A ship needs many things to keep it going -- more than it can possibly keep on board, so, REPLENISHMENT. The easiest way to gain needed fuel, food, and parts is to pull up to a pier and load it on - unfortunately the piers are not in the middle of the sea, but giant floating supermarkets and gas stations are. They come in the form of Auxiliary ships known as oilers since most of the earlier ships of this type primarily carried oil. The story has changed, and now ships like the USS SEATTLE carry everything needed to keep a destroyer as well as an aircraft carrier loaded to the gills with fuel, food, parts, and special cakes for being IOOth and 200th ship alongside as STRIBLING was. During our voyage, STRIBLING took on millions of gallons of fuel with the majority of it coming from the SEATTLE. While two hoses are suspended in the air by span wires, STRIBLING can receive fuel at a rate of about 2,000 gallons per minute, and that's not all. While two fueling stations are busily receiving fuel, personnel at midships are receiving all sorts of goodies by means of a highline. This cable or wire rope holds up a moving trolley used to transport everything from food, parts, movies, and lube oil to that ever-precious cargo that keeps every sailor operating at peak efficiency - MAIL!!! To go alongside another ship requires special personnel are utilized to ensure that all operations are accomplished with expe- ditious caution. Specialists are also located in Main Control to keep the precise speeds needed while alongside. By far the most important part of the evolution is keeping the degree-perfect course needed to stay parallel to the replenishing ship. A special Helmsman takes degree by degree steering instructions from the conning officer as the Lee Helmsman takes the engine speed orders. STRIBLING has been complimented on her expertise during replenishments from oilers as well as helicopters. On two occasions, this expertise paid off in emergency situations where lives could have been lost - no one suffered even a scratch.
