The present edition of the SPOKES- MAN is a record of educational pro- gress in Strong Vincent High School during the year l953. A pictorial and verbal review is offered in three princi- pal categories - classes, athletics and school life. During the years to come We hope that the offerings of the 1953 SPOKES- MAN, so aptly reflected through the Words of our school song, will offer, to students and faculty alike, many last- ing remembrances of happy days well spent. BELL Mathematics Science Science Science For each of you graduating from Strong Vincent, my hope is that you will enjoy a long and richly satisfying life. Each person's lite holds promise of exciting developments but the next fifty years intrigue one with their potential greatness. The telescope at Palomar is giving us knowledge of space. Atomic fission and fusion have indicated tremendous new sources of power to do man's bidding. Many diseases have already been con- trolled and new discoveries may make mankind free of crippling illnesses. Man has learned how to increase his food supply, and better nutrition for all seems a possibility. Civilizations must learn to live in peace with one another. Will this too, be accomplished in your lifetime? I trust that all undergraduates will find their experiences, here at Strong Vincent, both profitable and enjoyable. The edu- cational level of the average American has already passed the eleventh grade. The future demands more and better education for all. America and America's schools will meet the challenge of the future. FRANCES M. BENEDICT LURA wh. BIERS KENNETH A. BLAKE RUTH M, BRAUNGER Enqhsh Oflhopedlc 5 SCi9f1C9 Home Economics RALPH A. This depends upon the ability and the worthiness ot all individuals to co-operate, to overcome prejudices, to appreciate the contributions of our society, oi other individuals and groups, and to make contributions of his own. Strong Vincent High School is the only senior high in Erie Whose name has historic significance. Colonel Strong Vincent, a native of Erie, was a real hero, a man of bravery and great courage, who, fighting against great odds in the Civil War, showed his real Worth. The Vincent family coat of arms with its slogan is the seal of our school, because the family permitted its use: Virtue non viribus vincent, by valor or courage, not by physical strength they shall conquer-let us ALFRED 1, LUBQWICKI live up to this thought always. PEARCE Home Nursing Art, Spokesman Counseling has been defined as a discussion or conference between an individual with problems and an older person who attempts to help solve them. The conference may be sought by the stu: dent when he feels in need of advice or guidance. On the other hand, the counselor may seek an in- terview with the student in order to study his per- sonality, to discover what his problems may be, and to help him formulate and understand his own abilities and objectives. The ultimate aim of all worth while guidance is to develop in the individual the technique of self-guidance. Arthur Weibel, Inez Mercer, Counselors INEZ M. MERCER Counselor Counselor WILLIAM W. SEEING DOUBLE I. Mozdy and I. Mozdy BACK DIVE B. Poulson SWIMMING The Strong Vincent Swimming Team capped off a very successful season by placing second in the State swimming meet held in State College. For the seventh consecutive time our swimmers came through with the City Championship. The powerful Acade- my team, which was our principal threat, was defeated in our first encounter by 44 to 31. In the second meet, Academy held us to a 37Vz - 37 V2 tie. lt is interesting to note that we did not lose any dual meets throughout the season. Our swimmers followed up the winning of the City Champion- ship by annexing the District lU title. Throughout the season our team was characterized by well-balanced strength rather than by outstanding individual performers. The outstanding performers who carried the burden of the schedule were: I. Rickloff, I. Mozdy, I. Mozdy, B. Poulson, I. Brownlie, G. Horn, K. Pifer, R. Sigmond, K. Gerbracht, D. Zurn. The scheduling and organization of meets were done by student manager, H. Doll. Mr. B. Gustavson served as faculty manager. The captain, who piloted the 1953 team, was G. Horn. To Mr. Weibel, our coach, we extend appreciation for having once again raised the flag of victory on the Strong Vincent mast. 64 SWIMMING DATE OPPONENT VINCENT I an. 8 Prep ............,....... - .... - ,................ 15 6 0 Ian. 12 Tech ....,.....,...... ......,.....,.. 2 1 54 Ian. 15 Academy ....... .......... .... 3 1 44 Ian. 22 East ......,..... ............... l 9 56 Ian. 26 Prep .....,....., ............... 1 1 64 Feb. 2 Tech .....,,.,.,..,......... ........... 18 56 Feb. 5 Academy ...,.... ......,....... 3 7 V2 37 IA Feb. 12 East ......,.................................. - ..... 17 58 District Meet, Vincent First-50 points. BASEBALL Coach Iohn Krkoska faced the difficult task in 1952 of rebuilding practic- ally our entire baseball team with green material. I Willie Wainwright, lst baseman, Arnold DeMichele, catcher, Louis Leone and Iohn Arnone, pitchers, and Eric Campbell, outfielder, were the only letter- rnen left to form a nucleus for the l952 team. A local sportswriter classified the team as speedy, and excellent in offen- sive spirit, with plenty of hustle. Much credit must be accorded to Faculty Manager H. N. Scott and Stu- dent Manager W. Cooper for their tireless efforts to perfect our organization. Loyal supporters were thrilled by loe Riazzi's two hitter in the opening game against Academy at Ainsworth Field. Eric Campbell's long double to right center scored Reno Strand from 2nd to bring in the winning run. Nick DiNicola scored the winning run ini'-the Prep game. There were many other thrilling highpoints, but it wouldn't be fair to give all the credit to one man. Every player was doing his best for the team. Season results show two wins, one tie, and five losses. The fine coaching of Mr. Krkoska and the spirit of his scrappy young team should show in the box scores of 1953. First Base W. Wainwright N. Preparing a yearbook for publication is a job that takes the co-operation of every per- son on tho staff. lt is a task that requires hard work, but one that brings much satis- faction when the finished product is distri- buted to the student body. The editorial staff of this year's Spokes- man consisted of twenty-four students. The staff was divided into seven departments: senior lay-outs, undergraduate lay-outs, sports, art, write-ups, typing, and filing. On the opposite page are pictured the salesman, the business department, and the photographic department of the Spokesman. The salesman and business department did much to further the sale of the yearbook. Although many stumbling blocks were en- countered throughout the year in Spokesman class, every member of the staff, upon read- ing this book, feels that he has done his share in making the yearbook a success. s Siaff BUSINESS AIDES for the Spokesmon Stuff are I.
