A Message From The Principal To the class of 1957: There is an old story about a band of gold. It is not the gold bracelet nor the gold ring of which you may be thinking. In fact, it is not made of gold and it is not even a band. What is this Band of Gold ? It is something which you carry with you at all times. It. is,a special talent in some held or another. In Europe many of the parents hon- estly believe that their sons are born with this Gold Band and they wait anxiously for these children to grow to the age where they can deter- mine where his special talents lie. Sometimes a person finds his band-of gold in the medical pro- fession and becomes one of our best doctors, or it might be in the field of law, or music, or cooking, or' mathematics, or in a thousand other fields which you might name. To you parents: In 1870 about 16,000 students graduated from High School and in 1920 approximately 311,000 graduated from High School. These people prob- ably were the Cream of the Crop, and this education gave them about the same advantage as a college degree would give today. This year nearly 1,500,000 will graduate. Because of this large number of High School graduates, employers are choosing the graduates in preference to the non- , -,r . f- - -...-.-,n,,, Surely there is something which you can do better than anything else. If this natural or special talent of yours is in a necessary and useful Held, then it is up to you to develop it to the fullest extent. If a person needs to have his automobile repaired, he seeks the best mechanic available, if he wants his house wired, he will obtain the best electrician, or if his television ceases to function, he will seek the best repairman. These people are seldom without work. With these thoughts in mind, find your band of gold. Be the best of whatever you are and do the best in whatever you do. Good luck to all of you. graduates. This means that a person needs at least a High School education to enter into com- petition in the world today. You, as parents of these students, have done well in helping them through this phase of their educa- tion. Do not let them stop at the dead-end jobs but encourage them to learn various trades, or to study for the various professions. is is 90
