'ii School History Our high school training is a great force in preparing us for our later life. In this capacity the Streator Township High School has had a great deal to do with the destinies of our city, state, and nation, since it has been this institution which has trained the minds of many of the young men and women who have helped to govern our nation. In consideration, therefore, of the constant change which is taking place in our civiliza- tion, it has been necessary at various times to make additions to and changes in our school, both in the building itself and to the curricula. The first class of the Streator Township High School was organized in 1875 Because of the lack of an appropr1ate building the classes were conducted at xarlous places first in the Carfield School then on the second floor of the building now occupied by the Times Press and then in the old Methodist Church located where the Baptist parsonage stands today The first graduation exercises in the spring of 1876 were held in the Oriental Hall When the success of the school seemed secure Colonel Ralph Plumb donated a square block of land on North Bloomington Street and erected the first permanent building This building large enough to accommodate four hundred students was dedicated in 1882 In a little over a decade the number of pupils had increased to such a degree that it was necessary to add more rooms to the o11g1nal structure Therefore in 1902 a south west wing was constructed and a xariets of new subjects was introduced to the students A few xears time however proved that even the new addition was insuflicient to accommodate the student bodv which was lapidly increasing in number each vear Thus in 1917 the large house on the corner of Bloomington Street and Lincoln Avenue was leased and the rooms convei ted into classiooms This house was known as the Annex k,..ff' ,ff Original Building of CD Streator Township Hugh School A f.i.fiwafXdNA,5 'B H' Built 1882 'K' ' Razed1923 gmzi 5' in sf-iff!
