Throughout the year these entertainments were presented for the student's enjoyment. Some were of a serious, educational nature, while others included music and lighter entertainment. Many of the events were student products, most ot these being pep rallies. All of them were enjoy- able and well received. Mr. D. S. Williams P. Batkiewicz H. The prep band consisted of eleven members who have had little or no musical training. Through much effort and practice, each of these eleven members hopes to become advanced enough to become a member of the A band. This year, instead of a dance band, a studio band was formed under the direction of Mr. Rouillard. This group had a larger instrumen- tation and consisted of twenty-nine members. First Row: R. ROUILLARD Director A BAN D The Streator lligh School Band, under the direction of John C. Rouillurd. participated in many worthwhile activities during the 1955-56 school year. Early in October the ninety piece band visited Northwestern University and marched with fifty-two other bands at the First Annual High School Band Day. A good marching band is a boost to any high school cheering section as was proved at Strea- tor's football games. The high - stepping drummers. rhythmically kept pace with Streat0r's touchdownsg the brass section. loud and bold. urged the Bulldogs on to victory. and the band played the familiar strains of the Loyalty ahoye the victorious cries ot' the Bulldog fans. ll+l ' ILL si 6 1 5, g Va . 2 il Q , ER, . 5 f lfourth Row: J. Snlz An asset to any band's achievements is to have enjoyable concerts, and Streator's band has given its audience something to be proud of. The first concert was presented to the student body a week before Christmas. This added to the growing excitement and senti- ment felt by all students in providing holi- day music of varied interests. The winter concert, February 12, showed music admirers of the area what an industrious band they are. A variety or' music was presented. mostly in the lighter category. At the spring concert, May 11, more classical variety was performed than in previous engagements. A springtime mood was created when the curtains opened, to a band dressed in suits, and a chorus in lovely pastel formals. A highlight of the concert was the presentation of the John Phillip Sousa Band Award to the outstanding graduating band member. 15 Ambition, determination, and plenty of hard work compensated those students who entered the district contest for solos and ensembles which was held in Earlville, March 24. Seventeen soloists and seven en- sembles represented the Streator band. Of these, eleven soloists and four ensembles won firsts or superior ratings, and journeyed to the state contest held in Peoria, May 4. Four soloists and two ensembles received seconds or excellent ratings. Two soloists and one ensemble returned with thirds or good ratings. Another big event was the state band contest at which the Streator band, compet- ing against top-notch bands from all over Illinois, received a very fine rating. It was held in Peoria, May 5. All of these activities, together with many others. brought about a feeling of having had a very successful year. It is with great expectation that this group looks forward to years ahead with the S. H. S. Band. l First Row: G. Ladkow, P. Strong, R. Robertson, S. Jackson, M. Teach. P. Case, D. Liptak, B. Boyd. S. Rees, A. Adamson, pianist, D. Armstrong, D. Bakalar, J. Daniels, M. Watts. M. Chosen as the best class float was that of the Senior Class with the Davy Crockett theme. The Latin Club was honored for the best club float. The choice of prize floats was difficult because of the hard work and originality displayed in all floats. Following the parade at 8:00 p.m., the Homecoming football game was played against St. Bede. Loyalty and full support of the student body afforded Streator's Bull- dogs a 20-6 victory. During ceremonies at the game, Cherie Williams, Junior candidate, was crowned queen of the 1955 Homecom- ing. On Saturday, October 1, the Homecom- ing concluded with the annual dance at the Streator Armory. All Homecoming ar- rangements were under the supervision of the Student Council. Their efforts were justly rewarded because of the success of the 1955 Homecoming. Events such as sports victories in tournaments, speech contest prizes, or triumphs in a music con- test which help build the good reputation of Streator High are special. The people winning these victories are to be congratulated for their fine work. vm First Kuw: C. Thomas, P. Sennott, Nl. Nlc'Menz-xmin. R. Rush. M. Gotrh, S. Hlnluk. A. Ross. E, l'owers. M. The engineers, announcers, reporters. copywriters, and the sales staff all worked together to produce their show and to be one of the most active clubs at S. H. S. The club rebroadcasts many of the out- of-town Bulldog basketball games, often traveling a great distance in order to bring them to the people of Streator. WIZZ Jr. also sponsored the twirp season dance in conjunction with the Student Council. An assembly was presented before the student body commemorating their third anniversary. The club also sponsored a pep rally skit. which was taken from the popular Herb Shriner TV show, prior to one of the Bulldogs' home basketball games. A trip to television and radio stations in Chicago was planned last spring by the entire club. This gives the members an opportunity to learn more about the work of professional people in the field of radio and television. NVho knows but what in ten years or so when we turn on the radio or TV set, we may see one of our old classmates who was an en- thusiastic member of WIZZ Jr. X-N., J. Boyd J. This group is under the direction of George Ashworth, athletic director, and head football coach. Included on the roster of the various sports activities offered at Streator High are: Gaston Freeman, mentor of basketball and baseball, Max Patrick, cross-country, Freshman basketball and assistant coach, Don Lewis, coach of swimming, tennis, and Freshman footballg Francis Mclnerney, coach of Frosh-Soph GEORGE ASHWORTH Athletic Director Wil Lundberg Patrick F1 eeman football and basketball, and assistant in baseball, Ralph Ganzer, golf, wrestling, and assistant football coachg and Swede Lundberg, coach of track, and assistant in football. These men, who we can be justly proud of, contribute much toward the build- ing of strong men while in command of the crimson and white. They give much effort and time to help train and encourage these boys in the teaching of a particular sport, so that they may excel in it and merit the satisfaction of victory not only for them- selves, but for the entire school citizenry. and x... l I First Rnw: VVayne Chamberlain. In the next game Streator lost a heart-breaker to Ottawa, 6-0. It was a game in which Streator showed that it had plenty of heart as evidenced in their defense. Streator's first home game of the season was Homecoming, and the Bulldogs rose to the occasion by trouncing St. Bede, 20-6. Marquette handed Streator its second loss of the season, 7-6, in a game which could have gone either way up to the final gun. A very strong Peoria Central team caught Streator off guard and trounced them. 28-0. Seeking retribution, Streator returned to Big 12 action and promptly won over Pekin by a 20-7. score. Soon after, the Bulldogs toppled Danville, 31-6. The next week they surprised the home folks by up- setting Peoria Manual, 20-6. In the final game against Champaign, the remarkable maroon team walloped us :lil-12. The Bulldogs finished the year with a 5-4 record. which showed greater im- provement over last year. The prospects for the ensuing season are very encourag- ing. Coach Max Patrick's squad brought their season to a successful close by winning first place in the district meet at Ottawa, where Terry McCoy placed second. The Bulldogs finished twentieth at the state meet in Champaign, where Terry McCoy again placed first, ranking eighty-fourth in a field of one hundred sixty-six of the state's best runners. The Bulldogs had only a fair season's record. winning two of seven dual meets. They finished third in the Ottawa Invitational, third in the Illinois Valley meet, and sixth in the Big Twelve meet. In this, Coach Patrick's record year at Strea- tor, his boys accomplished the dream of all high school boys, reaching the state finals in an ath- letic contest. This year's major letter winners were: Jim Hool, Mike Keating, Terry McCoy, Ron Brandt, Ken XVilliams, Don Ryan, Paul McDonald, and Manager, Jerry Barnwell. The team has good prospects for an outstand- ing squad next year, as the returning lettermen will be bolstered by a fine Frosh-Soph squad. llrst R-m: M. l-xe-:nln1,:. IP. Ryan, l. Nlvllorialnl, l. The squad showed great improvement over last season, winning six of their eleven dual meets and finishing sixth in the Big Twelve meet. Coach Don Lewis will lose four lettermen from this year's team through graduation. They are: Reggie Bean, Jerry Ingalsbee, Terry McCoy, and Bill Reese. Although the boys who graduated were very important to the team, there is much hope for another good season next year. Every year since the recent organization of the swimming team, its record has shown improvement, so we are hopeful that next year's team will stay on the right track. Thiid nw 'i ' ', T. They won six of their twelve dual meets and finished sixth in the Big Twelve meet held in our high school gym. Four Bulldogs placed at this meet: Dick Boales, second placeg John Cain, third placeg Joe Lamagno, third placeg and Tom Wonders, fourth place. Dick Boales also took second place in the sectional wrestling tournament, which qualified him for the state meet where he was defeated in his first match. The outlook for next year is very bright with the wrestling squad losing only three graduating lettermen: John Cain, Merlin Callahan, and Jack Richards. Coach Ralph Ganzer did an excellent job of molding to- gether a fine team this year after being hard hit by graduation in '55. Second Row: K. Zimmvr, B, Mei, B. Howell, H. Clark, D. Nehluck. H. Among this group were four veteran letter- men: Dan Hyduk, Jim Hanley, Dick Ham- ann, and Ted Drapp. The tennis team looked forward to a better season than the 1955 squad who won five out of ten meets. The schedule this year called for thirteen dual meets. This was Coach Lewis' second year at Streator High, and he is looking hopefully toward a very bright future in tennis. He was most enthusiastic about the increase in number of candidates for the team. Top Row: GOLF The golf season got under way as twenty- three boys reported for practice. Included in this group were three returning letter- men: Jim Mazak, Scott Patterson, and Dick Missel. Coach Ganzer also had a number of underclassmen who were very promising prospects. The best of this group were: Kamell Abdnour, Bob Wilson, Jerry Missell. and Alan Wheatland. This year's golf squad was a team of the future, because of their youth. Though it was a young inexperienced squad, they were capable of having one of the most suc- cessful seasons of any other golf team in re- cent years. Left to right: Coach Ganzor. C. Giacinto. A. Thirty-seven of these boys made the team, which was largely composed of underclassmen. Streator's hopes were based mainly upon these re- turning lettermen: John Cain, John Cottingham, Dave Kaschak, Dan Kerestes, Bill Novotney, Tony Cravatta, and Al Johnston. Newcomers to this year's squad in- cluded: Freshmen, Keith Brownsey, Dave Detrick, Dave Elias, George Elko, Bob Eden, Kirk Freese, Ralph Ham- ann, Jack Krocker, Charles Klever, Jerry Kreitner, Dan McGuire, Al McDowell, Gene Matsko, Lester Mance, Jack Maniglia, and Tom Vagaskyg Sophomores, Ben Haggardg Juniors, Carl Barton and Charles Shaibley. The Bulldog's baseball schedule this year slated fifteen games aside from the district tournament. In- cluded in the fifteen were four big double-headers with Big Twelve teams. This was a year of rebuilding, since losses were so heavy due to the 1955 graduation, which took so many stars. As a result of underclassmen filling key positions on the team, it did not reach its peak performances until late in the season. The future looks very bright for these promising underclassmen and the team. Coach Gaston Freeman has the beginning of another traditionally good baseball team. There were ten return- ing lettermen included in this group: Merlin Callahan, Bob Johnson, Terry McCoy, Jack Richards, Wayne Chamberlain, Gene Christmann, Ron Goerne, Paul Moye, Ken Williams, and Joe Lamagno. This year's schedule was very rugged, offering few, if any, weak spots. But it has been one of the best seasons in a long time for the Bulldog's track team. Many of the boys were just coming into their own at the end of last season. This year they represented Streator in a very fine style. Coach Lundberg was assisted by Coach Max Patrick. Together they coached an outstanding squad of boys. The future of the track team is exceptionally bright. Many of the boys will be back again next year, and there was also a very promising group of underclassmen on the squad. A few of the boys on the team also have high hopes this year of reaching the state meet, and we feel that they have a good chance of making it. f90l SCHEDULE April 4 Odell tFrosh-Sophl .......... Gef- At the beginning of the year sub- scriptions were taken individually. Each student was responsible for soliciting sub- scribers and collecting subscriptions at 31.50 a year. Collecting advertisements pre- pared by merchants of the city was another job for the students which gave them ex- perience in meeting the public. Every member of the journalism classes had the opportunity of being editor of the paper. He thus learned the responsibility of meeting a deadline which is a must. At the end of the year everyone makes a Review as an individual project which is required to pass the course. Aside from writing, copyreading, and editing the newspaper, the many phases of journalism are studied such as. the history of the newspaper and learning to judge propaganda. This helped the students to understand the many steps and techniques in the newspaper world. After one year of hard work, tand funj Miss Moynihairs students were well aware of the fact that good judgment. writing ability. and intelligence are essentials to a good journalist. They not only know that they are essential. however. they have also acquired them. In-ft tu right: t'. Urban, 'l'. luel. Bl. Km-ating. if Xilnriu-1'i1i:ui. N. lluv. U. Hurx R.
