In memory of one of the best Harold I Sam Kramer passed away sud denly on Sunday October 30 1955 The loss felt by Strong Vmcent IS d1ff1cult to exp ess ln words Sams fxfty sxx years reflect hardship but also determmatlon and success Orphaned at the age of twelve he galned h1s educatlon by force of wxll workmg hxs way through Erle s Central Hxgh School and then Grove Cxty College Dur mg these years he acqulred a reputatlon as an all around athlete After coachlng ln Ellwood Clty and Brad dock Sam came back to Central Hlgh ln 1929 then becommg head football coach at the new Strong Vmcent High School Here for twenty three years he worked with hls boys sendmg out flghtmg teams and sometlmes champxonshxp teams But champxons or not Sam s boys knew what sportsmanship was all about Sam was generous wlthout gnmg to be seen He almost lrterally never let h1s left hand know what the rlght was domg The depresslon and war years saw ham sendmg money or takmg food to h1s former players and thenr famllxes when txmes weren t so easy But Sam s gener osxty dndn t end w1th hrs pocketbook If he thought a boy could benefxt by a college educa tlon he personally worked to get htm a scholar shlp Havmg earned his own college educat1on m this way he belleved ln athletnc scholarships as an honest means of help He never dld thmgs half way and he deman ed the same hlgh standard from hrs players No one Sam coached got away wxth playmg Just to get a letter He expected hls boys to gxve thenr all Sam was a llvmg example of the thmgs he belxeved m He gave hns all O ll YY W 1 Y ' ' I , . . . - Y - 1 . . . . , I 1 1 1 ' ll ' Y 11 ' 1 , , . .
