YORK CITY-0UR T0 The sun peers through the towering buildings. In the glimmering light a milkman's horse and wagon clatter down the avenue. New York begins to stir. Workers slowly disappear into the subway. In the distance the siren of a fire engine and the screeching of brakes proclaim that New York has come to life. With that ever familiar cry, MHold that doorlw school girls and boys busily elbow their way into the already crowded trains. House- wives are rushing breakfast so they can start their early morning shop- ping. Children are running to the parks to play. Typewriters clickg tele- phones ring-New York begins to work. New York is called the city of laughter and fun, but the little things that don't seem to count make this New York of ours a city with a heart. As the day passes the grating of brakes may mean a child is hurtg the clang of the fire engine--a home is lost. The rustle of white satin going down the aisle of a church is the beginning of a new life for two young people. Tears of happiness of a mother at the station welcome her boy home. The incessant gossip of a neighbor conceals a kind heart. This is the real New York. At the end of the day, people once more rush into the subways. Now they are heading home-to a quiet evening with their loved ones. Others crowd the 6GGreat White Way, living in a world of fantasy, if only for a few hours. Then, slowly, all is quiet again. New York goes to sleep. EDITH MALCOLM 7
