For the background we use the Alma Mater, trying to capture its intensity with sounds, with shouts, with spirit. For the colors, we use friends and classmates, Etching their bright, shining faces forever- Preserving the smiles for all who hold dear This Spokesman of 1984. 4 Long was the way and hard” Moving in, moving along. Life always gets harder toward the summit” Moving, moving up. Yet the climber upward turns his face Moving on, moving on! 5 PRINCIPAL Mr. Raymond Fiorelli has been our devoted principal for the past two years. He has not only been very cooperative with the teachers and students alike, but has shown great concern for student participation in school activities and for more school spirit. With patience and understand- ing, he has given us the privileges of having more pep rallies and assemb- lies, and extra curricular activities. Because of his dedication and leadership, he has won the respect of students as well as his fellow colleagues. He will be remembered as the approachable principal, who has done an exceptional job in maintaining the well-being of our school. ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS Mrs. Mary Alice Schultz and Mr. Joseph Gdaniec, who have been the Assistant Principals at Strong Vincent for many years, aided Mr. Fiorelli in his second year as Principal with the administrative duties. Their responsibilities include the maintenance of the student records, the evaluation of student transcripts, and the attendance and discipline of the entire student body. Mrs. Schultz and Mr. Gdaniec are such capable and experienced administrators, that we are honored and grateful to have them at our school. We are looking forward to having them with us in the years to come. Mona Lisa in the library. MORE THAN JUST TEACHING Many students do not realize the important role our faculty and administration play in our high school life. They go far beyond just providing us with a source of academic growth by creating an atmosphere of friendliness to make our learning process easier. They coach us, advise us, and lend a helping hand whenever possible. The faculty actively participates in assemblies, student government, and the athletic program. During our high school years, many student-teacher friendships are formed which endure for a lifetime. Introducing the 1983-84 SVHS cheerleaders! 8 Sheer determination. IN MEMORIAM The sudden death of Mr. Robert Ferretti, one of our favorite teachers, shocked and saddened us all. Mr. Ferretti died on Saturday, May 7, 1983 at Hamot Medical Center due to a heart attack. He taught Math and Computer classes, and was an avid tennis coach and enthusiast. Under his direction, Strong Vincent tennis teams won five metro championships. Bob Ferretti was well- known throughout the City of Erie and nearby townships for initiating some of the largest Tennis Tournaments ever held in this area. His love for the game also led him to work summers for the City Parks and Recreation Bureau, teaching youngsters of all ages the basics of tennis. He was an excellent teacher, devoted husband and father, and a friend of all who knew him. When such a man dies, his memory will be forever cherished. Board of Directors r Thomas C. Throughout the past year there have been many activities and social events related to our school which kept the student body moving with enthusiasm and ex- citement. From the pep rallies and assemblies to the crowning of our Homecoming Queen, these activi- ties all gave us an opportunity to break away from our daily class life. Members of the faculty were a big help in organizing many of the activities. Their cooperation and guidance seemed to have made every event a success. All in all, it was time well spent for everyone. The Colonel spirit came alive as the cheerleaders led the student body into various cheers and chants. To continue the tradition of the ‘‘Prep Rallies”, the Senior boys ‘‘went bananas” dressed up as cheerleaders. Faculty members also showed the Colonel spirit by introducing new cheers to the student body. To go along with the excitement, the Colonel stage band provided music while the Twirlers, Pom Pons and Colorguard performed their routines. Another addition to the pep rallies were the antics of the new Colonel, Scott Leone. Thanks to the entire school the pep rallies became a successful part of the school year. HOMECOMING DANCE 1983 TONIGHT I CELEBRATE MY LOVE This years' Homecoming dance proved to be a big success. Together they stand by each other with pride, determination, and hopes for the future. These out- standing students will be the leaders of our school in the years to follow. The undergraduates have faithfully supported our school in assemb- lies, pep rallies, and athletics. Their ideas have influenced and developed our organizations and clubs. They can be counted on to continually participate in special school activities - play and fund- raisers, as well as social events. Their optimistic attitude and enthu- siastic involvement prove the fact that they stand together. Rocky IV. 30 UNDERGRADS Christine Honey has a good day. Cleaning right down to the shine. FRESHMEN . .. MOVING IN Moving into a new environment can be an interesting, exciting, and yet a difficult experience. As the doors of our school were opened in early September, the incoming Fresh- men seemed to settle in rather easily and each ones’ personal space began to grow. They made new friends, met new teachers, participated in the athletic program, and adapted themselves to our system. We hope the Freshmen enjoyed their first year and that they will continue to be active in school sports and activities. Mr. Brabender psyches up the Freshmen boys during gym. Don’t bother us now, we’re eating lunch. Put your head on my shoulder. All smiles sitting on the bench. SOPHOMORES ... MOVING ALONG With one year under their belts, the Sophomores soon became more comfortable with their new surround- ings. They were able to choose now from a variety of courses offered to them. This was also the year for them to join, join, join! Be it an athletic team, cheerleading squad, or one of the many clubs here at S. V, they showed their enthusiasm by par- ticipating in ail the activities. They especially enjoyed the pep rallies because now they were laughing at the Freshmen in the Peanut Gallery. MOVING UP As the Juniors patiently waited to move up the line to become Seniors, they were a big asset to our school in the athletic program, clubs, and student government. They have given support to many school involved activities and have shown qualities of leadership in thoughts and ideas. With their Senior year approaching they begin to ask themselves many questions. Should I take A. P. English and Calculus? Or what about the P. S. A. T.? This is the year for decision making and with determination and guidance they will make the right ones. We hope they will enjoy their last year here as they shall become the leaders in '85 . THINGS WE’LL REMEMBER DIFFERENT STROKES FLASHDANCE FOCUS ON MANNERS Erie school Superintendent Thomas O’Rourke and the administration have decided to make manners instruction a district wide pilot project this year. School principals have been instructed to work on their own projects to enhance manners in each of the schools. The projects from each school will later be pooled, examined, and possibly molded into a district wide policy for future school years. Jennifer Beals STRONG VINCENT’S GASWELL In recent years, area schools have reaped the benefits of a gaswell on their property. This year, the school district drilled a gaswell in order to lower Strong Vincent’s outrageous heating bills. It is considered a good investment because the profits will greatly exceed the cost of construction. By saving Erie taxpayers money, the Colonel gaswell is a definite asset to the community. 1983 TOP TEN 1. Every Breath You Take 2. Total Eclipse Of The Heart 3. Little fled Corvette 4. Overkill 5. Queen Of The Broken Heart ‘DAY AFTER’ SHOCKS AMERICA On Sunday, November 20th, 1983 tens of millions of Americans watched the depiction of the nuclear elimination of Kansas City and observed the nightmar- ish efforts of the people 38 miles away to survive the disaster. The aftershock of the television dramatization spread across America as the population realized that nuclear war is devastating. The ‘Day After’ had a definite effect on every viewer. Anti-nuclear groups said the movie showed that our country’s peace-through strength policy is outdat- ed for the nuclear age and an arms reduction is needed to save mankind. Many shaken children simplified this philosophy by saying, We just want to grow up.” STAYING ALIVE I NOTES, INC. Risky Business Eddie Murphy- FUiDER5 l Rock’n’ Roll ’n’ Video: 1983 TOP TEN 1. For many, the tragedy of Kennedy’s death instilled a new sense of admiration for the nation’s first Catholic president. In the years that followed, the feeling for John F. Kennedy did not dim but deepened as Americans recalled the energetic young man shot down before he could fulfill his aspirations for our country. T.J. No longer will students disobeying school regulations be given a “3-day vacation.”. Under this policy a student must be academically eligible to play on sports teams by maintaining a C average in all ten credit courses. The school board feels that this will better prepare student-athlete for college. One inconsistency with this ruling is that it only affects students who are below average. Nothing has been done to improve the grades of students who receive C’s but possess the ability to earn A's and B's. Due to the controversy this issue has caused, more research has been done and future changes in the policy are expected. MANIAC ■ildll'.' ATflfli Mr. Mom -Jesse Jackson- Beach Boys ’ Wilson drownsW Dennis Wilson ESPRIT Cabbage Patch Kid As Cabbage Patch Kids swept the nation, the creators of these ex- traordinary dolls sprouted millions. Dolls with babylike features - big heads, round eyes, pudgy bodies, and outstretched arms became a much demanded item by children across America. Each one is unique and complete with birth certificates, adoption papers, double names, and personality profiles which are de- signed to increase bonding between the children and their doll-babies. No two are alike because of variations of eye, hair, skin color, and facial features. Therefore, to the proud parents of a Cabbage Patch child, these dolls are just as lovable and huggable as a real baby. The last year here for the class of 1984 was full of memories of the past and promises for the future. Four years ago we walked through the corridors of our school as Freshmen. Those years have passed by quickly, having made impressions in our minds which will last a lifetime. Seniors spend their final months reminiscing about friends, classes, parties, and special occasions which made high school life so enjoyable and rewarding. Though each of us will move on in our own direction we all will go with the increased awareness we have achieved through years of learning. Clubs are the mainstay of any school because they offer everybody, from Freshman to Senior, an opportunity for growth and active involvement through participation in various fund raisers, community projects, dances, and other social events. Anyone can join from a variety of clubs offered at school. Our clubs are active, interesting, and even exciting at times. Among the memorable fund raisers of the year were the Pie in the Face contest, the magazine drive, and delicious bake sales. MORNING YEARBOOK IT’S NOT WHETHER YOU WIN OR LOSE And the 3-2 count to Greg Ries ... It’s not whether you win or lose; it’s how you play the game. This clichfe really says it all for the Strong Vincent Colonel sports’ teams. Although many of our teams didn't enjoy a winning season, their enthusiasm and good sportsmanship prevailed. Wins were celebrated with much joy, and losses were scrutinized to illustrate the need for improvement. Good sportsmanship is a valuable characteristic of any team. It’s much more important than ability. To know that every team member has done his or her personal best, regardless of the outcome, is a fact that we, as Colonels, can take pride in. Besides a general academic pro- gram, the school offers college preparatory, advanced standing, commercial education, and learning resource programs. We think of classwork and homework as necessary evils which must be endured. Careers come from the interests we express throughout our lives. 150 AIMING FOR EXCELLENCE Superior athletes are often also superior students. Athletes who are not team super- stars can still perform well in scholastics (and they do) when they maintain fine academic records. It is not enough to fit a student into a program. The program must fit the student. Scholarly concentration - a good indication of what we are all about - and where we will be twenty years from now. 151 SUPERIOR STUDENTS College preparatory program en- ables students to pursue post- secondary education. Besides meeting college requirements, students may study in areas of special interests or talents. The commercial education provides training in skills necessary for immediate placement in a complex business world. Staff provides secretarial, clerical, and accounting training. Other skills, such as computer experiences, are offered through the math department. The general academic program offers students a complete educa- tional program with opportunities to enhance interests and abilities. 152 THEY DESERVE RECOGNITION The learning resources plan offers students with a learning disability an opportunity to participate in a general academic course while receiving assistance from the specialists. This program is tailored to fit a student’s particular educa- tional needs. Advanced Standing classes chal- lenge students in the areas of English, math, sciences, languages, and history - and - enable them to earn credit through Gannon Univer- sity while completing high school requirements. “Do you think the rain will hurt the rhubarb?’’ Not if you put it in cans!
