There's Volleyball, Softball, Cross Country, Swimming, what used to be minor sports are becoming increas- ingly popular. And the girls have proved that they're just as tough as the guys. SHS, as well as the rest of the country, is back to the days when sports were the big thing in every school. School spirit is back and it's here to stay. The Bulldogs are back too. Streator's churning out winning teams for the First time in years and ya know, it's more fun to win than to be good losers! Sports bring people together. It doesn't matter if you're a quarterback, a for- ward, a pole vaulter, a second baseman, or just a fan, everybody's a part of it at SHS. 6 Score!!! ,,..,-wwf:-'-' f'-Y' ff A I A V I V. ,mr we ., I l ,,,.?i'xe I f .. 5. Ac- tually they only stand for one thing, Streator High School, lt's not a very ex- citing name for the place where we spend four lor morel years of our lives, But, what's in a name? After a few classes at SHS those same initials start turning up. Take a look at the athletes, your folders, road signs, bumper stickers, and even the garbage cans all proudly bearing SHS. Somehow it draws us all together and makes us belong. No matter how much we deny it we all want to belong, and at SHS we do. It seems like a pretty big place when youfre still a 4' 10 tall freshman, but there's still a place for everyone if you look around. We may not have a lot of fancy buildings with stained glass windows in the libraries or a landscaped campus like some schools, but we've got some- thin' a whole lot better. We've got great kids and a lot of school spirit. We've got a reputation for being a rough school in a rough town, but we're just playing it cool. SHS has class, and we're in a class all our own. Our school has something to offer everybody. Classes go from German and Rhetoric to Auto Mechanics and Welding. The clubs keep things rollin' at SHS too. Everyday someone new is selling candy or having a bake sale or begging kids to buy their key chains so they can make money. It puts adventure into coming to school. You never know what you'lI be asked to buy next. There are a lot of teachers that stand out at SHS too. Like Miss Driscoll. Every Senior knows and dreads her Rhetoric class. Or Mr. Vandemark who sells the tickets for the games. Everybody knows the coaches and P.E. teachers and lVlr. Mogill. But then Everybody stands out at SHS. We're a bunch of kids havin' a good time partying and talkin' with everybody. SHS has class. 15 MN 'J 0 O0 965 see was 9 5 565 see POMP A D CIRCUMSTANCE X I,,,a1.jL V v UWHEN Y0 U K NOWf Q 1 1 M A i , l 4 EZLREOTUHE CAN BE X-il 'Y 2 V' .aa- nw f -.11 fw- 33 2 fn ,..1 i 4 .V Qg 'A ,frmff Z? i xf X Nxgf' 3113 W' ? This year we feel safe in saying IT WAS POSITIVE! After a less-than-adequate book last year, it was sort of a sink or swim proposition this year. The staff for Ulvle and Nly SHS was one of the best we've ever had the chance to work with and we think the results prove it. It seems that whenever anything goes h wrong t e editor and advisor get blamed for it which is O.K. It also seems that whenever things go right the edi- tor and advisor get most of the credit which is not O.K. If there is anything likable about this book it's because of the people who put it together, the layout people, the copywriters, and the photographers Also the students of SHS are responsible for this book. Remember, you're all the stars and without you it doesn't happen. Thanks for all your support. P 'MMI 7 Jia? Ya know, a lot of people seem to wonder, what good are cheerleaders? That's easy. How would you like to go to a QUIET football game? Can you imagine what a drag it would be to go to a basketball game and be able to hear yourself think? Cheerleaders aren't school spirit but show me a better example. And be- sides, from a guy's point of view it's kind of nice to be able to go to a game and look at a whole bunch of really cute girls in neat sweaters and skirts. Just think for a minute about how much work those girls have to do. How hard do you think it is to keep smil- ing even when your team is getting creamed by your arch rivals? I'll tell you. Real hard! So, next time you're at a football game, don't just take cheer- leaders for granted. They're working just as hard as those guys on the field . . . 145 30 Wins 4 Losses Junior Varsity Record 17 Wins 2 Losses The Golf team placad lst in the I.V.C. conference and lst in N.C.I.C. 146 Golf I 5-. If there is one thing we will all remember about high school it will probably be four dozen assorted pairs of legs in cute red skirts that you see at every football and basketball game in Streator. That's right. Streatorettes. What would a halftime be without them? We would all be guzzling cokes and eating stale popcorn if it weren't for them. Instead, our halftimes are filled with entertainment performed by some of the best looking girls at S.H.S. So the next time some out-of-towner asks, What's a Streatorette? don't answer him. But when the curtain went up Friday night, and with a little luck and a lot of prayer, we pulled together a show. And what a show! It had everything from ballet to hard rock and much to the surprise of the cast and crews, the audience even liked it. But when the Final curtain went down Saturday night, there was a lot of happy people, a few tears, and a whole bunch of relief. You Don't Have To Be A Star was the 25th annual Talent Show sponsored by Student Council. The show was directed by two seniors, Jeff Walker and Toni Scott, and starred a cast of hard working and extremely talented SHS students. But everyone agreed that all the hard work was worth it, because these are the kind of things we'll all remember. 1. Cathi Freeman in Boogie Nights. 2. Sue Brennan, Jenny Jordan, and Chris Benckendorf singing their own version of Moon Shadow. 3. Diane Curtis singing with Kathy Martin. 4. Jeff Walker and Liz Danko: My Wife. Would you keep her? 5. They are sponsored by their t'father club Kiwanis Inter- national. Key Club International was founded in 1926 in California. The Streator club was started 12 years ago by Mr. Dave Goerne. Nlr. Peters and Mr. Panno are the faculty sponsors. These active guys put on ties and meet every Wednesday morning at 7:30. They plan their service projects in between milk and donuts. Some of these are: helping at the bloodmobile, ushering at sports events and Kiwanis travelogues, collecting canned goods for the Salva- tion Army, building a spook-house at the Y , and perhaps most important the time spent with their little buddies tChristmas shopping, picnics, building model planes, and just messing aroundl. In their most recent com- petition on the District level they won first place in Scrapbook and second place in single service projects. Their scrapbook placed second on the inter- national level. The Club also gets to- gether just to have a good time. Every year they have a picnic and a hayride together with the Z Club girls. It is sponsored by the Zonta Club, a professional women's organization. Members perform services for the school and the community like help- ing at the Rock and Roll Jamboree held at Heritage Manor, throwing a city-wide Halloween party at the Y , playing guides at Senior Bowl, and relining the trophy cases in the lobby. But at least it keeps life interesting. Swimming with 25 kids, who are trying their best to drown you or plant- ing tulip bulbs in pouring rain can hardly be called dull. Mem- bers don't believe in all work though. Every year they go on a picnic and a hayrack ride with Key Clubbers thrown in lto make it more interestingi. But, even though you spend half the time working on projects wishing you were somewhere else. Like when you're tired and you have to keep screaming kids from destroying each other, or when you still have 200 balloons to blow up and it's 11:00 at night, or you're ringing bells in the freezing weather and no one shows up to take over. In the end, you're glad. Because you put somebody else first for once and it feels good. Right to left. It requires much more than just writing sto- ries. It involves conning businessmen into buying advertising, spending lunch hours waiting to interview administrators, begging students to buy copies of the paper, trading favors for inside information, and playing jigsaw puzzle with columns of copy. There's always some last minute disaster to prevent the paper from being published. Like when the chemicals in the machine eat the headlines, or the photographer forgets to take off his lens cap and you end up with a headache and an ulcer and a role of blank film. Class members learn the newspaper industry ieven if it is on a small scalel. They learn how to get along with people and the difliculties of keeping a business out of the red. You never know what's gonna hap- pen next. It's a 2nd hour class. It's a good way to start off a school day. It's a-whole-lotta-fun. 176 Row 1. Nancy Flecker, Cathie Durdan, Mary Jo O'Kraski. Row 2. Nor do not saw the air too much with your hands, thus, but use all gently: for in the very torrent, tempest, and, as I may say, whirlwind of your passion, you must acquire and beget a temperance that may give it smoothness. All the worId's a stage, and all the men and women merely play- ers, they have their exits and their entrances, and one man in his time plays many parts, his acts being seven ages. First, the infant, mewling and puking in the nurses arms. Then the whin- ing schoolboy, with satchel and shining morning face, creeping like snail, unwillingly to school. And then the lover, sighing like a furnace, with a woeful ballad made to his mistress' eyebrow. Then a soldier, full of strange oaths, bearded like the pard, jeal- ous in honor, sudden and quick in quarrel, seeking the bubble reputation even in the cannon's mouth. And then the justice, in fair round belly with good capon lined, with eyes severe and beard of formal cut, full of wise saws and modern instances, and so he plays his part. The sixth stage shifts into the lean and slippered pantaloon, with spectacles on nose and pouch on side, his youthful hose, well-saved, a world too wide for his shrunk shank, and his big manly voice, turning again to childish treble, pipes and whistles in his sound. Last scene of all, that ends this strange eventful history, is second childishness and mere obliv- ion, sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything. Wil. Shakespearel As You Like It, Act II, Scene VII Behind the Scenes . . . oo 001 - coin :I ,ig It works???? Mr. Luther: And I get stuck with a bunch of idiots who read stage directions out loud.
