Senior Ron Legler and sophomore Russ Stackiewicz displayed outstanding defense especially in the meet against McDowell where we won 11-3. Ron made first team “All Metro Waterpolo” and Tim Feldman, Yuri Graves, Ralph Ifft, and Russ Stackiewicz received Honorable Mentions. The entire team deserves much credit for the hard work and devotion they all contributed. They’ve given us a team to make Strong Vincent proud. Preparing for the meet are John Parker, Mike Hardner, Russ Stackiewicz, Ralph Ifft, Yuri Graves, Mike Firch, and Goudren Haugsdahl. The team members include Mike Hardner, John Parker, Ken Spinks, Clinton Crockett, Mike Firch, Yuri Graves, Tim Feldman, Russ Stack- iewicz, Goudren Haugsdahl and Ralph Ifft. John Parker attempts to advance the ball, while teammates Ralph Ifft keeps a close eye on the goal. Practice means hard work for Onkham and Brenda. Brenda swings for the camera. The 1985 Girls’ Tennis Team finished their season with a final record of 2-5. The girls’ team lacked experience and had to face the new season without any veter- an players. “This was a Herculean task”, says Coach Hogan,” consid- ering the City’s very strong and competitive tennis league.” After a season of very hard work and determination, the girls’ reward came with two solid victories over both Academy and St. Ben’s. Pacing the girls’ squad were Dee Bowers, Onkham Rattonapha- souk, Jane McFadden, and Brenda Maxwell. Dee returns with the greatest of force. . Lenita follows her serve. Still Love Game Row 1: Ivan Mauyen, Mike Cooper, Brian Akus. Row 2: Coach Hogan, Steve Bolash, Dan Gianelli, Doug Amthor, Barry Propheter. The 1985 Boys’ Tennis Team had a long season last spring, coming through with four wins and five losses. A combination of three seniors, two jun- iors, three sophomores, and four freshmen packed powerful forehands and backhands to defeat some of the strongest teams in the metro league. Although the boys’ coach, Mr. Hogan, feels that the team will miss their three graduated seniors, he is optimistic about this year’s team which will include three new seniors and two juniors. He is especially hopeful about the winning ability of two favored seniors: Mike Copper and Brian Akus. Barry Propheter is sure it’s his point. Due to the spirit and enthusiasm of this year’s Boys’ Tennis Team, Coach Hogan feels confi- dent that they will see a strong winning season. Dan Gianelli: S.V.’s own John McEn- roe. The news of his death was a great shock to us all and was received everywhere with feelings of deepest grief and sincere sympathy for his parents. We at Strong Vincent remember Reggie as a warm and friendly person always willing to help, as a person who was loyal to his school and friends. As an athlete, he was a member of the football, wrestling, waterpolo, and track teams. We have all gained something from our association with Reggie. He set such a wonderful example of what a young man should be that our lives have been enriched by contact with him. Such a life is complete, no matter how many years it lasts. J. Plavcan 156 It’s Raining in Love I don’t know what it is, but I distrust myself when I start to like a girl a lot It makes me nervous. I don’t say the right things or perhaps I start to examine, . evaluate, • . i compute what I am saying. r If I say, “Do you think it’s going to rain?” and she says, “I don’t know,” I start thinking: “Does she really like me?” In other words I get a little creepy. A friend of mine once said, “It’s twenty times better to be friends with someone than it is to be in love with them.” I think he’s right and besides it’s raining somewhere, programming flowers and keeping snails happy. That’s all taken care of. BUT if a girl likes me a lot and starts getting real nervous and suddenly begins asking me funny questions and looks sad if I give the wrong answers and she says things like, “Do you think it’s going to rain?” and I say, “It beats me,” and she says, “Oh,” and looks a little sad at the clear blue California sky, I think. Thank God, it’s you, baby, this time, instead of me. Richard Brautigan Patron List John Adams Schwinn Cyc. Inc. Alliance College Alliance Home of Erie (P.N.A. Club) Drs.
