This and Erie Acad- emy, built in 1819 at Ninth and Peach Streets, were the only schools for almost twenty years. ln 1848, the small, in- significant schools that had risen all over the city were combined into two larger buildings, and education toolc on a high- er ranlr in grade and influence. The Board of Control of 1866 con- solidated the higher classes of schools, from which grew our present Strong Vincent. ln that year Erie High School was opened at Seventh and Holland but later was transferred to Tenth and Sassafras. The need for better schools in 1919 caused Erie High to be divided: Academy to serve South Erie, and Cen- tral for the remaining part of the city. Eleven years later, in 1930, our new modern school replaced old Central High. Since its organization, Strong Vincent High has made it easy for a pupil to rise, and difficult to fall. I .
