Youth comes here seelcing opportunities to add to their knowledge and to receive direction in all areas of living. As the way of life becomes more complex, our cuniculum must be changed and expanded. The present breadth of the curriculum of our school is clearly indicated in the pages that follow. ARTHUR WEIBEL On Friday, December 9, 1949, the Pennsylvania State Association of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation pre- sented its highest award to Arthur Weibel, 'swimming mentor, Civics teacher, and part-time consultant at Vincent. The lcey and certificate represent meri- torious service in the lield of physical education and health. Mr. Weibel is noted throughout the state for his champion swimming teams, and throughout the country for his ability as an outstanding coach. The team, this year, took the regional title, the district title for the fourth con- secutive time, and has had thirty-four straight wins, a great record, indeed. JK :- uxn,.n'::::x.i.uo H carl 3 ' ,i '53 cvtww VICTOR RAYMOND Victor Raymond, a 19-1 student, won the 1949 contest lor his prize winning essay entitled, Why Not Hire the Physically Handicapped. Each year, the Pennsylvania State Employment office has sponsored these contests to bring before the pubIic's eye the need for hiring those people with an inlirmity. By having these contests, it has helped to stimulate the necessity of employment for these people. TESSIE DUNDON Tessie, musical commedienne, won the tell-auditions at WICU, and the Millcreelt Kiwanis audition held at Strong Vincent. As a result, she was awarded a trip to New York City to appear on the Ted Mack Original Amateur Hour Show. Tessie has ap- peared on thirty benefit shows, four television programs, and in Life Maga- zine. l i 1 0 DR. JOHN HICKEY Dr. John Hickey is the recently appointed Superintendent ol Erie Schools. He attended Wilson Junior High School and was graduated from Academy High School, Later he received his B. S. degree from Edinboro State Teachers College, and his M. A. and Ph. D. degrees from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Hickey has constantly kept pace with new AMERICAN LEGION MEDAL Honor-worthy of consideration and respect. Courage-meeting danger or op- Fosition with calmness and irmness. Service-performing a task in the interest of others. Leadership-having uidance and the qualities of a Teader. Scholorshipwmaintaining a high standard in learning and educa- tion. Americanism - having American spirit and allegiance to one's country and flag. Mead Payne, Anne Frlds Every ear the Presque Isle Chapter of the D. A. R. presents its Good Citizenship Medal to a ninth grade boy and girl. These students must be outstanding in Honor, Service, Courage, Leader- ship, and Scholarship, the ideals that the society holds most worthy. The best of luck, Dr. John Hickey, in your new job. TOM BUEL Tom Buel was selected bythe Booster Club as the out- standing player oi the year. He played an end for three years and was elected captain in his senior year. The club unanimously chose Tom because of his ability as a player, his co-operative attitude toward team-mates, and physical and moral support toward the team. ROBERT FOGLE g Bob Fogle, track and football ace, was awarded the Jewish Veterans Trophy, September 93, 1949, for his out' standing performances on the cinderways. Bob's specialties were the 900 Yard Dash, which he ran in 93.5 seconds, and the low hurdles in 93.9 seconds. ln 1949, he tied the record at the City Track Meet in the 100 Yard Dash with a run ol 10 seconds llat. 11 Y , AQ- DR. LEROY BARBER Leroy E. Garber a member of the Vincent mathematics deparfrrient -- -er -.ward-sd a Doctur of Education degree at the Feb-.it .-, i.ini-fc-sity of Pittsburgh convocation. He has completed i,is :gr-I ti.. -f work in the fields of secondary education and adn . i sa'-: -cn. Dr. Ssrber received his :iploma from Erie East in 1998, ' B. b ii Education degree from Edinboro State Teachers Lvl' ge 2, 1033, and a Master of Education degree from the t.lr.iveesity of Pittsburgh in 1941. ln addition, he has taken graduate v--orl. at the -,i'ii'feis:ty of Southern California, and hc has attended the Eazxern Coaching Clinic conducted by Clair Bee of Long l rind University. The later experir -.e -.fvas put to good use during the basketball season of 19-time ' ', whcn he coached the Vincent Varsity to a shared title with Prep. He retired from coaching et the end of that season, content to rest on his laurels. Dr. Barber started hi. teaching career at Tech l-ligh in 1937, he was transferred to Roosevelt Junior Hi h in 1949, and later became a memfyzr of the Vincent facuilty. His t'ta hing duties were interrupted for the two year geriud 194, 45, during which time he saw service in the ield Artillery. AUDREY MEHNE Audrey Mehne, Y-Teen Presi- dent and champion twirler, was elected the president of the Tri- Council last fall. The Tri-Council is composed of officers from the cabinets of the various high schools in this district, and strives for direct- ing club activities and work for the spirit of friendliness and co-opera- tion among girls. Long active in Y-Teens, Audrey attended the Ysleen conference last summer held at Camp Forty SALLY GRIESBACH Sally Griesbach was the highest scorer in the school bowling league. Although she had bowled only one year, she was elected captain of the Colonels team this year. Her average was 127, with Q00 the highest game bowled. Acres, and she also attended the winter conference held at Brad- ford, Pennsylvania. I 1 2 A lr., . .3-fix KEREN SCHLURAFF At the City Recreation Girls' Swimming Meet, Keren Schluraff was awarded one of three trophies, given on basis of ability, leadership, and sportsmanship. In her first parti- cipation at this meet, Keren took first place in diving, second in freestyle, and was one of the four girls in the relay which broke the previous record. CROSS COUNTRY, a fall sport of short duration, primarily to train runners for mile and relay teams, is an endurance run over rough and hilly terrain. Each school lays out its own course and the one at Vincent is one of the toughest courses in the city, BASKETBALL is a highly organized team sport limited in the number of players who are specially trained in the liner skills of the game. The Band, twirlers, cheerleaders and rallies combined, promote great enthusiasm among our team boostcrs. WATER POLO Water Polo: Mr. McCarthy, T. Blasco, Mr. Weibel. WATER POLO, an endurance contest in the water, is comparable to basketball. Golf: Mr. Schenck. GOLF Wrestling: Mr. Scott, A. Black, Mr. Verga WRESTLING is an individual sport, with groupings by size and weight. A wrestler must put in many hours of conditioning and exercise to main- tain the weight classification in which he wrestles. For being overweight he may be required to forfeit his match. SWIMMING is an individual sport in which each participant is trained in a special event. These individual swimmers are then coordinated into team relays giving a specialized cooperative group of athletes. TRACK is a combination of field and track events to make up a program of speed, agility and accuracy. It trains in skills of speed, strength and muscular coordination of a high degree, building a group of individuals into an organized team of specialists. GIRLS INTRAMURAL SPORTS: This program covers a variety of four- teen individual and team sports.
