57 mzhzkfrafzbn MERTON L. SMITH SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS JAMES RICHARDS PRINCIPAL M, Ed, University of Maine Teaches Math and Science THERE ARE NO SUBSTITUTES One thought that I would like to offer to you as you end the first step in your formal education and strike out on your own, is a warning that the world does not owe you a living. There is a danger these days that you may get some wrong ideas about life, and learn of your mistakes too late. Because of the various Government programs offering cradle- to-grave help for every one, you might decide that life was pretty easy. All you need to do is to sit back and whatever you desire would be handed to you on a silver platter. This is not so. These are fast-changing times, but some things in life never change. There are no substitutes for such qualities as ambition, industry, self-reliance and self-discipline. These were the qualities possessed by those who founded our great nation. The benefits we enjoy today were the products of these qualities. If we abandon these, our nation would soon fall into a state of mediocrity. .The world owes no one a living, Seniors. What you enjoy today was brought about by the toil and effort of those who came before. What you enjoy in life and pass on to those who come after you depends upon how willing you are to strive in a similar manner. No government can do for you what you can do for yourself - if you have the ambition. Select a worthy goal and stride toward it with great determination. ....j. Superintendent of Schools To the Seniors: This year Strong is losing more than a senior class. With the opening of the new school imminent and our last graduation from Strong High School rapidly approaching, the town faces quite a change. The arguments, pro and con, about this change will go on for years. As you seniors contemplate your futures Qand I hope you willy, learn a lesson from the dilemma of your town. What appears to be progress may be regression in disguise: on the other hand, an apparent step to the rear might greatly enhance your forward movement. Where ever you go, which ever way: go in peace - with yourself and the world. Principal Q QIYINO
