Coach Pete Flinn’s talented club thus became just the second PIAA champion in Erie history and the first public school titlist Cathedral Prep bagged the initial crown five years ago with a 50-40 de- cision over Allentown Allen Vincent, making the tedious jour- ney to the finals for the first time since 1932, had things pretty much its own way against the Trojans Back in ‘32, the Colonels had suffered a 24-19 reversal to Old Forge. The only other finalist prior to 1980 was East, the Warriors finishing in second place in 1926, ironically to Nanticoke. This time around, the District-Two champions were no match for a Vin- cent team that fulfilled a mission it embarked on last November It was always in the back of my mind,” Colonels' coach Pete Flmn said of the coveted state crown We worked very hard and it’s very rewarding to sec a group of young men accomplish something of this magnitude. They earned everything they got with long hours of practice and dedication. Vincent had all the makings of a great club when practice opened in mid-November. Blessed with experi- ence. size and ability, it was no secret the Colonels would be a team to be reckoned with. Just how powerful the club would be became evident early in the sea- son when the Red and Black disposed of every opponent in sight. The club roared through December with seven wins, then added six more in January as the streak reached 13 After five more victories, the Colo- nels traveled to Youngstown to square off against a potent Rayen club. The Ohio team pulled out a 45- 43 triumph, the first blemish against Vincent's record And. although unknown at that time, it was to be the only setback for the Vincent club all year. Flinn’s charges finished the regular year with three straight for a 21-1 ledger entering the Class AAA playoffs. Franklin (79-51), Sharon (71-47) and Academy (82-71) bowed in Dis- trict-10 play as the Colonels added the D-10 crown to their earlier Metro diadem. In intcrdistrict competition, it was Vincent against the WPIAL and it was no contest. Southmoreland (47-30), Ellwood City (58-41) and Aliquippa (68-50) all were eliminated, setting up a long- anticipated Western final matching the Colonels and Beaver Falls. Dan Gianelli of the Colonels steps off the team bus with S.V.’s PIAA Class AAA trophy.
