THE REVIEW The iournalism class of Streat- or High School puts out a bi- weekly paper, the REVIEW. The students prepare the paper tor publication themselves, and it contains sports events, club news, proiects, student honors, dances, items about teachers, and gos- sip. Each student, by requirement, is an editor of the paper at least once. The newspaper serves not only the school andthe communi- ty, but also is an outlet for those interested in iournalism. Ja? The club meets every Mon- day after school to prac- tice stunts and to prepare for their annual water show, which they pro- duce in the spring. This year all the music which the girls swam to was written by Rodgers and Hammerstein. Selections from such musicals as South Pacific, The King and l, and Carousel were used. The girls take great pride in their show and have fun swimming together. Miss Goll and Miss Schouten shared the sponsorship of the club. How- ever, the Bulldogs were hampered by lack of experience and depth. They finished the campaign with a 3-4-l record. Some of the highlights of the campaign included the trouncing of a fine Sterling team, 39-13, for a sparkling Homecoming victory. Another highlight was the defeating of Dixon, 7-O, in a defensive struggle. The other victory of the Bulldogs came at the hands of a poor Hall team by the score of 19-O. The Bulldogs opened the season by falling to Ottawa Marquette by the score of 13-7. Their next loss came at the hands of their old rival, Ottawa, when the Bulldogs were out-manned and defeated by the score of T9-O. The Bulldogs were shut out again as they were stunned by De- Kalb, l4-O. The Bulldogs' final loss came at the hands of St. Bede. In this game, the Bulldogs dominated the first three and one-half quarters before falling 7-6. The other Bulldog game was a deadlock with Kewanee, 7-7. One factor which nobody could control was the weather. Every game was played in the rain with the exception of one, and that was played in freezing temperatures. The club had nine seniors in the starting lineup, and they will all be missed for the coming season. However, the Juniors should be quite successful next year. J. Ramza, M. Wargo. 1 A 5 ,.-4 ?' CROSS COUNTRY Coach Patrick's Harriers compiled an impressive dual meet record of five wins and two losses, one of the losses to Ottawa, which later qualified for the state finals by placing second in the district meet, which was held at the local country club. As far as conference meets and individual meets are considered, the team experienced a disappointing season. Coach Patrick is losing five varsity letter winners, three of whom were among the first five runners. Next year's outlook is a poor one with only two varsity letter winners and three sophomore letter winners returning. The sophomores had an unimpressive record of six losses. They lacked the depth which is needed to make 'a winning team. Coach Patrick congratulates Co-Captain D. FRESHMAN BASKETBALL The Freshman basketball team ended its reg- ular season play with a very fine record of thir- teen wins and only one loss. One of these wins was through a forfeiture by Spring Valley. The only loss was to Ottawa, a team that they had previously beaten, and this was iust one of those days that the boys could not hit. With exactly half the season gone, Coach Pat- rick resigned. He was replaced by Coach Stephens, who did a very fine iob the rest of the season. The deficit in the win column does not mean that all was a loss for Coach Bob Jones in his first year at Streator. With only four varsity letter winners graduating, Coach Jones feels that next year's team will be a strong one with a good num- ber of underclassmen returning, all of these having at least one or two years of experience behind them. During the course of the season three school and pool records were shattered. Two of these records were con- tributed by Captain Greg Gwin. In the IOO-yard Back- stroke event he set the record at l:IO.9, and in the T60- yard Individual Medley he brought the new record to l:55.l. The third record was set by the I6O-yard Medley Relay team, composed of J. Devera, R. Pfalzgraf, D. Noon, and B. Ryan. They lowered the record to I:32.8. Pictured at the right are Coach Jones, along with Cap- tain Greg Gwin, the lone Bulldog swimmer who qualified for the State finals. They finished with a record of three victories in dual meets, won one triangular while losing one triangular, scored seven points in the DeKalb Relays, placed third in the District Meet at Ottawa, placed third in the l. V. Meet, and placed sixth in the NCIC. Three individuals and the 880 Relay Team qualified for the State Meet at Champaign. John Haar qualified in the High Hurdles and in the Low Hurdles, setting a district and school record of :2O.9 in the Low Hurdles. Frank Wargo won the 220 yard dash at district, and Ray Stinar placed in the High Jump event. Also qualifying for the State Meet was the Half-Mile Relay Team, consist- ing of John Sabol, Ron Jones, Jerry Westwood, and Frank Wargo. All were eliminated during the qualifying tryouts at State. During the District Meet Streator missed the services of Jim Telford, consistent scorer in the Broad Jump and the 220-yard dash. With TeIford's services, Streator could have very well won the District Meet, which would have been the third consecutive year. The Frosh-Soph team won one dual meet over Pontiac and placed last in a triangular with L.P. and Ottawa. They placed third in the Illinois Valley Meet, with Dick Paton winning the 440-yard dash, Bob Ryan winning the 880-yard run, and Don Cinnamon winning the Low Hurdle event. FIRST ROW: H. Hart, J. BASEBALL Forty-five boys answered the call for baseball this spring, but, due to lack of proper facilities, only 21 boys were still playing at the end of the season. This year's team played a total of nine games, winning five and dropping four. Don Moore, Dick Zion, Jim Klever, and Steve Creamean led the Bulldogs with their effective hitting, and Dick Zion and Loney Augustine pitched the Bull- dogs to a better-than-average season. Since Coach Stephens will lose only four boys, he should have a fine team next year.
