I , sg w X c Cindy Carney On August 5, 1979, Strong Vincent lost a very special person, Cindy Carney. Cindy, always with a smile on her face, was full of fun and laughter. Throughout her life she was well known and liked by all. Her qualities and characteristics were portrayed in her active years at S.V. She was an efficient editor of the SPOKESMAN and an ambitious member of the colorguard. Cindy was a friend whose memory will be treasured forever fi jf Leona Rogers was a teacher, a math teacher. Add to that her professionalismg multiply that by all those students whom she taughtg divide that by the 29 years she taught and subtract or take away nothing-for she never did, she only knew how to give. The result equals a dedicated teacher respected and remembered by her colleagues and students. Schools function because of the special relationships between teachers and students. When this relationship works, the great gift of knowledge and learning is given and received. It is this gift that Leona Rogers gave to her students. Those of us who were her colleagues and students remember her, thank her and are grateful that she was here to show her ability, talents, and dedications. Mr. Gauriloff congratulates trophy winner Bill Sandusky. The Strong Vincent Track Team for 1979 posted a 2-3 record at the season's end. This record was a fair one considering that the Colonels were in a rebuilding year. The total roster carried only three seniors, John Gloss, Matt Kohler and Gary Campbell. The team standouts included freshman, Bob Wieczorek in the long distance events and strongmen Bill Sandusky and Ron Haugsdahl in the field events. Good luck in 1980. b N Billups, E. Gibbs, T. Mink. The girls succeeded in setting city records in both track and field competition. Kathy Dey won in the low hurdles, Cathy Ptaskiewicz won in the two mile run, Sharon Fagan the mile run, and Janet Glowacky long jumped for a record length. Both Janet Glowacky and Kathy Dey were very important to the team's success. These two outstanding athletes will be missed next year. Other athletes contributing to the team's success were Patty MacWhiter, Debbie Callista, Rachel George, and Carla Vitale. Each member of the team contributed many hours of hard work and effort that made 1979 a good year in track and field. 1979-1980 was the first year at Strong Vincent for girls' cross country. They had a very good season with four wins and one loss. The SV Majorettes worked long and hard to represent their alma mater both on the field and in their various fund raising endeavors. fAn example was a special SV afghan designed, made, and donated by Mrs. JoAnn Akusj. Led by Captain Linda Akus and Co-Captain Brenda McLaurin, the girls spent many hours perfecting routines and precision which aided the band in its 2nd place performance in the annual band competition. Aided by the double twirler captain Laura Heubel and flag captain Janet Gathers, their performance enhanced the overall effort of the band and provided the audience with a spectacular combination of color, motion, and sound.
