Service as used here is defined as performing a helpful act for others. Many codes of ethics have been written which set forth the importance of being helpful to others. Every vocation offers opportunities for service but such opportunities are greater in the professions. Service to others is the very reason for the existence of the teaching profession. A high school teacher, in the course of thirty-five years of teaching, helps in the development of the desirable attributes of five thousand Ameri- can citizens. This is teaching.
