Mr. Mullen has demonstrated his care for students in and out of the classroom. He is always prepared in his daily lessons of grammar and literature. Realizing, that the curriculum of the classroom results in knowledge and the development of skills to be used in future life. While he leads a busy family life, Mr. Mullen has always sought the development of individual student abilities and an active school environment. He participates in school activities as an advisor to the Student Council, Ski-Club, and as coach of our Boy's Golf Team. He is a soft spoken person whose determination, dedication, and example have provided the students of Strong Vincent with a lasting and memorable image of the person we are happy to call—teacher. 4 Mr. Mullen, Mrs. Mullen, and Mary Margaret Our Special Thanks The 1978-1979 SPOKESMAN would not be complete without our special thanks to Mr. Weber and Mrs. Alsheimer. As past advisors they have given years of faithful service. Under their direction and because of their sincere kindness, the yearbook staffs of previous years worked together closely and comfortably. Mr. Weber and Mrs. Alsheimer possess a contagious friendliness and an ability to handle any SPOKESMAN crisis. Their dedication will never be forgotten by past yearbook students who admire them and treasure their friendship. Mrs. Jean Alsheimer Wishing Her Well Mr. James Weber. Just a note to let Miss Rogers know that her presence at Strong Vincent is greatly missed. We all wish her good health and happiness. Miss Leona Rogers 5 Principal Mr. Joseph Gervase has been principal at Strong Vincent for the past four years. Even before then, he was well-known to everyone. He was a teacher here for seventeen years and an assistant principal for nine years. His great school spirit is reflected through the student body. Since his appearance as principal in 1975, he has been trying to develop the quality of our school to include a greater degree of excellence. It is working. To those who know him, he is a nice man with a good knowledge of what’s going on in this school. He works very hard to keep the students and faculty together. It is a very hard task, but he has been doing it for the past four years and will probably do it for more years to come. Many thanks to Mr. Gervase for his allegiance to Strong Vincent. STRONG VINCENT HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPALS Elmer G. Frail 1931-1032 A. J. Nicely 1933-1935 W. Edwin Coon 1935-1940 Harold D. Leberman 1940-1947 Hamilton C. Gillespie 1947-1962 Bertil C. Gustafson 1962-1965 Alfred J. Lubowscki 1965-1975 Joseph Gervase 1975- Assistant Principals This year there is a new face among Strong Vincent's administration. His name is Mr. Joseph Oadaniec. In 1962. he was a math teacher at Strong Vincent. He left in 1973 to be principal at Wayne Middle School. From there he was administrative assistant to the superintendent. Mr. Oadaniec is a graduate of Prep High School. He has a vast knowledge of education with a major in mathematics. When asked if he preferred teaching or being a principal, he said. “Every job offers its own challenges. I like these challenges. I have been satisfied with all my jobs so I can’t really pick a favorite. He is a welcome addition to Strong Vincent High School. Mrs. Mary Alice Schultz has served as a devoted, hardworking member of the Strong Vincent administration for eight years. During this time she has promoted many activities and programs, as well as performing her duties as an assistant principal. Mrs. Schultz returned this year from a well deserved sabbatical, and we on the SPOKESMAN staff would like to welcome her back. Homecoming Candidates Lori Boetger and Matt Laughlin DeeDee Coleman and James Ratcliff This year the election of the Homecoming Queen and her escort was extremely difficult. The votes were close and the honor was given to Kelli Kunkle with escort Greg Morosky. Kelli represented Strong Vincent beautifully at our Homecoming game against Academy. Best wishes to Kelli. Greg, and all who were involved. Karon Sirak and John Corkan Sue Peterman and James Alberico Jean Space and John DeMichael “Homecoming 78” Diedre Coleman and James Ratcliff pose for the camera. Rhea Thomas gazes into Vinnie Barzano's eyes while slow dancing. The 1978-79 Homecoming Dance was held at the Saga Club on 38th Washington Avenue. The dance was from 9 til 1. The music was provided by “Sky’s the Limit” and the theme was “Always and Forever.” It was an enjoyable evening for everyone who attended. Everyone’s appreciation is extended to the Student Council for sponsoring a very special occasion. Danny Kunkel whispers sweet nothings into Sue Erdman's ear. Martha Carrick and Matt Wellejus enjoy watching everyone dance. Cathy Brown tries to dance with her eyes closed. 20 “Always And Forever” Micki Pettit and Greg Starry stop for a quick smile. Billy Lombardozzi lets Chris Mozdy try on his hat. Looks like everyone is keeping themselves entertained. Donna Berry and Fred Vannucci stop for a quick chat. Ron Bennet's date. Kathy Bush is having a real good time. 21 SPOKESMAN Candidates Traditionally, every year the senior homerooms nominate the SPOKESMAN Queen and King candidates. The students involved in selecting the candidates are those who purchased the 1979 yearbook. All those nominated were greatly honored. Strong Vincent students this year proudly elected Lisa Gardner and Mark Postgate to reign as King and Queen. Congratulations to the winners and all nominees. Mike Kohler ◄ One of the best of Sherlock Holmes' adventures, “Hound of the Baskervilles” is set in Victorian England. The play is a spine-chilling mystery with an element of British humor and romance. Sir Henry Baskerville is heir to a mansion on the moor and the curse of the hound of the Baskervilles. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are sent for to solve the mystery of Henry’s dead uncle. Who did it? The butler, the stranger Jack, the convict roaming the moor? And is Sir Henry’s romance with Jack's sister Kathy doomed? Mystery, romance, and the supernatural are intermingled. 25 Glen Rice. Kate Weckesser. Mike Kohler. Bev Irish, John Hall. John Wilson. Jolly, Jolly The 1978-1979 Junior class of Strong Vincent has put forward the qualities of leadership and has displayed their many thoughts and ideas on this year’s Student Council. Their enthusiasm for sports and other school involved activities has proven to be a great asset. The Junior’s involvement in this year’s athletic programs has shown the great potential which will carry Strong Vincent through the coming year. They have found what it means to be an individual in a group, and we hope that they show their many talents, as they will soon be the leaders of our school. Come into my arms. They have brought with them many talents which contribute to organizations, activities, and sports. The freshmen, walking new halls, meeting new people and teachers, were all part of getting used to the atmosphere of Strong Vincent. The team consists of two seniors, Kathy Dey and Marie Hill, two juniors, three sophomores, and four freshmen. The events the girls compete in are uneven parallel bars, balance beam, vault, and floor exercise. Although getting off to a late start in this season, the team and coach got together and made up for lost time. All around competitors are Kathy Dey, Patty Mac- Whirter and Cathy Dunford. Waiting for the rebound. The 1978-1979 girls' varsity basketball team, coached by Ken Kopin started out slowly but improved greatly as the season progressed. Experience was the key with six out of seven players returning from last year’s squad, four of them seniors. The starting five consisted of seniors Laurie Boetger, Janet Glowaky, and Mary Anne Kiehlmeier, junior Michelle Penpeck, and sophomore Sherry Putnam. Ready to help out were reserves Lisa Roderick and Erin Scully. The girls ended their season with a record of five wins and nine losses and will have some rebuilding to do next year. Laurie Boetger shows perfect form in shooting a lay-up. Mary Ann Kiehlmeier raises the S.V. score. Hey! Where's the basketball? Coordination? Sherry Putnam scores under Tech’s defensive pressure. 95 Boys’ Bowling The 1978-79 Boys Bowling Team headed by Mr. De Luca meets every Monday after school from 3:30 to 5:00. The boys form eight 4-man teams and bowl against each other for trophies which go to the top team, top average, and series. Following tradition, the league will have a bowling banquet at the Eagle’s Club to celebrate the end of the season. Bob Fisher’s high average of 180 was a great asset to the team. Much was expected from the team after last year's exciting Metro League cham- pionship. Perhaps this made the season even more disappointing for the players, coaches, and all of the Strong Vincent supporters. The injuries took the greatest toll of all, among the factors of defeat. With many of the S.V. starters hurt, not much could be done to salvage the team’s record. Although the season was rather heart-breaking, not all was lost. This year’s twirlers started early and raised funds in order to buy material to make new uniforms. The finished products nicely complimented the military look of the band. The Captain of the squad. Linda Akus, and Co-Captain, Laura Laird, worked continually to improve and enhance the twirling squad. With the assis- tance of Pam Disque who headed the Flags and Kathy Regan, Captain of Double Twirlers, they did a fine job of shaping the twirling staff. Betty Kraus. Rosemary Collins. The Cafeteria Staff is one of the most vital services at Strong Vincent. They prepare and serve a wide variety of food to over 1,000 people, on a daily basis. Without them many students at Strong Vincent would fail to receive one of the most important meals of the day. Many thanks to the women in the kitchen. C 1 e a n • i n In previous years we have neglected to include a very important staff. Though their hard work is often over looked and taken for granted they deserve much gratitude. Therefore, this year to show our appreciation we have included the cleaning staff. Without their labor and dedication we would immedia- tely notice our great need for them. g Ladies Seated L-R Janet McNerny, Jean Mish Standing Judy Reiger. Kitty Fabrizio. Doris Ellis Strong Vincent’s Janitors are not only dedicated workers, but, they show much concern for the school. Mr. Harry Wagner contributes time and effort through his various duties. Mr. Tony Donatelli put nine consectutive years of service to good use. He often carried his duties beyond the broiler room. He could be found in a classroom or in the cafeteria if needed. His company was enjoyed by everyone. We express our deep appreciation to these fine men.
