Coach Pete Flinn’s talented club thus became just the second PIAA champion in Erie history and the first public school titlist Cathedral Prep bagged the initial crown five years ago with a 50-40 de- cision over Allentown Allen Vincent, making the tedious jour- ney to the finals for the first time since 1932, had things pretty much its own way against the Trojans Back in ‘32, the Colonels had suffered a 24-19 reversal to Old Forge. The only other finalist prior to 1980 was East, the Warriors finishing in second place in 1926, ironically to Nanticoke. This time around, the District-Two champions were no match for a Vin- cent team that fulfilled a mission it embarked on last November It was always in the back of my mind,” Colonels' coach Pete Flmn said of the coveted state crown We worked very hard and it’s very rewarding to sec a group of young men accomplish something of this magnitude. They earned everything they got with long hours of practice and dedication. Vincent had all the makings of a great club when practice opened in mid-November. Blessed with experi- ence. size and ability, it was no secret the Colonels would be a team to be reckoned with. Just how powerful the club would be became evident early in the sea- son when the Red and Black disposed of every opponent in sight. The club roared through December with seven wins, then added six more in January as the streak reached 13 After five more victories, the Colo- nels traveled to Youngstown to square off against a potent Rayen club. The Ohio team pulled out a 45- 43 triumph, the first blemish against Vincent's record And. although unknown at that time, it was to be the only setback for the Vincent club all year. Flinn’s charges finished the regular year with three straight for a 21-1 ledger entering the Class AAA playoffs. Franklin (79-51), Sharon (71-47) and Academy (82-71) bowed in Dis- trict-10 play as the Colonels added the D-10 crown to their earlier Metro diadem. In intcrdistrict competition, it was Vincent against the WPIAL and it was no contest. Southmoreland (47-30), Ellwood City (58-41) and Aliquippa (68-50) all were eliminated, setting up a long- anticipated Western final matching the Colonels and Beaver Falls. Dan Gianelli of the Colonels steps off the team bus with S.V.’s PIAA Class AAA trophy. Upon a narrow flight of stairs In a narrow little room As I lie upon my bed In the early evening gloom Impaled on my wall My eyes can dimly see The pattern of my life And the puzzle that is me. From the moment of my birth To the instant of my death There are patterns I must follow Just as I must breathe each breath. Mr. Barthelson obtained a B.S. degree from Lock Hayes State Teacher s College and also studied at Gannon University. He has been teaching 35 years, 34 of which he spent teaching here at Strong Vincent. Through his professional years, he has taught biology, health, physical education, and environmental science. Mr. Barthelson is well liked by his students and fellow teachers. He is very dependable and always has time for his students. He is noted for being the first teacher at school in the morning and is usually the last to leave. Mr. Barthelson interests include hunting, fishing, and cooking, which is one of his favorites. He is also mechanically wise. He is interested in people in general: His care for students doesn't just end at the close of the school year: he is a counselor at a summer camp and he also takes part in educational committees for writing curriculum and deciding which textbooks are best for students. The Spokesman Staff feels that they have dedicated this year's book to a great man and a terrific teacher: Mr. Glenn Barthelson. 0 0 0 0 0 Mr. Bart attracts an audience while lecturing. From the colorful Mrs. Williams, and the patient Mr. Plavcan, to the gruff Mr. Case, the staff has made Vincent a respected institu- tion for higher education. Mr. Donattucci — Wanna buy a watch? Dear Students: We are proud to present our 1985 edition of the SPOKESMAN. This yearbook will enable you to relive the best years of your life ... so far. Long shall we love her, Our Alma Mater, Vincent High. Raymond Fiorelli Principal, S.V.H.S. Time after time Mr. Joseph Gdaniec and Mr. Charles Siggia have proven to be competent and able leaders. Mr. Gdaniec has been assistant Principal for the past seven years and has shown a great understanding of student needs and problems. He relates well to both faculty and students and understands his job inside out. Mr. Siggia has been acting assistant Principal for a relatively short time, but still he manages to get the job done admirably and has earned the respect of his colleagues. Mrs. Mary Alice Schultz, Strong Vincent's assistant Principal for 14 years, retired in January of this year. Mrs. Schultz first came to S.V. in 1958 to teach English and AP English. In January of 1971 she became assistant Prin- cipal and has held the post ever since. Besides the duties of assistant Principal, Mrs. Schultz has also been advisor to the Senior Class and girls' atten- dance and discipline administra- tor. Mrs. Schultz loves to travel. She has been to many well known places here and abroad. This summer she went to Swit- zerland. Among her other plea- sures are reading and sewing. It is the sincere wish of the Administration, the faculty, and the students that Mrs. Schultz enjoy a well deserved retirement. HH Mr. Bambauer - Girls' Counselor. Mr. Brabender - Boys' Phys. The Class of 1986 has to be one of the most spirited classes ever! They are active participants in school athletic and academic activities and do very well in both. Many students have a great deal of responsibility. The classes are more difficult this year and many students are also holding down after-school jobs. As their third year of high school draws to a close, the class of '86 can now look forward to becoming leaders in the school. We hope that this year has been enjoyable and successful and that next year will hold more of the same. Wille Manus: sweet talking his way out Just another day in the life of of trouble with Mrs. Steele. freshman — Robert Allgeier. This year the Spokesman is featuring freshmen. The freshmen class came into new school surroundings with pride and soaring spirits. They participated in school activities such as the in school volleyball and wrestling matches. The freshmen also joined athletic programs and showed excellence in their academic performance. This year's 9th graders made new friends and were introduced to many different elective courses. We hope the freshmen had a fun and exciting first year and are ready to continue growing in the three years yet to come. The group meets two Thurs- days a month at the Erie County Courthouse with other student repre- sentatives from area schools to hear juvenile cases. They do not decide whether a person is guilty or innocent because the defendant has already pleaded guilty; they just listen to the defendant's side of the story and ask questions of the person and his or her parents. They do decide, however, what the court punishment should be. These punishments may include resti- tution charges, a specified number of hours to be worked in the community, apology to the victim, or whatever else the Peer Jury feels will help the juvenile to pay for his crime and also to gain insight into his problem behavior. ■0®4 Front row (from left): Pat Riegel, John Parker, Lee Kaufman, Jeff Dunbar Back row: Tom Bello, Ralph Ifft, Michael Firch, James Parker. It is not often we find a class where the teacher and the students work hard together and accomplish a great deal. This is so with our 1984-85 S.V. The band has not only appeared at football games and pep rallies, but has also been involved in community and extracommunity activities. They participated in several parades and The Band Exhibition sponsored by Academy High. Once again we had several students perform in District Band. No one can over express that feeling of joy that accompanies a win.
