SMITH SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS JAMES RICHARDS PRINCIPAL M, Ed, University of Maine Teaches Math and Science THERE ARE NO SUBSTITUTES One thought that I would like to offer to you as you end the first step in your formal education and strike out on your own, is a warning that the world does not owe you a living. There is a danger these days that you may get some wrong ideas about life, and learn of your mistakes too late. Because of the various Government programs offering cradle- to-grave help for every one, you might decide that life was pretty easy. All you need to do is to sit back and whatever you desire would be handed to you on a silver platter. This is not so. These are fast-changing times, but some things in life never change. There are no substitutes for such qualities as ambition, industry, self-reliance and self-discipline. These were the qualities possessed by those who founded our great nation. The benefits we enjoy today were the products of these qualities. If we abandon these, our nation would soon fall into a state of mediocrity. .The world owes no one a living, Seniors. What you enjoy today was brought about by the toil and effort of those who came before. What you enjoy in life and pass on to those who come after you depends upon how willing you are to strive in a similar manner. No government can do for you what you can do for yourself - if you have the ambition. Select a worthy goal and stride toward it with great determination. ....j. Superintendent of Schools To the Seniors: This year Strong is losing more than a senior class. With the opening of the new school imminent and our last graduation from Strong High School rapidly approaching, the town faces quite a change. The arguments, pro and con, about this change will go on for years. As you seniors contemplate your futures Qand I hope you willy, learn a lesson from the dilemma of your town. What appears to be progress may be regression in disguise: on the other hand, an apparent step to the rear might greatly enhance your forward movement. Where ever you go, which ever way: go in peace - with yourself and the world. Principal Q QIYINO GCUQY MR. Ezferary HOW THE OSTRICH GOT ITS LONG NECK Many years ago in distant Africa, the various animals were gathering in a large field for their celebration of Halloween. It was a warm night and even though cool breezes were blowing from the forest, all the animals were sweltering inside their costumes. The elephants had cleverly disguised themselves as lions and the lions had just as cleverly disguised themselves as elephants. The zebras had managed to re- semble ghosts by covering their black stripes with chalk. So far the most original costume to appear was a witch, which in real life was a giraffe. Most of the other animals had arrived, but Oscar Ostrich had yet to appear. Poor Oscar! The best costume he could come up with was a striped clown outfit, with baggy pants held up with polka-dotted su- spenders, and a wide full collar that en- hanced his short, stubby neck. Finally Oscar got enough courage to go to the meeting place. He crept from bush to bush, not wanting to be seen. At last he got up behind his friends who were waiting impatiently for him. He stepped on a branch, which made a loud snap. The giraffe, which, you remember, was dressed as a witch, turned around quickly in fright. Oscar took one look at the strange-looking witch and ran into the woods. He couldn't run very fast, you understand, because his baggy pants kept catching on the bushes. He ran for the nearest hole and once there jammed his head into it. He stood in this awkward position for several minutes shaking like a leaf in fright. Oscar finally calmed down and since he couldn't hear any frightening noises, he decided to take a look around. But, what is this? His head seemed to be stuck. Well, that was certainly funny! He had used that hole many times when he was scared, but this was the first time he had become stuck. Why? Then it dawned on him. Of course, that full clown's collar was holding him in. ln his immense fright he had forced the collar in and now it didn't want to come out! . It was in this embarrassing situation that his friends found him a few minutes later. At once they sensed his predicament. The elephants rushed to the pond to get water, which they squirted at the hole in an attempt to loosen the dirt. The only thing they accomplished was drenching the poor ostrich. The lions thought they would dig around the hole to make it larger. The result of that project was that they accidently clawed Oscar in the neck. No other ideas could be thought of until the giraffe said, I scared him so that he ran in there so why can't l scare him out? This plan went into rapid execution. The lion swiftly dug a hole not far from Oscar's hole and several mice were hired to make a short tunnel from one hole to the other. Once this was done the giraffe stuck his head, which still had the witch mask on, into the hole. Oscar took one look at the witch's face and struggled to get away. He pulled and strained, but the result was very unfortunate. His neck started to stretch, and it stretched and stretched. Finally he summed up all his energy and gave one great pull as a last resort. His head came out with this mighty pull but his neck had been permanently stretched out of shape. So from that day ostriches have always had long necks. Ann Gage WHY BIRDS HAVE NO TEETH Once upon a time, when the world was young, a family of crows lived in a mag- nificent mehogany tree. Of all the vain creatures in the world the crows were by far the most vain. The crows, like all birds of that time, had teeth. Through these teeth the crows could whistle the most beautiful and intricate melodies ever heard. Instead of being humble about their beauti- ful music, the crows constantly boasted from high in their nest in the mahogany tree. This went on for years and years and as the crows multiplied, the rest of the birds gradually were pushed out of the forest and only the crows were left. This fact was brought to the attention of King Linus III, the ruling lion, by his com- plaining subjects. Your Majesty, said Willy the giraffe, on behalf of my fellow inhabitants of this forest, I beg you to do something about those crows. Yes, interrupted Herman, the bear, those crows make so much noise whistling and shouting that I get mixed up. Last night I thought I was on the path to the huckleberry bush and I ended up in the river. Hmmm, said the king in a gentle roar, perhaps we should consult Mr. Owl. Mr. Owl, what would you do? Since the crows whistle with their teeth, why not remove their teeth? Certainly! everyone shouted and King Linus called upon the royal wizard for the job. The royal wizard said a few words and suddenly quiet reigned over the forest. Un- fortunately the wizard had removed the teeth of all the birds so that none of them could whistle, but he remedied this by giving the birds the most beautiful singing voices. But the vain crow was given nothing but a hoarse caw and that is why birds have no teeth. Suzanne Carlisle HOW THE RATTLESNAKE GOT ITS RATTLES When Roger Rattlesnake was small he ate most of the time. His mother thought he was eating too much and he was so much overweight he might split his skin before the one underneath had time to grow large enough to be used as an outer skin. Mrs. Rattlesnake decided she had to do something to control the amount of food her son ate. After many hours of thought she decided to tie some rattles around his neck so she could tell when he was going to eat. When she heard the rattles clanging, she could find him and control the amount of food he ate each day. The first day she tried tying the rattles around his neck but he lost them. Mrs. Rattlesnake was so disgusted with Roger for losing the rattles she made him some more and made him eat them. The rattles stayed in his tail and when he struck at his prey they would rattle. She was so pleased the rattles worked she made some more for the other chil- dren to eat so she could tell where they were also. Ever since then rattlesnakes have had rattles. Margaret Berry HOW THE PORCUPINE GOT ITS QUILLS Long ago in Africa on the Sahara Dessert there lived a porcupine. All the other ani- mals called him Peter. The porcupines didn't have any quills, so they didn't have any way to protect themselves. It was almost Easter and all the animals were buying new suits. Peter wanted one but he didn't have any money. One hot, sunny day Peter went looking for a new suit. He came upon a beautiful red suit with orange polka dots. He said, Oh, myl How beautiful! But I have no money. He glanced around him. There was no one in sight. I know, he said, I'1l steal it. No one will know it. So he grabbed the suit and ran out, hoping no one saw him. Just then, the clerk saw him and said, Hey, come back here with that suit. Peter ran and ran. But just then, smack. He ran right into a hugh cactus plant. Poor Peter! He was covered from head to foot with quills and couldn't get them out. Peter didn't have a very happy Easter that year, but he learned his lesson. So from that very day, all porcupines have quills. Debbie Ladd There was a young sailor named Skip Who sailed on the U.S.S. Ship 'Til a beautiful Wave Sent him to his grave But he really enjoyed the trip. jfe Wussuf Wns CII? Our yearbook gets it's name from two Indian words, mussul unsquit, which means Sandy River. Only a poet can describe the wonders of our river, and Henry W. Scamman does best in the following poem: THE RIVER Down in the Sandy's rocky bed There lies a quiet pool, Where, as a lad, I used to swim With other boys from school. How little did Irealize then, That when I'd older grown, I would be coming back again With children of my own. Now when the youngsters all insist, I take them for a swim, We tread the same old woodland path, Where once I walked with Jim. ' And as the young folks splash and shout, Filled with equatic joy, I sit upon a rock and think Of when I was a boy. The river really has not changed, As far as I can seeg The changes that have come about Have taken place in me. ZZ 0000 The little leap and foam There, just above the pool, The waters are as crystal clear As when I was in school. Tall, graceful birches line the And if one looks between, banks , A mountain lifting towards the sky Is plainly to be seen. I hope a hundred years from now, The river, flowing free, Will mean as much to other boys As it has meant to me. And when their books are put one side, And they are freed from school, May they, too, find what once Beside this lovely pool. I found Henry W.
