Americans are increasing their efforts to eliminate dependence on foreign powers for their energy. Solar energy may be one answer but for many years man has relied on the wind as a source of economical utility. Just as the windmill is a symbol of power and unique pride in South Texas, so have been the Seniors of 1975 to Stroman High School. They have broken old traditions and set new challenges for those who follow. It is to these Raiders we proudly dedicate this yearbook. Scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind, Smiles we gave to one another of the way we were. Can it be that it was all so simple then or has time Rewritten every line. lf we had the chance to do it all again, Tell me would we??? Could we??? Memories may be beautiful and yet, What's too painful to remember We simply choose to forget. So its the laughter, we will remember Whenever we remember the way we were. The Way We Were. H 1 .5 The Raider Dream Come True The dream of all those who care for troman High came true Friday night ovember 15, 1974. This date will go own in history as Stroman's greatest ight. With a group of determined aiders led by 8 men who remem- ered too much suffering and too uch pain, the Blue physically whip- ed with no pity the Stingarees from ideline to sideline. A gallant Stroman offensive line ed by Charles Mitscherling, James oodburn, Joel Gonzales, Kyle Mar- 'n, Shelby Caraway, Jess Jarratt and icky Cartwright opened the holes for uper back David Johnson as he con- inually ripped the Stings for huge hunks of yardage. Johnson, the most rolific ground gainer in the city's his- ry with 1,309 yards this season, put e Big Blue on the Memorial Stadium oreboard with 9:53 left in the con- st on a 10 yard scamper around left nd deadlocking the score at 6-6. Then with the record overflow owd of 11,058 looking on, David lit the uprights with the winning oint. Victoria had scored earlier on a 1 yard pass from David Garcia to evin Mobley. However the extra int failed. The victory over the Stingarees ave the Raiders their first winning Raiders, Ricebirds Loc El Campo, Texas was no place for e faint at heart on Friday night ctober 26, 1974 as the Stroman iders and the El Campo Ricebirds tit on in high style. When the blood d receded the gladiators found the ena clock read RAIDERS 14, EL MPO 14. A tremendous second half come- ck by Stroman prevented a disaster the Raiders found themselves down -0 at halftime. Stroman roared ck as Horace Walton plunged over om the 1-yard line after Donald ompson recovered a Ricebird fum- e at their 27-yard line. The second Raider score came on next Raider possession - a 40- rd run by Robert Walker on a rev- e and a 14-yard scamper by John- n highlighted the 68-yard drive. season since 1969 and the second victorious campaign in school history. The No. 1 Blue finished the year at 4-3-3 for the season and 2-2-2 in Dis- trict 25-AAAA play. The Stingarees kicked a 32 yard field goal with 4:43 remaining. How- ever the kick was called back due to illegal procedure. Because ofthe delayed call some Stingaree fans have said doubtful things about the coll. But the fact is if it had not been for the alertness and knowledge of the game shown by Wayne Stewart, David Meek and Kyle McClain the official would have backed down from his call which he knew he made correctly. The call resulted because the Stingaree center snapped the ball before the whistle blew for the ball to be put in play. The whistle blew dur- ing the actual field goal attempt and the recognition of this by the heads-up Raiders resulted in the referee finally throwing his flag. Much has to be said about a tre- mendous Raider defense which contin- ually repelled Victoria. Although the Sting's fine receiver Kevin Mobley did rack up some impressive statistics and David Garcia threw the ball well, the fact remains the Stingarees managed only 6 points. This was due to undying k Up in 14-14 Death Grasp Johnson got the six points on a nifty nine-yard run. He recovered a good block by Walton and cut to the out- side on a pro-style move. This tied the score with 4:45 left in the third quar- ter. After being scored on twice in the first half, the Raider defense became ferocious and shut down El Campo showing no mercy. Tremendous lead- ership by Stewart along with greatly inspired play by Thompson, David Meek, Terry Tilmon, Benard Zarasky, David Garcia and Kenny Williams Zhowed people what the Raiders can o. The Raider offense played well with David Johnson going 119 yards in 19 carries. His inspired play fired up the offense and the line and backs all blocked super in the second half. leadership by Wayne Stewart, David Meek, Donald Thompson and others. Richard Flores, John Green, Terry Till- man and Robert Walker all played outstanding hard-nose games and they deserve a lot of credit, which was not reported in the Victoria Advocate. All year the Raider defense has shown true character and much of this is due to fine coaching by Coach Thiele. The Raider offensive line really got it together and repeatedly blew the Stingarees off the ball. The real heart of these men came out in the final two games and they performed with great inspiration. Coach Oswalt is the offen- sive line coach who teaches good techniques to these men in the trenches. ln the offensive backfield not enough can be said about the great blocking of Horace Walton. All year with consistent action, Walton has blocked with fine technique and emo- tion. Kenny Williams also made some key runs Friday night and he too blocked well. David Johnson: Well! he does it all. He has the moves, speed and toughness required to be great and that is what he is. It will be a long time before this city will see another David Johnson. Eddie Miller displayed fine courage as he played Raiders and Crabs With homecoming spirit in heart the Raiders played host to the Calhoun Sondcrabs in our second district encounter. The 7-7 deadlock leaves Stroman a 0-1-1 mark in district play and a 2-2-2 ledger for the season. The boisterous fans saw a furious defensive battle Friday night which left the score 0-0 as the teams left the field for the halftime break. The second half was a heart- breaker for the hometown crowd. It didn't seem so at first as Stroman's offense began to click and achieved a drive. A fine 20 yard run by Horace after being sick all week and he did a good iob. Coach Dworsky inspires these good backs to put on a show. The Raiders truly earned the victory as they went out on the field with their minds made up that Stroman would not be defeated this year. The charac- ter and skill displayed by these 1974 Raiders had never been matched and it will never be outdone. l would like to say that we did it for all those who cared, all those who believed, all those who prayed, all those who had seen too much suffering and too much pain. Truly these Raiders and the class of '75 who never gave up on us are NUMBER ONE. This day, November 15, 1974 will never be forgotten in the hearts of Raiders, especially the two NUMBER ONE RAIDERS, Coach Mike Howell and Mr. Ted Reed. GAME AT A GLANCE Stroman Victoria First downs 16 12 Yards rushing 323 110 Yards passing 0 220 Passes 0-10-2 9-21-1 Punts 4-36.5 6-35.8 Fumbles - lost 5-1 2-1 Penalties - yards 3-25 6-58 in Deadlock Walton set up the 1 yard scoring plunge by the Raider quarterback. Johnson's extra point made it 7-0 Stroman. Then disaster struckl James Barnes' kickoff landed in the arms of Calhoun's Earl Leonard who returned it for Sandcrab touchdown. The extra point was good and once again, to the dismay ofthe hometowners, it was knotted at 7-7. Horace Walton, Shelby Caraway and Kyle Martin had good games offensively, while Kyle McClain, Wayne Stewart and Donald Thomp- son were cited on defense. Raiders Defeated 32-6 by Lamar The Stroman Raiders played a gallant first lf in Rosenburg Friday night but couldn't ng on as Lamar Mustangs galloped away h a 32-6 victory. After leading 6-3 at halftime Stroman ame a victim of their own mistakes in the val two quarters. The Raiders allowed the stangs only 71 total yards - all rushing in the first half but came unglued in the ond half. The Mustangs roared back and took antage of Raider fumbles to seal the vic- bright spot was the running of David nson and David Garcia's booming punts. o, Eddie Miller played an excellent game ing speedy Robert Walker with a 40-yard b in the first half. Bucs Rip Raiders The Brazoswood Buccaneers came out throw- ing Friday night and racked up 4 touchdowns via the air route on the way to a 42-O triumph over the Raiders. The Raider offense didn't manage much yard- age against the powerful Buc defense. The Raid- ers did manage one touchdown on a 64-yard scoring strike from quarterback Eddie Miller to Kyle McClain. However, the six points were called back due to an offsides. Otherwise the Raider ground game couldn't get much going. The middle part of the Raider defense didn't play bad, but the four long passes really defeated Raider hopes. Brazoswood displayed a good passing game, but at times the Buc receiv- ers were wide open and it didn't take very good passes to hit them. Over all it was a convincing victory by a good team over the Raiders. Raider Comeback Skins Blackcats With David Johnson rushing for 231 yards, the Stroman Raiders rallied to claw the Bay City Blackcats 21-14 in a Dis- trict 25-AAAA football game. Johnson's performance enabled him to crack the 1,000 barrier and become the all-time single season rusher in Victo- ria public schools. Stroman raised their season record to 1-2-2 in District play and 3-3-3 for the year with the pressurized victory. Bay City took an early 14-O lead, but the Raiders fought gallontly back as they went 65 yards in 12 plays for a touchdown after the second Bay City touchdown. Kyle McClain then picked off a pass and returned it to the 1 yard line where Horace Walton cracked over for six. David Johnson smacked in from three yards out for the winning TD after David Meek and John Green pounced on a 'Cat fumble. 133 Varsity Boys Left-Right: David Meek, John Thomas, Mark Meek, Arthur Wells, Ronnie Kubenka, Charlie Thomas, Nate Johnson, Gene Moore, Howard Terrell, Ric Mimms, Robert Walker. The Raider basketball team had its first winning season since 1970-1971 and culminated the year by beating rival Vi ria High 39-38 for the first time ever, helping Stroman to continue its dominance in athletics over the Stingarees for year 1974-1975. The Raiders overall record was 18-15, while they went 5-7 in district play. The Raiders opened district play by smash the Calhoun Sandcrabs 73-42. The next victory was over the Bay City Black Cats, as they were bopped 75-51. Ot victories were a 61-52 win over Calhoun, a 65-56 win over the Lamar Consolidated Mustangs, and the great victory Victoria High. Seniors on this year's squad include: Nathaniel Johnson, Ricky Mimms, Howard Terrell, Arthur Wells, and David M Returning next year will be Mark Meek, Charlie Thomas, Ronnie Kubenka, John Thomas, Gene Moore, and Robert Wal Raider S u P e I' QEX Howard X Terre 11 ffl K David 1 88 ff 1 R'ky E S T a r s Super c n f c s t C 1 fix ' Q' xx H X x Charlie X John Thomas R Q i d e r ZR 4,11 'wh SK, . Before 1,000 screaming fans John Thomas sank a twenty foot iumpshot with two sec- onds left on the scoreboard and the Stroman Raiders had their first vic- tory in fifteen games over the rival Victoria High Stingarees by the score of 39-38. The last second shot touched nothing but net and was a climactic way to finish what had been a tense, exciting game. Just a little over three months ago on the cool autumn night of Novem- ber 15, the great Raider football team knocked the Stings all over the field for a one-point, 7-6, fist in that sport. Now, February 25, 1975 will go down in Raider history as the great basketball victory. No more can the Stings gloat over the fact that we have never beaten them in these two maior sports and we couldn't have done it in a better way than the way we defeated them. Special credit should go to Coach Dwayne Wilkinson who waited a long time for this special victory and who stuck by the Raiders through the good and bad years and now has the Raider basketball program on an excellent level with a bright future ahead. Now to tell about the momentous game. The game was close all the way, but was not a see-saw affair with the lead changing hands only six times the entire contest. The Stingarees led 11-9 at the end of the first quar- ter and 24-21 at halftime. Never during the entire game were the Raiders unsure of themselves and it was during the third quarter that the Raider squad made their move. A three point play by Howard Terrell evened the score at 24-24 with 6 minutes remaining in the quarter. Victoria High scored two buckets and a free throw with the Raiders scoring at the same pace. Then the Raiders hit three straight free throws and John Thomas hit his first buzzer shot for a four point, 33-29, third quarter lead. The stage was now set for the amazing fourth quarter. Stroman stayed in front for all of the quarter until the last hectic seconds. With twelve seconds left, a Stingaree stole the ball, drove the length of the court, and made the basket for a 38-37 Sting lead. The Stingaree fans now thought they had the game wrapped up, but it's too bad for them because the Raider team ref- used to quit. They quickly brought the ball downcourt and John Thomas made his historic shot to end the game. Then the scene turned to total bedlam as the Stingaree fans gaped in total disbelief and aston- ishment. How sweet it is! Coach Thiele and Coach Balzur quickly had Coach Wilkinson on their shoulders as he raised his fists in ci triumphant victory salute. Other willing shoul- ders hoisted Howard Terrell and Gene Moore up and soon the net came down off the goal, but that didn't end the celebrating - it had only begun. Just about everybo got thrown into the showers a thanks to the Anchor Club girls a the cheerleaders, there were t beautiful cakes to help with the cel brating. lf you weren't eating cak getting thrown into the shower, getting the breath beat out of y by some iubilant teammate, y were dancing to the music on t record player that had, by no found its way into the dressi room. What a night! The leading scorers for the ga were Howard Terrell with 17 points and sophomore Ron Kubenka with 13. Howard not o scored a lot of points, but made big plays for the Raiders as he been doing all year. Charlie Tho turned in a superb floor game as John Thomas. Nate Johnson di good iob coming in for starter M Meek who drew too many fouls. other players who made up the te who first beat the Stings are G Moore, Robert Walker, Ri Mimms, Arthur Wells, and Da Meek. The future looks very bri for the team next year as 4 ou the five starters return! lf the Rai set their minds to it, the Dist Championship can be theirs n year. As I walked through the e gym on that memorable night, l an immense surge of pride in kn ing that it was the Year of Raider!! ,4. i Q 0 1 T T Q A 9 - e s L-1 I 0 fa Y. They were partici- pants in Texas Boys' State held on the University of Texas campus and Blue- bonnet Girls' State held at Texas Lutheran College. Kyle McClain and David Meek were sponsored by the Lions and Kiwanis clubs. Cindy Haas, Eileen Kilgore and Carolyn Machalec were sponsored by the Pilot, Soroptom- ist and Luncheon Pilot clubs of Victoria. They were among 900 boys and 520 girls from across the state who took part in the week-long affairs. Learning about the various branches of govern- ment, campaigning for offices, and meeting state officials and personalities including Governor Dolph Briscoe, Chief Justice Price Daniels, and Coach Royal of T.U. were all memorable expe- riences. This did not present a problem, because no was experienced at publishing a newspaper or laying an annual. Perhaps this is what made it such a fun r. We didn't know enough about it to recognize our blems. There was a tremendous enthusiasm and a ire to help make this The Year ofthe Raider. Every- worked towards the goal of an off-set printed er Review lwith picturesl and an annual that covered complete year's activities. We are pleased with the lt. We learned a lot. We regret nothing.
