The Red and Black is like a game of Chess Chess is above all a game of competition and strategy, teams opposing each other with a single purpose, that of checkmating the other's king. In life, too, opposing forces are at work. School life focuses attention on achieving mastery in human re- lations. Teachers and administrators, like bishops of old, try to instill moral values and develop high ethical character. The students, our kings and queens, are the center of attention. Learning teamwork through classes, clubs, and athletics, they are directed to put their energies and abilities to good purpose and strive only for worthwhile goals.
