GILLESPIE PRINCIPAL Dear Friend o' Vincent: This has been a year like most other yearsxups and downs. Smooth sailing for awhile, then suddenly a reverse. But in the midst of even our most disheartening setbacks we can certainly be happy about the honors that have come to an unusually high number of our teachers and students. Honors, not just bestowed indeed notxnor honors sought for, but honors justly earned and mod- estly accepted. The Spokesman is indeed proud of the people who appear the next few pages. Were all proud of themxand glad bask in their reflected glory. As you look throu h year so glitteri on that W ' g the lcl ng? No? applaud th e may onor pages, can you recall another . Neither can we. So join us while we ern, won 't you? Jo. fi K' , 4--A MISS MABEL STUDEBAKER To Miss Mabel Studebaker has come the highest honor to which a teacher in the United States may aspire-thatof the Presidency of the National Education Association. Miss Studebaker whose personal charm and teaching ability are by now a by-word among educators the nation over, has always been active in teacher affairs. She has held many offices in local and national organizations. Two years ago Miss Studebaker was honored in being chosen by the N. E. A. as one of three Americans to be sent to Eng- land to study educational problems in that country. The list of the offices Miss Studebaker has held, and the things she has done are indeed an impressive, but too long to be re- corded here. Of all the titles she has held, the one which means most to her is-MABEL STUDEBAKER, BIOLOGY TEACHER, STRONG VINCENT HIGH SCHOOL, ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA. She is equally active in educational circles outside the school itself. She has held the following offices in the Erie Teachers Association: Recording Secretary, Corresponding Secretary, and President, all for two year terms. She has not confined her activities to local affairs but has been Eastern Vice'President of the National League of Teachers Organizations for four years. This year she has been elected President of this nation-wide organ- ization, a great honor, indeed. Strong Umcent High School 1335 WEST BTH ST. HAMILTON D. GILLESPIE PRINCIPAL Dear Friend o' Vincent: As l loolc baclc over the past athletic season l can still hear the cheers and the groans, the wild elatiom and the deep despair. That about sums up the seasozn itselfxwins and losses. 4 Qnsthe whole, lguess yould call 7948-49 fair-to-middling. We won the city trophy in baseball and swimmingf the city and dis- trict crowns in cross-country, but ended up midway in football and baslcetball. We lost some heartbrealfers too, to wit, the Tech game. But what's a loss or twoXit's the playing that counts, and believe me when any team played Vincent, they lcnew they were playing a real team. i Thats usxthe Fighting Colonelsl Jo. Angra La Furia 78 Chuck Haise Jim Lipinski Ed Portzg Vinnie Obmann Sam Pizzo Neal Zimmerman Bob De Fonzo HBCU' Fogle 79 Don Zonno BASEBALL A toast to the winers, the brave and the strong, And a toast to the boys who helped vict'ry along. Three cheers for our players who made our team rise- 'Twas well worth their efforts-they brought home fiist prize. A toast to our captain who led us to fame, Our own King of Swat -Cianflocco, his name. The best batting average-the best to be found, The city s best player, with friends all around. And out in left field Ange LaFuria stands, Heis quiet and serious with powerful hands, He s great on the defense, he's quick in a pinch, With Ange as a fielder, our prize was a cinch. And next for a toast is a second base man, Whose running for homers gave joy to each fan. He really is fury when he starts to run, Without Sammy Pizzo, we'd never have won. Bill Clark is the next one we're privileged to toast, His batting is good, but he is known most For that wonderful pitching that was right in line, An all-around player, Bill's sure doing fine. And here's to Bob Fogle, who helped save our place, Gainst Wan'iors and Lions when he set the pace. With his timely homeruns, he gave us the lead, His humor and action are just what we need. Don Zonna comes next in our toast to the team, His thoughts are all baseball, he never lacks steam. He's eager and swift, alert in the game, Though quiet and peaceful, he brought our team fame. Chuc Haise is the player whose catching you know, He's full of the spirit-just watch his fame grow, For he will be with us as catcher once more, We know he'll keep working to give us top score. Jimmy Lipinski next, blue-eyed and shy, As pitcher or fielder, a wonderful guy. He worked very hard and we really are proud, To toast our ace pitcher before any crowd. In beating the Hillto , Glenn Grubbs, was our boy, Whose fine work in battin sure Filled us with joy. He's quiet and solemn with his thoughts on the game, As baseman on first, he spread far our fame. The next little man you have all seen around, For a good show when playin , no better is found. Or if you want joking while pslaying a game, Then our boy, LeRoy Smith, will give you his na me. The player whose pitching first made our team win, Was Ed Portz, ,the fellow we're now bringing in. He always is found in the ri ht place and time, Just full of the spirit that mage our team climb. Our mascot, our fielder, is next for a toast, A shock of red hair is what we know most. He's Hash in defense, he's pep y with zest, Tom Ponsflord as hitter ranks high with the best. The quiet DeFonzo who plays second base, Is filled with excitement as he takes his Elace. And we're glad to toast Bob and give im our thanks, For help putting our team in lead of the ranks. Then Zimmerman pitched in a number of games, And helped his good teammates stick to eir aims. Regardless of dan er, he was there And even in coacshing he helped do his share. This promising catcher sure makes the girls sigh, lf you don't believe me, just watch him go by. Of course Obmann is just whombwe mean, And what ' o next ear remains to e seen.
