SPDhESfTIflN STRONG VINCENT HIGH SCHOOL 1330 W. EIGHTH STREET ERIE PA. 16502 VOLUME 53 Spokesman Garneta Taormina Receives Spokesman ’83 Dedication Garneta Taormina has been a member of the faculty in the Erie School District for 23 years. She has spent 23 years teaching at Strong Vincent High. An excellent teacher, she received her Baccalaureate degree in Business Education from Villa Maria College. As a teacher Mrs. Taormina always shows her students warmth and understanding, someone always willing to explain and re-explain a problem to a student in need of help. Her interests in her students extends beyond the classroom each day — she is always available on extra-help nights after school. 3 The 1983 Spokesman staff is proud to dedicate this yearbook to a wonderful, deserving person and teacher — our own petite Mrs. Garneta Taormina. Opening Remarks To put together a yearbook requires much hard work, as well as the cooperation of all staff members. I’d especially like to express my thanks to those students who contributed overtime and extra efforts to make this years’ Spokesman” the best ever. Without dedicated photographers, typists, interviewers, etc. the editors would find the work insurmountable. I hope when you leaf through this book, it will mean something special to each of you every time you pick it up. A yearbook is a book of memories of the years gone by. I sincerely hope that Spokesman 83 is that for each of you. These years can never be replaced — and as you perceive the future changes from 1983 to (?) perhaps you will see these as the Good Times of your life. 4 Perceptions 5 Principal This year we welcomed a new Principal. Mr. Raymond Fiorelli. Mr. Fiorelli shoulders the administrative responsibilities of our school with a calm but indomitable spirit. Flis impressive background includes administra- tive positions at East High School and Wayne Middle School. He is not new to Strong Vincent, as he served here from 1975 to 1978 as an Assistant Principal and also as Acting Principal. He is back with us now - what better way to instill and insure high futuristic standards of education than to be blessed with this administrator who has already proven that he possesses insight into the minds and hearts of all? We will all remember Mr. Fiorelli as the approachable Principal who not only got things done but showed sincere concern for school spirit and growth of student participation in school activities. Assistant Principals Mr . Schultz and Mr. Gdanicc. Assistant Principals of Strong Vincent for many years, aided Mr. Fiorelli with administrative duties. The Assistant Principals are responsible for the maintenance of all student records, the evaluation of student transcripts, the discipline and attendance of the entire student body. We are honored and grateful to have such capable, experienced administrators as Mrs. Schultz and Mr. Gdaniec. They have maintained high standards for our school and we hope they will remain to help Strong Vincent progress through the years ahead. Mr. Bambauer - Girl ' Coun- selor Mr. Barthelson - Biology. The students have been an excellent audience and the pep rallies have proven to be very FREEZE FRAME successful. The advisors, Miss Williams and Mrs. Musarra, enabled the student body to present the play. Without them it wouldn't have been possible. There were two student directors, Michelle Dever and Stephanie Hetrick, who also were an asset. It took alot of hard work and long hours to make it work. S.V. Brian Gaines, Rob Young, Mike Smith, Matt McCormick, Joe Ceresa. Mgr. Bob Majszyk, Second Row Coach Pete Flinn, Frank Penpeck, James Atkinson, Anthony Dickenson, Willie Hollis, Rich Jenkins, Dan Gianelli. Strong Vincent’s 1982-83 basketball team, under fifth year coach Pete Flinn, had a productive season. The Colonels started Metro play by defeating Cathedral Prep. From here S.V. proceeded to use size as its strength in capturing a District 10 playoff spot in the Double A Class. The team was led by Seniors Willie Hollis and James Atkinson. Other starters were Juniors Todd Jones and Joe Ceresa along with Sophomore Anthony Dickens. Other contributing performers were Seniors Matt McCormick and Tom Holodnak, Juniors Frank Penpeck and Rob Young with Sophomore John Blanks. The Colonels should have another successful season next year with a lot of enthusiastic, talented athletes returning. ATK ATTACK Todd reads the Tech defense. Willie scores through heavy traffic. Anthony ’’Tree” Dickens hits from the outside. When Coach Flinn talks, people listen. Joe Ceresa-S. V.’s own Floor General. Willie shows his power under- neath. Tree concentrates at the fall line. Girls’ Varsity Basketball The Strong Vincent Girls’ Varsity Basketball Team found themselves slightly out-classed in the exception- ally well balanced Metro League this year. First year coach Mr. Grande, inheriting a young and inexper- ienced team, learned the old adage ’’Winning isn’t everything.” Led by Senior guard, four year letter winner, Jean Oligeri, the girls never gave up and exhibited the true spirit of team play. Promising freshman Cyndi Bryson and sophomore Joan Barrett provide the building blocks for the next year’s team. Row I (L to R): S. Walker mgr.. J. Holodnak, M. Colvin, J. Oligeri. Row 2: C. Huff, C. With mostly 10th graders on the unit the steady improvement of the defense and offense was attributed to the strong leadership from the Sophomores. Not ignoring the few Freshmen on this year’s team, they were highly spiritual and showed marked im- provement too. This 9th grade group is expected to form a solid nucleus for next year’s edition. Team plays, discipline, and smart basketball were key notes for this year’s squad. Row I (L to R) M. Smith (Co-Captain), Coach Delsandro, D. Pelton (Co-Captain); Row 2 B. Bennetti, K. Stewart, P. The year 1982 was a rebuilding year for the S.V. Colonel varsity football team, due to heavy losses suffered to graduation. Three factors had a bearing on the team’s performance. With only three starters returning from last years team, this squad was inexperienced. In addition to this, Vincent was the smallest team in the Metro League in the sense of physical size. Finally, a rash of injuries at the skill positions hampered the team throughout the season. In evaluating the teams 1-7 record, these factors should be considered. Team members are to be congratulated for never quitting, even though some of our scores were rather lopsided by halftime. Credit should go to the Captains, Lee Gieger and Tony Pierce, and Co-CaptainS: Matt McCormick, and Mike Schell for holding the team together under some pretty trying conditions.
