THE HIGH SCHOOL REVIEW The Commercial arl' of Our Hugh School HY IS lt that most Hlgh Schools tram the pupnls of thelr commercial course ln only a few branches of commerce? Ours has been fmely developed under Mr Scott one of our best teachers, ln typewrltmg, under Mlss Elsle Scott In Commercial Law and Commerclal English under Mr Anspaugh and Mlss Hartford respectlvely, all very good ln then llnes But d1d you ever stop to thmk IS thxs enough? The courses offered here prepare a pexson for only 1.121 of the posltlons now open ln the com merclal world and those only of the non productlve type The prmclpal of a Boston Hlgh School has sald lt IS time that the commerclal schools of thls country begm to prepare thelr puplls for the other 85W of the places What posltlons are lncluded under the other 857 Those pOSItlOnS are known as the productlve posltlons whxch sell the goods the alm of every business For lf goods are not sold there IS no buslness, they are clerks and salesmen, correspondents and advertlslng men No busxness, however small can get along wxthout the help of at least a few clerks These should at least understand somethlng about the prm of hlrmg a bookkeeper who had not learned at least the fundamentals of bookkeepmgl Then why do they hlre clerks who know nothlng about the art of selling, put them behlnd thexr counters, and expect them to make good? Because there lS no better place where young people can fit them selves to become efflclent clerks than behlnd the counter Now, may I ask would xt not be of great help to the merchants of thls our clty lf some of the pupils of th1s Hlgh School could be tramed ln the rlght way of selllngq Are not more customers turned away from a store by the actlons of untralned clerks than for any other reason? If this Hlgh School had a class In salesmanshlp ln whlch the puplls were taught how to approach a customer ln a pleasmg manner how to present an artlcle IH the rlght way so that the prospectlve buyer wlll not want to be wlthout lt how to antlclpate the needs of a regular customer by rememberlng hls or her preuous purchases or by suggestxon of new artlcles at the rlgh time would xt not soon pay for itself 1n the Improved SCFVICE ln the stores of Streatorl The clerk IS the dlrect representatlve of the manager and through hum or her the profits whlch the store depends on must come A customer IS worth from fifty to one hundred dollars IH profits to a store IH a year, so IS It not worth whlle to glue some thought to thls end of the busmess as no amount of flgurmg ln the cost department w1ll equal the loss that IS caused lf mefficlent clerks are employed ln the selling end Now take up the second posltlon known as the correspondent The correspondent IS the letter wrlter of the house Through hlm orders are recelved frlends made, complamts adjusted, and almost any thlng whlch may come up ln modern business whlch can be attended to by mall IS done Thlnklng of the broad scope of the correspondent s work, one can readlly see that only a tramed man or woman con expect to fill thls 53 Il! . . . ,I . cipals of salesmanship before entering their place.
