Road toad striker, here! Raffle! Raffle! LT Schofield Functioning as a unit the Operations Department acts as the eyes and ears of the ship. The pace is frantic and demands a team effort by a number of highly trained men. Watches must be stood, typewriters pound out schedules, equip- ment fails and must be repaired. During both routine at-sea periods and hazard- ous night steaming exercises the men in the Combat Information Center sit tire- lessly over their radar scopes to keep the Captain continuously informed of the rapidly changing and sometimes danger- ous situation. Without the Radiomen's twenty-four hour vigilance the ship could neither listen nor speak to other units for the coordination and details of STRONG's varied mission areas. On the Bridge the Quartermasters keep a written minute-by-minute account of the ship's position, weather conditions, and changes in the formation or ship's maneuvering. During periods of modified radio silence, the Captain depends solely on the eagle eyes of the Signalmen to pass critical message traffic to and from other units in company. In the Ship's Office the men are re- sponsible for processing the awesome amount of correspondence generated by a ship this size. The Electronics Technicians, for- tunately, are a hard working and talented bunch who are able to fix most any equipment that a sailor is capable of breaking. All of the above-mentioned jobs as well as the Postal and Medical affairs are closely monitored and supervised by the Operations Officer, who spends the ma- jority of his day raffling through pertinent pubs and instructions.
